Page 2 W President s Message June 8, 2010 e had a great turnout of our chapter members at the Golden Corral in Winder. Our thanks go to Dot and Buddy Hunt for making all the arrangements and furnishing the door prizes. We want to welcome our newest members to our Studebaker Family. They are David and Sharon Stone, and Mark Vail. Our membership is up to 63 now, according to Charlotte Delli. FANTASTIC! We did well on the 50/50 drawing, adding $53 to the club treasury. Thanks to all who drove their Studebakers. It really does draw a lot of attention and you wouldn t believe how many times we ve gained new members, or located savable Studebakers. Please remember to check the calendar of upcoming events. You can t ask for a better place to show off your Stude than a local car show or cruise-in. Barbara and I heard from Charleen Carey on Monday afternoon. She is back home and resting, and said she is feeling much better this time around. I m sure she would appreciate a phone call or a card. I also talked with Tom Elliott. He, Maureen, and Matthew Burnette from the South Georgia Chapter, had a great time at the International Meet in Glendale, Arizona. He was very excited to meet up with old friends from all across the country. Tom apologized for not being at the meeting Sunday, as they didn t arrive back in Atlanta until late Saturday evening, and got home to find late visitors. Please keep Tom and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he continues his battle with ALS. We are now taking volunteers for 2011 monthly chapter meetings. Ann Lee has, once again, graciously volunteered to assemble the calendar. Please contact her to host a meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone at our July meeting, being hosted by Henry and Loretta Malin. Location, directions and information are on page 11. Remember. Please Drive Safely. Studebakerly, Dan Miller

Page 5 North Georgia Chapter, Studebaker Drivers Club Meeting Minutes June 6, 2010 President Dan Miller opened the meeting. Thanks to Buddy and Dot Hunt for hosting us this afternoon at the Golden Corral. We welcomed our visitors and guests, and announced birthdays, anniversaries, and those we need to keep in our thoughts and prayers. David and Sharon Stone were here today as new members Welcome! Guests today included: Janet Alspach s mother Verona Hoog; Henry and Loretta Malin s granddaughter Allison, prospective member Mark Vail, and Carl Ziglin. Charleen Carey went back into the hospital last week for more kidney-related surgery. She told Barbara Miller that she is feeling better; we will keep you up to date as to her progress. Marvin and Carolyn Sikes were here with Carolyn s new 1963 Avanti. It is great to see Carolyn doing so well in recuperating from her extensive back surgery. We ll also want to keep in mind Ina Greene, who has been hospitalized recently. Tom and Maureen Elliott are attending the International Meet in Arizona with Matthew Burnette of the South Georgia Chapter. They are knee-deep in the process of converting their garage into more ground-floor living space, and have hired a specialized home health care aide to give Tom a hand while Maureen is at the office. Our chapter was well-represented at the tour of Milton Robson s car museum on May 22 nd. Members taking in all the sights included: Charlie and Hellen Attaway, Hobo and Brenda Bodkin, Ed and Steve Burris with Ed s 64 Avanti, Jim Carto with his 63 Avanti, Chris Collins, Howard and Beverley Engle, Buddy and Dot Hunt with their 61 Champ, Wayne and Ann Lee, Lenny and Phyllis Major, Pete McCaffrey with his 64 GT Hawk, Jim Masone and Charles Collins, Dan and Barbara Miller with their 59 Silver Hawk, and Marvin and Carolyn Sikes. Barbara provided some updates on the Southeast Zone Meet, including areas where we need help from our members: Buddy Hunt has been in contact with the owner of the parking lot adjoining the hotel. We have their permission to use it for our vehicle display area, pending our providing information on insurance coverage and our plans for security. Ann Lee and Barbara are working on the table decorations for the banquet. Brenda Bodkin will help collect and store door prizes. We need member contributions for this. After the meeting, Rich Knoblock made the first door prize donation: a very nice blue jacket with the Studebaker script embroidered on the back. Thank you Rich! We also need items such as pens, calendars, etc. for the goody bags. You can contact Barbara about contributing something, or simply bring your items to the next meeting. Another way to help is by sponsoring trophies, at $12.00 per trophy. Contact Buddy and Dot Hunt if you would like to be a sponsor. The meet logo is finalized. Charlotte Delli is getting quotes on having the t-shirts made. We will use a good-quality white shirt to provide a neutral background for the logo. (continued next page)

We want to have some fun prizes in concert with the meet theme, such as for best scarecrow decoration, best scarecrow in or alongside your car, etc. We have eight reservations so far. Chris has sent the reservation forms to all the Southeast Zone newsletter editors, so we should begin seeing registrations from folks outside our chapter. We do need someone to manage the on-site registrations during the meet weekend. Dan spoke with Ed Burris while Ed was at the International Meet in Arizona. Ed will give us a more complete recap of the meet next month, but some highlights are: Effective January 1 st 2011, SDC annual dues will increase from the present $27.50 per year to $31.00 per year. This is the first dues increase since The initial proposal was to increase dues to $44. Ed then proposed a smaller increase to $31 which was passed. Thank you Ed, for being a strong advocate for the club members! Starting around September, Turning Wheels will be wrapped in plastic before mailing. This extra step should greatly reduce instances of TW being damaged in transit. The board of directors is considering the best way to recognize SDC members who have recently passed away. Running special recognition columns in the newsletter or producing a separate remembrance book are among the ideas being reviewed. The 2011 International Meet will be in Springfield, Missouri, followed by 2012 in South Bend and 2013 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Chris Collins (Mrs. Chuck Collins) of Arizona s Grand Canyon State Chapter won 1 st place in the newsletter judging for The Echo. Your very own Chris Collins won 2 nd place with The Hillholder. Dave Miller of the South Georgia Chapter won First-year editor recognition for The Smoke Signal. Buddy and Dot handed out flyers for the Jefferson Lions Club meet; the flyer will also be in The Hillholder. It s hard to believe, but 2011 will be here before we know it. Ann Lee is putting together our 2011 schedule of chapter meetings; contact her to host a meeting. We have a fresh supply of the What s it all about pamphlets which members can give to prospects as a brief overview of Studebaker and the SDC. See Dan or Barbara at the next meeting to pick up some. Charlotte presented the Treasurer s report; a copy will be in the newsletter. Starting in July, Charlotte will provide a separate report for Zone Meet-related financial activity. We now are up to 63 memberships, according to Bill Delli. Brenda Phillips won the 50/50 drawing, splitting the $106 pot with the chapter. Door prize winners included: Hobo Bodkin, Chris Collins, Bill Delli, Howard Engle, Rich Knoblock, Pete McCaffrey, Barbara Miller, Carolyn Sikes, and Carl Ziglin. Our next meeting will be on July 11 th (second Sunday of the month) at the Ryan s Grill/Buffet/Bakery in Cartersville. Details and a map will be in The Hillholder. No need to RSVP. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. See you next month at Ryan s! Page 6

Page 8 Hawaii and Studebakers; or, What I Did On My Summer Vacation by Alan Ziglin In May Rochelle and I left for a two week vacation in Hawaii to celebrate our 40 th wedding anniversary. In preparing for the trip, I of course wondered if we d get to see any Studebakers while we were there I mean why would anyone go to Hawaii unless there were Studebakers to be seen? Well, we saw only a few old cars..several VW Beetles, a number of VW vans, a couple Model A Fords and one beautiful 1956 Plymouth which had a for sale sign in the window. We saw the Plymouth from the window of the tour bus one day while we were on an excursion. Amazingly, the bus driver did not see the importance of stopping so I could get a better look at the car!! I did get a quick picture in which, even when I enlarged it, I still could not read the phone number. (Funny, but when I told Rochelle that I could not read the phone number, she made a sound very similar to the sound someone would make when breathing a sigh of relief!!?!) Anyway, the closest I came to seeing a Studebaker was in one of the restaurants we went to. They had a picture on the wall of what the area looked like in 1957 and there in the picture was a Studebaker partially blocked from view by a 1953 Chevrolet. I quickly realized that I was in an area that was clearly deprived, since there was no Studebaker presence to be found. My challenge was determining how to fix that. Half of our Hawaiian vacation was spent on a cruise ship and the ship had night club type entertainment each night. One night they had performers from the well-known Chicago comedy club named Second City. These were entertainers who specialized in Improvisation (or Improv), which is when the performers respond to things called out from the audience and have to improvise to comply with those suggestions. In one segment, four comedians had to act like they were attending a party at the fifth comedian s home. Each of the four guests had to change during the party from who they were to something else. The host then had to figure out who or what each guest was changing into. For instance one woman had to change into a state (the audience gave her Massachusetts to change into). One actor simply had to change into anything someone shouted from the audience. Before anyone else in the audience could say anything, I shouted a Studebaker! And so he had to act like he was turning into a Studebaker as the party progressed, while the host of the party tried to figure out what he was turning into. (continued next page)

Well, as the actor changed into a Studebaker, he told his host that he was very old and the he had brought the container of stew to the party. He also made car noises. At one point the person playing the host of the party guessed he was a Model T Ford. The guy turning into a Studebaker said no he did not think he was that old! (Keep in mind none of the comedians was alive when Studebaker made their last vehicle.) Finally, the host had gotten what, or who, each of the other three guests were turning into, but still could not get Studebaker. Then one of the guests told the host that he had brought a bag of donuts and that there were thirteen donuts in the bag. At that point the party host said, a baker s dozen and from there he put stew and baker together and figured the guest was turning into a STUDEBAKER!!!! Knowing that they could not beat that, the comedians concluded their program for the night. So there you have it, on my vacation I made sure that five comedians and a couple hundred people in the audience all thought about Studebakers for a least a few minutes! I guess I don t have to tell you that my evening at the Improv Show made for my greatest vacation memories...interestingly, periodically during my vacation, I overheard other people talking about the breath-taking scenery Hawaii had to offer.i m not sure what they were referring to, but I sure liked my night of Studebaker Improv! P.S. During the cruise, a group of women who were guests on the cruise ship met several times learning to Hula dance. Near the end of the cruise, they gave a Hula dance performance onstage in the theater onboard the ship. The picture below shows them in the middle of their performance. The woman in the middle of the front row in the yellow dress looks just like a woman I often see at the Studebaker Drivers Club-North Georgia Chapter meetings. If I m not mistaken, I seem to recall seeing her elsewhere too.. Page 9

Page 18 STUDEBAKER MEDIA This is a 99 page book based on the articles of the same name that appeared in Turning Wheels in the early 1990s and which won the SDC's Churchill Award for Best Article, Non-Paid. The book contains all the material from the original series, which ran for a year and a half in The Hillholder, and not only replaces some material edited out for the TW series, but has updates and several new items that were written after the TW series was published. "Some Thoughts" is aimed at the first-time restorer, but will be of value to the more experienced; it doesn't try to be a "how to restore a car book", but gives you a look at the decision-making processes, tools, spaces and basic skills you'll need to do a restoration, and will provide a framework to help you structure your project. There are several chapters of Studebaker-specific advice. In the chapter devoted to engine rebuilding, I've tried to describe a step-by-step process that anybody can follow, and I ve tried to include tips I've picked up in building 60+ engines. I've received many compliments on the engine chapter, and I'm glad to finally be able to get it in print. Some Thoughts on Restoring a Studebaker is available for $22.50 USD, plus $4 for handling and postage, for a total of $26.50 to US addresses. Canadian orders add $6.50 USD for postage, total $29.00 USD. To order a second book in the same order, add an additional $3 ($4 USD for Canadian orders). For Australia and Europe, shipping is $12, total $34.50 USD paid by PayPal only. The easiest way to purchase (and the only way if you are in Australia or Europe) is to PayPal the appropriate amount to me at, and mention Some Thoughts in the remarks section. Otherwise, if you live in the US or Canada, send your name, mailing address and a check or USPS money order for $26.50 ($29.00 USD bank draft for Canadian buyers) to: Chuck Lampman 4141 Lynette Ct. Kennesaw, GA If mailing payment, please me to notify me that the check is coming so I can set one aside for you, or get some more printed. (I try not to keep too big an inventory because they are expensive to stock.) (8/2010)
