2 Welcome to the ACPET Asia Pacific International Education Forum Darwin Gateway 2011 We are pleased to be able to conduct the first ACPET Asia Pacific International Education Forum in Darwin. This one day forum hosted by ACPET is designed to showcase the approaches to international engagement through education and training in the Northern Territory. We would like to acknowledge the support of our event sponsors, Northern Territory Government and Charles Darwin University without whom this event would not be possible. We hope that over the forum you realise the opportunities that lie ahead in positioning your organisation effectively and find value in the information and networking opportunities provided. ACPET would also like to acknowledge the support and funding from AusAID in assisting us to bring to Darwin international Official Forum Hosts delegates representing the region to the event. We have delegates from Thailand, Sri Lanka, East Timor, China, Philippines and Fiji joining us, their contribution will be invaluable. We look forward to ongoing engagement both bilaterally and regionally to leverage private education and training as drivers for the future growth and prosperity of the region. Forum Facilitator Kay Ganley RICHARD TEO Claire Field Ingeborg Loon Michael Hall David Cannon Kay Ganley is the owner and CEO of Australian RTO CHARLTON BROWN. CHARLTON BROWN delivers Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs in the Community Services sector. The College delivers training across Australia, as well as in the Asia Pacific region including Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and China. Expanding internationally presented potential risks and challenges, but under Kay s guidance, the business continues to grow and expand into new areas. Capt. Richard Teo is a leading expert in marine transport systems and global supply chain operations. He has over 40 years of multi modal shipping experience in the international business of freightment, ship management, charters, offshore ONG supply base shipping and operations. His career has included Greenfield and turnkey projects in facilitating shipbuilding yards and technology transfers. Richard is a Master Mariner (unlimited); holds two Masters Degrees in International Management, and Post graduate degrees in Business Administration and Teaching. He is presently the CEO/Director of Seafood & Maritime Industries Training Ltd and GlobalMET. Claire was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) in January 2011, having initially joined ACPET as Deputy CEO in June Ingeborg Loon s professional career in education (and tourism) export spans 18 years. She has held senior international marketing and business development roles at TAFE Queensland International, the University of Queensland and Griffith University before joining ACPET. Michael Hall has worked for the Queensland branch of ACPET since Michael s role as ACPET Queensland and Northern Territory Executive Officer is that of advocate for the growing private education and training sector, and in ensuring that practitioners have access to relevant, current and supportive services to assist in attaining the best possible outcomes for their students and their organisations. Michael is passionate in promoting a collegiate, cooperative and responsive education and training sector to maximise opportunities for students, industry, teachers and trainers. Michael has a Bachelor of Arts (University of Queensland) and a Bachelor of Business (Queensland University of Technology) and is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. David Cannon is the Principal/CEO of The Essington School Darwin. Prior to coming to Darwin, David was in leadership positions at Xavier College and Kingswood College in Melbourne for twenty one years. He has completed post graduate studies at Deakin University, Melbourne University and Monash University in Melbourne. In his twelve years at The Essington School Darwin, David has been actively involved in education at a Territory and national level. He has always had a focus on high quality education, vocational education and training, and international education. He has been a member of the Northern Territory Board of Studies for nine years, Deputy Chair of the Association of Independent Schools of the NT, and served at national level on the ACPET Board for six years, the Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) Board for six years. He is currently on the National Executive Committee of the Association of Primary Principals Association (APPA), and is Chair of the NT Chapter of the Australian College of Education (ACE) and on their national Board. In 2009 David was awarded a Fellowship by ACEL. Previously, Claire was with TVET Australia for three years where she was initially responsible for the establishment of the National Audit and Registration Agency (NARA). Claire has extensive experience in the VET sector having worked in a range of strategic policy, planning and performance review roles at both the national and State government level. Ingeborg has recently joined ACPET as the International Engagement Manager, based in Canberra. She is focused on raising the profile of Australia s private tertiary sector through the strengthening of ACPET s collaboration with the Australian government and key international stakeholders in particular.

Dr Burns is also Leader of Government Business. In 20 years of working across the VET. Business and employment sectors in the NT, Rob has lived and worked in the regional centres of Alice Springs and Katherine and the last 10 years in Darwin. Rob has been directly involved in the inception of competency based training into t he NT, the national training reform agenda, and development of industry training packages. Rebecca Hall is an international relations specialist, with over 15 years experience in the international education sector. During this time she has worked across all three levels of government with roles spanning industry development, economic development, international relations and marketing. Rebecca is a passionate advocate for international education and has a unique understanding of the critical factors impacting institutions and communities in a globalised world. She was an elected board member of the International Education Association of Australia ( ) and currently holds positions on the Board of the Queensland Overseas Foundation (2008~) and the Australian Institute of International Affairs Queensland State Council (2011~). Rebecca is a teaching fellow and PhD candidate with Bond University and her research focuses on international education as public diplomacy. Her qualifications include Graduate Certificate Higher Education, Master of International Business Relations, Bachelor of International Relations and a Diploma of Export Management. Prior to entering Parliament, Dr Burns was Director of the National Heart Foundation (NT) with national responsibilities for developing collaborative programs in a range of areas to address cardiovascular health issues in the Indigenous population. From , he was a Research Officer and Public Health and Research Development Committee Scholar at Menzies School of Health Research. His main research areas related to Aboriginal Health, particularly the delivery of health services and the development of programs to address drug and alcohol issues. Dr Burns has also worked as a lecturer in Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of New England, Armidale between Since 2008, Rob has moved into Employment Strategy within the Department of Business and Employment, overseeing the development of Jobs NT Employment Strategy and working with key industry groups and employers on employment shortages and workforce planning.
4 Forum speakers General information Kelly Morrissey Renkang Peng Lorraine Sushames Kelly Morrissey is the Learning and Development Superintendent for Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), based at the Ranger Mine, Jabiru NT. Kelly is responsible for ensuring all ERA personnel have the skills and knowledge to meet individual learning needs and the operational requirements of an active uranium mine. ERA is one of the largest uranium producers in the world, providing around eight per cent of global primary uranium production. Kelly has a background in Adult Education; in particular in vocational education and training. Most recently, she worked for a Railway company with sole responsibility for implementing elearning, blended learning and virtual simulations for 16,000 staff. She has also worked in leadership roles at Charles Sturt University, American Express, Insurance Australia Group, Texas Utilities and various registered training organisations (RTO s). Kelly s specific areas of expertise are in learning design and training evaluation. Kelly holds a Bachelors Degree in Adult Education, and a Masters Degree in Education. Renkang Peng together with Keith Christian and Karen Gibb was the winner of Tropical Knowledge Research Award, Research and Innovation Board of Northern Territory Government He has over 30-year experience working with eight crops in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Since 1993, he has been concentrating on the R&D of integrated pest management programs for cashew, mango and agroforest trees in Australia, PNG and south-east Asia. Lorraine Sushames has extensive experience in the VET sector, with a focus on adult literacy practice. She has developed and delivered a range of projects designed to strengthen the capacity of individuals to participate more effectively in society and the workforce. Her research interests reflect these activities, with a particular focus on the northern Australian region, including the role of English literacy in capacity building in Timor Leste. Monica Turvey Ms Monica Turvey is the Director International Strategy and Development, Charles Darwin University. Monica holds a Masters in Arts from University of Papua New Guinea, Graduate Diploma in Education Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education and a Bachelor of Arts (History) from University of Ulster. She has approximately 20 years experience in international education in Australia. Monica has been working at CDU where she is responsible for the strategic direction, development and management of the University s international programs and activities. AUTOMATIC TELLER MACHINE (ATM) There is an ATM located on Mitchell Street across from the Holiday Inn which will take the majority of cards. Please see the reception desk if you require more information on the locations of banks and other ATM s. INTERNET There is a business centre in the Hotel Lobby which costs $5.00 for half an hour and $10 for an hour. If you would like wireless, you will need to see reception to activate it and it is free for the first 20 minutes and then $5.00 per half hour. CATERING Catering will be available during the forum and is included in the registration fee. Please refer to the program for location and times. MOBILE PHONES Delegates are asked to switch off their mobile phones when attending any sessions. CHAIRPERSONS AND SPEAKERS Please ensure that you are available in your presentation room at least ten minutes prior to the start of the session. Speakers, please ensure that you have visited the room you will be presenting in to confirm all audio visual requirements. DIETARY REQUIREMENTS If you have advised the forums secretariat of special dietary requirements, please speak to a member of the catering staff during lunch break, or at any of the functions that you may be attending. Catering staff will have a full list of those with special dietary requirements. DRESS CODE Corporate Casual. EVALUATION FORM Please take a moment to complete your forum evaluation form and return it to the registration desk upon completion of the forum. PARKING The options are: Holiday Inn Esplanade $7.00 per day per parking. Holiday Inn Darwin (next door) free of charge, subject availability and also street parking which hourly fee applies RECEPTION DESK The reception desk is located in the Main Lobby and is open 24 hours. REGISTRATION DESK The registration desk will be located on the first level of the Holiday Inn outside of Ballroom Room 2 where the forum will be conducted. Registration desk will be open from 8.00am. SMOKING There is a hotel breezeway located on the ground floor which has a designated smoking area.
