Well, I wish I were better about getting these articles out. The whole rest of the team had their articles to Judy, and she has been ready to roll, except for my article. So, my apologies for being so late. I m happy to report that we have a District Ride Coordinator, Gary Smith. Gary was a perfect fit for the position. He, along with Chapter F Team had developed a whole ride schedule at various locations around the state and were inviting the entire district to join the rides. So, the work was done. Since then, he has worked with Walter Clement and has completed the paperwork and necessary interview to install Walter as the Ride Coordinator for TX-A1 and has candidates for other chapters. So, thanks to Gary for stepping up. I know we will have a great riding season for Congratulations to Debbie Sciortino from Chapter F for becoming a Senior MEP. It is well deserved and quite an honor. She may be the only Senior MEP in the District. For years she has served Chapter F as MEP, as well has helping with District events and has always gone the extra miles and smiles. We are pretty close to having a venue for a Four Corners Rally next year. Lisa and I joined with folks from Colorado for a site visit, and we felt that everything went well. The pricing is good, the food is good, great rooms and good convention space. We have a few details to work out but feel positive about the rally. We are trying to do this together to same all of us some time and money so see our friends from around the former Region F. In the past we had 6 District rallies, Plus the Region Rally and Wing Ding, so 8 Rallies for the year. It looks like California and Nevada are going to do a combined rally, and then NM, AZ, CO and UT will do one rally, plus Wing Ding, so we reduce the number of rallies by 5. If you haven t heard, there is a new Officer Handbook which reflects the new structure and other changes. There are no secrets and the handbook is available to all on this link. Thanks to all the NM volunteers who worked at the Goodie Store at Wing Ding. I hope you met some new friends and had some fun along the way. We all need to pitch in at these events, so thanks again. You really stepped up, and made the Goodie Store a success, once again. Thanks also to John Metts for carrying the NM Flag at opening ceremonies. We re getting close to the end of the year, and time to start making plans for We need to ensure that all chapters have the necessary officers in place, think about your 2019 Couple of the Year, and even a draft ride schedule. 6

ATGATT - All The Gear All The Time. Now, I know what you're thinking this means, but, let me offer a bit of a twist. An associate of mine rides an older Kawasaki Voyager at least around town here in Roswell. Ironically, to me at least, he's a health nut about the type of food one should eat to live a long and healthy life. BUT, there he is wearing no helmet and sandals for Heaven's sake! Shortsleeved shirt, and denim (at least). Itching for a not so good outcome, in my humble opinion. At least he's eating right, right? So, true to form most of us put on everything we can to protect ourselves should something happen. And, enough of us have had experience with what could happen. We've been schooled in it and make our own decisions. Good enough. Now, just a week and one-half ago, it was 97F here in Roswell and as I sit here it is 40F! What happened to Fall? Where's all that great riding in the 70s? Some of you reading this will already have experienced snow in mid-october! That is crazy in my book. The earliest I recall seeing snow in Roswell was one day before Halloween; we marched around the neighborhood with our daughter in about 1" of the frozen stuff. It reminded me of what we typically check for on our rides prior to setting off. All the gear in this case means warm, cool, rain and maybe even snow or mountain hail. I'm a bit soft I guess in that I won't typically take off in adverse conditions, be it high heat, rain or cold. But, we've all been caught in the environment(s) where we had to stop and adjust or stop and hang out while a storm passed on by. In my bags, I'll make sure I have my Frogg- Toggs for rain, my armored jacket and liner; I have one for colder weather and one for warmer weather. I have helmet caps to keep the sweat out of my helmet, a cooling vest or cooling shirt. Gloves, of course; both hot and cool versions. On longer trips I'll add slip-on shoes to give my feet a breath from the boots and let the boots dry out. Of course, on chapter events I'm adding my vest and always bring a cap to cover up the messy mop on top; although that's getting a little thin these days. Around this country, if you think about it, we typically travel over 100 miles on a day's ride and don't think much about it. Funny part is, most days start 30 to almost 50 degrees from where the mid-day or evening temperature ends. Add to that a rapid ascent or descent from the desert floor to alpine mountain roads, wind, rapid-developing storms and you have a reason to carry All The Gear All The Time. I'm a little spoiled I suppose in not wanting to be too uncomfortable by taking so much gear along. But think about this, when you are facing an adverse situation where your attention is drawn away from the road because you are too cold, hot or whatever, you could be increasing your risk against a safe ride. So, next time you consider heading out into the great wide "unknown" act like you've been there before and make sure you have All The Gear! Ride Safe! 7

Gary Smith & Trish Warwick Hello to everyone. We hope that you all are well. Much has happened since our last article, and it is important for everyone to be updated. At our September F Gathering, we announced that we would be stepping down as Chapter F Directors at the end of this year. The end of December we will have completed two years as the F Directors, and we believe that it is important to have others come in with new goals and new fun ideas. Chapter F is in great shape with over 100 members and a strong treasury. So with all this in mind, we now move on to our next adventure..... About 6 months ago, Tom and Lisa Evans asked if we would be interested in being the NM District Ride Coordinators. Tom advised that we were basically already doing the job as we always have invited all NM to participate in our aggressive ride schedule; which, took us all over the state. At that time, we felt that we had enough to keep us busy with the several hats already being juggled on our heads. We would have just been putting too much on our plates if we took on another title and duties, so we declined. Fast forward - About a month ago, Tom and Lisa again asked and we have accepted the District Ride Coordinators position for NM. Being that our chapter director duties are coming to a close, we feel that we can step up and help with more of our NM District needs. The test has been completed and we were approved by national to be the NM District Ride Coordinator. So, here are our thoughts on the matter: First, we believe that people join the GWRRA to ride! They stay in GWRRA because of all the friendships they make; but, they initially join to get out and ride and have friends to ride with. So, the plan is simple; get Chapter Ride Coordinator's in place for each chapter and get the chapters riding again. Walter Clements, with TX-A1, has already stepped up, taken the test and has been appointed as their Chapter Ride Coordinator. Keith Rhodes and Mark Rowe from Chapter D have both stepped up and will be testing in the very near future. Note: The test is about 35 questions, it is open book, you can take as much time as you want to finish it and most importantly, it is a no pass/no fail test. The test exists to help familiarize you with GWRRA Rider Education and Ride Coordinator duties. It is good information and fairly easy to get thru. Second, start actively recruiting new members. It is important to note that the chapters that are getting most of the new members are the chapters that are riding. We need to get the Chapter Ride Coordinators in place for each chapter. We can at any time plan some member recruiting drives in each area. In conclusion, with the new Goldwing out and the renewed interest in touring bikes; we are seeing a lot more Goldwing riders on the road here in Albuquerque but they are not members. So, we see no reason why we cannot increase our membership within all NM Chapters. As you all know, the more we increase our membership, the more new friends we have to share wonderful times with. A Check-In on Chapter F Chapter F has been extremely busy riding to and visiting several Native American Culture sites during the past 3 months. These rides went to the Acoma Sky City, the Puye Cliff Dwellings, the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Another ride went to the Jemez Pueblo and another back to the Jemez Mountains for our annual burger burn in July. On Sept. 22., we head to the three Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument Abo Ruins, Gran Quivira Ruins and Quarai Mission Ruins which are located around Mountainair. We have joined forces again with Chapters W and N to offer a combined Christmas Party. It will be a luncheon event, held on December 1 st in Albuquerque. This is open to all members but we will need an RSVP as soon as possible. More information forthcoming very soon. 8

Drivers are using their onboard technical safety systems as their primary source of input, rather than as a backup. With all the added features, motorists are paying a lot less attention to the road. Threewitt., C., (2017) How Stuff Works, Do Our Driving Skills Diminish When Technology Takes Over? Motorists are becoming less dependent on their ability to drive and more dependent on their vehicle to make decisions. A recent study by the American Automobile Association (AAA) found that navigation systems were the most demanding distractions and tuning the radio and programming navigation took drivers eyes off the road longer than calling/dialing or texting. Threewitt., C. (2017) The study also found that drivers with blind spot detection systems have the tendency to rely on technology and change lanes without checking for traffic. The more onboard technology increases, the more drivers will become distracted and the hazard to motorcyclists will also increase. There's no question that manufactures are racing to add technology into vehicles. Self-driving cars are coming. Being aware is taking on new meaning. We must be cognizant of what to be aware of. Today, we are more conscious of driver intentions and less mindful of the automatic vehicle decision making. We must retrain our brains to become more aware of vehicle decision processes as well as anticipating the driver s actions. We must become increasingly knowledgeable of the technology on the road and the potential dangers they may present. Traversing through these road hazards are rapidly becoming an art. GWRRA has classes taught by experts who are trained in presenting critical safety information. As the road hazards increase, members of the University Training staff and Rider Educators are developing modules to address the shifting methodologies for motorcycling safety. You can find classes on a variety of subject matters. Running Mountains, Hills and Curves, Riding at Night, Distracted Driving and for the those who find themselves in a precarious situation such as a motorcycle crash, there are classes in Motorcycle Crash Scene Response. In addition to classroom lessons, we have practical hand-on training - such as the Advanced Riding Courses. The real debate at this point is who will get there first; the automobile companies building and installing progressive technology, or the motorcyclist learning how to detect and avoid the dangers of these advanced driving machines. In a motorcycle crash there are no real winners. As drivers become more distracted we should ride like master chess players; detecting and anticipating the motion of a vehicle before it happens. All of these courses can be scheduled and taught at a location of your choosing. We thank you for your interest as we roll out new and exciting programs. At your next meeting, ask you chapter director to arrange a class. THREEWITT., C., (October 11, 2017) Do Our Driving Skills Diminish When Technology Takes Over? Retrieved, October 13, 2018, from 9

Chris Boyle I have recently had the pleasure to recognize several members who have achieved their Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider, Level IV. In addition, several members have been recognized under the Masters Recognition Program. And you thought all the fun ended once you reached Level IV. No way and you ask what s this Recognition Program all about and am I eligible? Well, below is a quick summary and current Masters should take note. Masters Recognition Program This program recognizes years in the Masters Program in increments of 5, 10, and 15 years. Simply fulfilling longevity requirements does not meet the requirements of this program. The member must remain certified during the time requirements. What this means is that their training such as First Aid/CPR, Advanced or Trike Rider Courses, 2-Up or Co-Rider Seminars remain current. If the member remains current, he/she can be eligible for the following recognition and patch: Senior Master 5 years from the year of Level IV. Grand Master 10 years from the year of Level IV. Life Grand Master 15 years from the year of Level IV. So, all you Masters out there should mark your calendars and try to remain current. While we re at it, let s pen a few more sentences and summarize Levels I-IV: Level I current Membership and expressed commitment to strive for and practice safe riding. Level II enrolled in Level I and has 5, 000 Safe Miles, proper licensing, and completed an onbike rider course (Advanced Rider or Trike Rider Courses, etc.) within the last 3 years. Co-Riders satisfy the Safe Miles requirement and have completed a 2-Up or Co- Rider Seminar within the last 3 years. Level III Current in Level II and current in First Aid/CPR certifications and carries a first aid kit on the bike. Level IV Current in Level III for at least one year; ridden a minimum of 25,000 Safe Miles; current in First Aid and CPR certifications and wears proper riding apparel at all times while riding. If members have any questions about the Levels program or their current Levels status, don t hesitate to let me know. THINK Make Every Ride A Safe One 10

Hello Goldwingers! Attached is the registration form for the May 30 June 1, 2019 Missouri GWRRA District Rally for your review and submission. The 2019 Rally is pleased to offer you new attractions. Ride on the Branson Scenic Railway at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 30th or 2:00 p.m. on Friday May 31st, The ride boards at Branson Landing and lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. It is a 40 mile round-trip excursion through the panoramic Ozark foothills. You will go through tunnels and cross bridges & trestles. Your travel will be on vintage passenger cars pulled by the BSRX 98 Locomotive (1951) and the BSRX 99 Locomotive (1962) through Southwest Missouri or Northwest Arkansas. Being a commercial railroad line, The Missouri & Northern Arkansas Railroad will determine the train s direction of travel depending on the freight traffic just prior to departure. Historical narration is provided. There are 3 Budd Dome Lounge cars (1947, 1952). Seating is unassigned and you are encouraged to tour through the entire train. All the cars have been restored and refurbished to offer the same first-class experience and ambiance to today s passengers as to those they carried 50 year ago. There is a concession area aboard the Silver Lake Car (1951) that offers refreshments for purchase. And of course, at the end of your ride, there is a gift shop in the train depot that carries many train items. It is suggested that you make your reservations through the attached GWRRA Registration form as early as possible. The 2018 GWRRA Rally had an attendance of 576 people. Thank you Goldwingers! We aim to please each of you with the return of fabulous vendors, a new caricature artist, the highest cash 50/50 drawings daily in rally history, free meals, great discounted meals, and new vendors. And let s face it we have reasonable hotel accommodations. This year we have Sight & Sound Theatre s SAMSON Biblical show discounted for you. This is an unforgettable exploration of the story of Samson. Sight & Sound Theatre combines original music and script with acting, special effects, vibrant costumes and live animals. You will follow the journey of Samson as he fulfills his path of obeying God. Samson was born with great strength and grew to face many trials, tribulations as well as triumphs. This is an immersive production and one of the best attractions in Branson. Come to Branson I don t think you will be disappointed. Ken Lueckenotte G. W. R. A. A.
