The outlook wasn t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day; The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play. And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same, A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game. A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast; they thought, if only Casey could get but a whack at that they d put up even money, now, with Casey at the bat. But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake, and the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake, so, upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat, for there seemed but little chance of Casey s getting to the bat. But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all, and Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball; and when the dust had lifted, and the men saw what had occurred, there was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third. Then from five thousand throats and more, there rose a lusty yell; it rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell; it knocked upon the mountain and recoiled upon the flat, for Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat. There was ease in Casey s manner as he stepped into his place; there was pride in Casey s bearing and a smile on Casey s face. And when, responding to the cheers, he lightly doffed his hat, no stranger in the crowd could doubt twas Casey at the bat. Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt; five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt. Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into his hip, defiance gleamed in Casey s eye, a sneer curled Casey s lip. And now the leathercovered sphere came hurtling through the air, and Casey stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there. Close by the sturdy batsman the ball unheeded sped That ain t my style, said Casey. Strike one, the umpire said. From the benches, black with people, there went up a muffled roar, like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore. Kill him! Kill the umpire! shouted someone on the stand; and it s likely they d have killed him had not Casey raised his hand. With a smile of Christian charity great Casey s visage shone; he stilled the rising tumult; he bade the game go on; he signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew; but Casey still ignored it, and the umpire said: Strike two. Fraud! cried the maddened thousands, and Echo answered fraud; but one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed. They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain, and they knew that Casey wouldn t let that ball go by again. The sneer is gone from Casey s lip, his teeth are clenched in hate; he pounds with cruel violence his bat upon the plate. And now the pitcher holds the ball, and now he lets it go, and now the air is shattered by the force of Casey s blow. Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; the band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, and somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout; but there is no joy in Mudville mighty Casey has struck out. If a candidate or any member cannot attend a Saturday work party, feel free to come to the club any other time, and do something in the building. Kenny Shanley and Mike Murphy are always available to dole out some guidance. Monday, September 17 - The Shillelagh Invitational Golf Tournament The 2018 Shillelagh Invitational Golf Tournament is being hosted by the Ocean County FSOS Chapter, and they are excited to be hosting it for their 1st time. Tournament will be held at The Atlantis Golf Course, Tuckerton, NJ. Registration begins at 8am, with a morning tee-off time of 9am (shotgun start) The price is $125 per person which includes Golf, a lunch buffet and two (2) hours of beer and wine in the Cuisine on the Green, located on the course. Hope to see as many FSOS Brothers as possible at this event; it is a chance to have all the Clubs together. Contact Jeff Schuld to sign-up; he will coordinate with the Ocean County Chapter. Saturday, September 29 - Annual Family 1:00 to 6:00PM Our crew of BBQ guys and gals will once again tantalize your taste buds with a menu that is sure to please. Although the menu is not finalized, we are positive there will be more food than most of us could possibly ingest. As always, tap beer, wine and soda will be flowing. There will be live music, some children activities and a Raffle. As with all our outside functions, please bring chairs. For the 4th year in a row we will host the rib cook off; to register please contact Jeff Schuld. Can Ed Quigley defend his 2017 title? You need to be present to find out; so does Ed. $20 per person (21 and over); children 10 years old through years old: $10; children 9 years and under are free. This event is one of the club s gifts to our membership. Please come down to Chill with your friends, and Sizzle with the food. It s always heartwarming to see a LARGE MEMBER TURNOUT each year; remember it s your club. Hope to see you there!!! Many volunteers are needed before, during and after this event. Saturday, October 2PM - Kelly Brothers Scholarship Benefit The club will be hosting the annual Kelly Brothers Scholarship Benefit, in memory of brothers Bob & Dennis Kelly. A $25 donation includes food, draft beer, wine and soda; a DJ, and games for children, whom are free. If unable to attend, donations are greatly appreciated; checks can be made out to: Hemophilia Association of NJ, or H.A.N.J. 3 ESSEX CHAPTER Saturday, September 15 - St. Baldrick s Children Cancer Fundraiser The Essex Chapter will host their 12th annual fundraiser from 3pm to 8pm, and needs volunteers willing to have their heads shaved for this charity; to date, more than $800,00 has been raised. 4 SHENANIGANS IN SHILLELAGH LAND The Charlie Donnelly Memorial Golf Outing was a huge success, and as always, it was sold out. It was really sold out; we had 120 golfers from the Old Bridge Club and 16 additional golfers from other chapters. Thanks to Jeff Schuld for chairing this event; The NY Mets bus trip to CitiField was a great success, and the Mets won. Thanks to Joe Patterson for chairing this event; Jamie O Kane has retired as the FSOS Financial Secretary. President Schuld had a plaque created commending Jamie for his 25 years of hard work and will present it to him shortly; With the installation of several additional cameras, we have finished upgrading our video surveillance system inside and outside the building, to encompass 19 cameras; It was reported that the cost of the bar s soda purchases was $0 last month. Way to go! The new Countdown Clock to Saint Patrick s Day is operational. Look for our beloved FSOS logo; it has a special place in the center of the display. FSOS Mixed Bowling League Now forming, 4-person teams consisting of singles or couples for a Handicap League. It will be once a month, on a Saturday night beginning September 2018 and going thru May The venue, exact start date and time are to be determined, and the costs will be $25 per person, each month. 5 Historic Dates in August August 4, The U.S. Coast Guard was created by Congress and was named the Revenue Marine. Its original purpose was to collect customs duties in the nation s seaports; eventually it was renamed the Coast Guard. Widely unknown is fact that besides protecting the US coastlines and waterways, as a branch of our country s five Armed Services, the Coast Guard has been involved in every overseas U.S. war from 1790 to the Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan. August 15, 1945 Victory in Japan Day or V-J Day : when Japan formally agreed to an unconditional surrender, ending World War II, six years after the war began in Europe. It is estimated that well over 50 million people were killed. August 9, 1974 President Richard Nixon became the only US president to resign from office. August 21, 1879 At 8pm on a rainy night in the village of Knock, Co. Mayo, 15 people witnessed an Apparition of Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist, a lamb and cross, on an altar at the gable wall of their Parish Church. The site is now called Ireland s National Marian Shrine, and every year, tens of thousands of visitors make a pilgrimage to the Knock Shrine. August 22, 1922 During the Irish Civil War, the Irish National Army s commander-in-chief, Michael Collins, was assassinated in an ambush while travelling through County Cork, at the village of Béal na mbláth. His funeral was the largest funeral procession ever. August 24, 1814 British forces invaded Washington, D.C., setting fire to several U.S. government buildings, including the White House. Just an Observation Attendance at our meetings has become rather light; there were only about 50 members in attendance last month. Remember, it s your club, so, if possible, attend the meetings. As a reminder, our monthly meetings are closed to all non-members. It is August and vacations are upon us; but that does not mean that the club is closed. Just an Observation Have you ever noticed how heavy cows, horses & elephants are? They eat grass every day, all day long, and get fatter and fatter. So much for the theory of eating greens to maintain your weight! The more you weigh, the harder it is to be kidnapped. So, stay safe by eating plenty of cake!

One does not realize how much work he put into researching, compiling, typing, and then reading his historical Irish story at the end of each month s meeting.
