We are inviting all horse clubs and horse riders around southern Indiana to attend this event. 4 Adventure, courage, endurance, dirt, sweat, cold water and forest fire! Are you up for the adventure? Four ITRA Cowgirls recently enjoyed the adventure in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana. Irene Hagerman, Deb Maschmeyer, Linda Britt and Sara Anderson joined Rich Ranch Outfitters for an eight day pack trip. We rode over 120 miles and climbed 3500 feet to elevation of 8500 foot. We moved camp 4 times, drank and bathed in cold mountain streams, cut our way through trails of fallen timber, slept on the ground, ate wonderful food and experienced a once in a lifetime ride to the Chinese Wall. After four days on horseback, we rode another 3 ½ hours on horseback until it was too steep for the horses to go any further. We then climbed on foot 1500 feet up a rocky mountain that literally took our breath away with pounding heartbeat in that high altitude. We struggled and persevered to the top of the Chinese Wall. It was an adrenalin rush that was rewarded with a fabulous awesome view. Very few people ever have this opportunity- it was an awesome achievement. That night we experienced a lightning storm and rolling thunder like we had never heard before. The night 13 sky was filled with an orange glow from the smoke of the forest fires. We received radio communication to change our plans to leave over a different mountain pass because the planned trail was on fire. We rode horses up 3500 feet with 81 switchbacks to the fire station on top of Jumbo Mountain. The last section was too steep for horses so we climbed the last mile on foot. The young woman ranger stays on top of the mountain from June to October scouting and reporting forest fires. She was busy that day from the eight fires the night before. Rich Ranch Outfitters is outstanding. They provide good horses, a pack string of mules and wranglers to guide and prepare wonderful meals. They go above and beyond to deliver a great experience in the Montana Bob Marshall Wilderness. If you are up to the adventure of 6-8 hours a day on horseback, lots of climbing, narrow trails, the luxury of tent camping and cold water streams with beautiful mountain scenery, we highly recommend Rich Ranch Outfitters.

6 ITRA at Work 2015 Extreme Rider Race By Karen Humphreys At the ITRA Fall Ride there were numerous activities going on which pulled some of the audience away. But we still had several people cheering their favorite rider on through the course. This year we did the side pass; rotate 360 with front feet in little box; carry water and pour it into bucket; dismount and rescue an injured rabbit; carry rabbit over rocking bridge; pick up trash and put it in bucket; drag a sled of cans; open a mailbox; put jacket over neck and rump and then circle noisy animals. We had two lovely youth competing. Shelby Hemmer won the first place plaque with 94 points. Her horse was very well trained and very responsive to her. Micah Hardy had a very well trained horse also and earned 93 points for a close second place. We do have some great youth on very nice horses. Next year we need more youth participating so start practicing. In the adult division, we had two ladies who both earned 101 points out of 100 by doing the side pass both directions. The only difference was the time. Chris Beasley had the shortest time for first place plaque. Shirley Kerr came in second with a perfect score. She joked that her time was slower because she was riding a mule and they are slower. Scott Woods had his arm twisted to enter and earned third place. Katelynn Roberts was one point behind Scott for 4th place. Betsy Muskat was 5th and Dana Hardy came in sixth. It was another close competition and it shows how much we work with our horses. Keep up the great work. We will be having the competition again next year on Saturday before the pitch in, so plan to compete or watch the action. 7 I am contacting you to help spread the word about the Friends of Brown County State Park. This has been an active and supportive group for many years. This group has had a large influence on the park, acted as watchdogs of the park, and contributed to the park with many volunteer hours. Some of the accomplishments of the group include the building of the friends trail, the building of the Friends shelter near the Nature Center, buying a saw mill for the park (that we use to make hitch rails for the park with) the Morel fest and the Plant sale. Their mission is: We are dedicated to the conservation, education, preservation, research and interpretation of Brown County State Park. Why am I telling you this? Because the core members of the friends groups are reaching a point in life where they can no longer do what they once did so well. Like everything, time catches up with us all. The group does not want to disband but it is being pushed to its limit. A vote in January may have big consequences for the future of the group. Doug, Jim and I act as advisors of the group. Because we work for the park we cannot be voting members. We would hate to see this group go away. So I am making an effort to get the word out to as many folks as I can to: 1. Become a member of the friends. 2. Be active within that membership. The group meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Nature Center. They have a potluck dinner (food is amazing) at 6:30 p.m. the meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. It is a worthwhile cause but needs many able and active members. In the four years I have been at this park I do not recall seeing anyone from the equine lifestyle at one of the Friends meetings. I think it s time. Could you please pass this along to any and all that may be interested in joining the Friends of Brown County State Park? Post this anywhere you like. More than likely it will be friends that live near the park but they do have members of the friends that live out of state so really there are no limits to who can join. Kevin Snyder Assistant Property Manager Brown County State Park Desk Cell Fax Brown County State Park By Kevin Snyder, assistant Property Manager 10 ITRA at Work Brown County Fall Clean-Up By Bob McPheeters Indiana Trail Riders Assoc. will host a trail clean up at Brown county State Park on Saturday, November 28, We will meet at the shelter house by the campground entrance at 9:00 a.m. to sign-in. It is very important everyone working on the trails to sign in so we will know what trails are being cleaned. We will also direct other riders and helpers on foot to needed work areas. Please stop by the shelter house when you are finished and log your total hours you worked. Some members also work on Friday so be sure to include those work hours. We share the number of volunteer hours with the park manager and Department of Natural Resources. At 6:00 p.m. we will have a pitch-in at the shelter house with ITRA providing the meet. Please bring something to sit on as we use most of the tables for food. Another famous ITRA pitch-in! An ITRA board meeting will take place after the pitch-in at 7:30 p.m. A WINTER BARN HINT If you have cats or dogs living in your barn, feed them in the morning only. Unwanted critters tend to come into the barn at night when no one is around. 7 Thanksgiving Time Again! By Pastor Dean What will you be giving thanks for? As we continue to prepare for our fall services at the park we have some dates that you might be interested in. October 17 we will have our first annual Apple fest. We will be handing out caramel apples that we hand dip over a fire from 2 to 4 pm. Then in November on the 8th Sunday after church we will have our Thanksgiving meal. Theme is 1800 as we will be cooking everything over a fire! If you would like to help with any of these events please contact me at the below addresses. In the Scriptures we find the word Thanksgiving in the following verses: Psalms 95:2 "Let us come before him with thanksgiving, let us sing songs of praise to Him for the Lord is a great God a great king above all gods." Our God Jehovah is the only God his name is above all other names! 1 Chronicles 16: 34 "give Thanksgiving to the Lord, for He is good and his love endures forever. Have you experienced this enduring love? Maybe through a difficult time in your life or just enjoying a trail ride and seeing the creation that God spoke into existence! Psalms 101:4 "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his court's with praise, give thanks unto him and praise his Holy Name!" We absolutely love being able to sing praises to Jesus in the park on Sunday morning and enjoy all of his creation that he created, and if you spill coffee in His sanctuary it's no big deal! Let's not forget to give thanks for: the men and women in uniform our police officers, fireman; our parents and grandparents; and those that are close to us. Tell somebody you're thankful for them this year and that you love them. Be blessed in Jesus name!
