3 2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT It gives me great pleasure to present the Forum Advocating Cultural & Eco Tourism Inc. (FACET) Annual Report for the period 1 July 2017 to 30 June EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FACET advocates for ecological sustainable tourism that enhances our communities and encourages conservation and appreciation of Western Australia's natural and cultural assets. FACET exists to connect like-minded people and has been facilitating events, learning forums, and networking opportunities for the cultural and eco-tourism sector for over 20 years. As a not-for-profit voluntary organisation, FACET relies heavily on the input of its Board, to ensure the smooth running of the organisation and its ongoing sustainability. FACET s executive committee is a group of passionate individuals representing the diversity and broad range of tourism industry stakeholders, that contribute to the State s nature-based, cultural and heritage tourism sectors. They work tirelessly to ensure that the organisation remains relevant and continues to deliver high quality events and networking opportunities for its members and contribute to the sustainable development of cultural and eco tourism in Western Australia. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all sincerely. 4 The following sub-committees were established to assist the development of policy and support a strategic approach to FACET activities. Shannon gave birth to a little boy and we wish her well for the future. Helena Coulson who represented Tourism WA, also stepped down from the Board in April 2018 to commence maternity leave. Helena contributed significantly to FACET s operations and supported open communication with Tourism WA as a major partner. FACET would like to congratulate Helena on the birth of her daughter and wish her well for the future. Peta McAuliffe of Natural Tourism stepped down from the Board of FACET after contributing for more than 10 years, to follow her love of skiing in the mountains of New Zealand. Recently, Peta chaired the Forum sub-committee and together with other committee members, successfully delivered a program of workshops and forums for our members and the broader tourism industry over a number of years. Peta is passionate about the sustainable development of WA s natural and cultural assets and will be missed by the tourism community. 7 2017 WA TOURISM CONFERENCE September 2017, Albany FACET joined Tourism Council WA, Visitor Centre Association WA and the Caravan Industry Association WA to present the third State Tourism Conference held in September 2017 in Albany. The conference was well-attended with delegates from across the State. FACET received recognition throughout the conference and at the conference dinner including the Top Tourism Town Awards. A hallmark of the conference was FACET s suggestion to take the conference on the road to give delegates an opportunity to experience Albany s recent advances in tourism while at the same time learning more about topics such as destination packaging, product marketing and regional tourism operations. Deputy Chair, Steve Crawford represented FACET at the conference FACET CONFERENCE CELEBRATING OUR PARKS 9-11 October 2017 Government House Perth & John Forrest National Park & Swan Valley FACET partnered with the newly established WA Parks Foundation to deliver its annual tourism conference, Celebrating our Parks. With both organisations dedicated to encouraging people to experience and enjoy WA s natural and cultural landscapes, it was a perfect partnership. Some 350 people from around the State and as far as Papua New Guinea attended the conference. The conference delivered an inspiring, informative and innovative program, showcasing initiatives to connect people with parks, celebrate Aboriginal culture and joint management programs, and demonstrated ways to engage communities, visitors and business with WA s parks and wildlife. It provided a platform to raise awareness and appreciation of our unique and ancient landscapes, and delegates learned of the opportunities for communities to connect with parks. The conference keynote address was delivered by Theresa Pierno, President and CEO of the National Parks Conservation Association in the USA. Theresa shared the US model with delegates and explained how they engage with American people to support and protect their national parks. Other highlights on the program included Dr June Oscar AO, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Social Justice Commissioner, originally from Fitzroy Crossing, who explained the importance of country to Aboriginal people and their culture and Professor Lyn Beazley, AO FTSE Science Ambassador and WA Parks Foundation Ambassador, who enlightened and entertained people in natural science. 5

8 FACET 2017/18 Annual Report Other presentations included innovative educational programs connecting children with nature, engaging with friends groups, philanthropy and parks a case study of a corporate partnership between the Rottnest Foundation and BHP and a number of presentations from tourism operators and Aboriginal tourism initiatives delivered in parks. The conference workshop and field trip were held in the John Forrest National Park, WA s oldest national park. Delegates enjoyed a guided walk into the park, returning to the Margaret Forrest Centre to learn of the new recreation and tourism plan proposed for the park and how the neighbouring Shires of Mundaring and Kalamunda and the City of Swan leverage and work with their parks. Images courtesy of Claire Savage WestCycle and WA Mountain Bike Association explained their role in managing and promoting cycling in parks and Outdoors WA also presented on the health benefits of engaging with parks. The day and conference program concluded with a bush tucker tasting with Dale Tilbrook and lunch at Mandoon Estate. FACET would like to acknowledge the support of Mrs Kerry Sanderson AC, Chair of the WA Parks Foundation and then Governor of Western Australia, for hosting the conference at Government House and her contribution throughout the two-day program and welcome cocktail party. FACET was also pleased to be able to donate $1,548 to support the activities of the WA Parks Foundation from proceeds of a raffle that was held during the Conference Gala Dinner in the Government House Ballroom. Thanks to all those who donated to the prize pool, including Willie Creek Pearls, botanical artist Jacquie Pemberton and Dale Tilbrook of Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery. 9 2017 FACET GOLDEN GUIDE AWARD Janine Della Bosca, Fremantle Prison Congratulations to Janine Della Bosca who was awarded the 2017 FACET Golden Guide Award at the 2017 Perth Airport Western Australian Tourism Awards. Extract from FACET 2018 Newsletter I discovered Tour Guiding later in life, I managed an Education Resource store as a young woman, later changing course to pursue my interest in Visual Arts, completing an Art Degree at Curtin University in Working as a conceptual Visual Artist, my work explored social codes and methods of communication, in particular the spoken word. During my time as an art student I attended some classes in the Women s Division of Fremantle Prison and was immediately captivated (pardon the pun) by the site. Both of my parents were great storytellers. I listened avidly to the tales of goldmining in Kalgoorlie and the teams of horses used to clear the land to farm in the Wheatbelt where I grew up. I loved them with a passion and soaked them all up, now I m telling stories too. In 2010 I was employed as a Tour Guide at Fremantle Prison; it was the year the Prison was added to the World Heritage list. When I attended my first tour at the prison as part of the induction process, I was mesmerised and completely in awe of the site and the history within it, I fell a little bit in love with Fremantle Prison that day. Although my previous jobs had involved regular contact with the public and high standards of customer service, I was a shy person by nature; my training was on site and comprehensive. I soon discovered that when you are truly passionate and authentically engaged in what you are presenting, with some hard work, practice and experience you can excel at public speaking and interpret information clearly and articulately. I discovered a natural aptitude for communication and an ability to establish relationships quickly. I also work very hard on my tours to be respectful and inclusive of all visitors. As a professional Tour Guide I commune the prison s heritage to visitors from all around the world. I am sincerely passionate about my job and continuing the great traditions of storytelling in an accurate, engaging and provocative way. There have been many significant experiences throughout my career; a standout for me was in 2012 when I was involved in the development and ongoing presentation of the Fremantle Prison Art Tour, showcasing artworks by prisoners on the surface of the prison. Later I contributed to the research and editing of a companion publication Art Behind Bars: Murals and Graffiti of Fremantle Prison. 7

10 In 2017 I was proud to conduct the inaugural History of Indigenous Incarceration at Fremantle Prison Tour. The prison s history is often dark and contested, dealing with confronting and difficult content that challenges me to present an objective account of events, whilst being mindful of personal and cultural sensitivities. I readily accept the challenge and consider these specialty tours intrinsic to offering a comprehensive history of the prison. I will present both tours this year as part of the Australian and Fremantle Heritage Festivals. After being a finalist in 2015 and 2016 I was beyond thrilled to win the FACET Golden Guide Award in Of course that meant writing three submissions and I found that process invaluable in terms of defining for yourself as a guide, what your intentions and goals are, and what methods you can implement to achieve them. I feel so honoured and exhilarated to have won this award and be recognised for the hard work and passion that many Tour Guides throughout Western Australia contribute to the Tourism Industry. I believe the importance of excellence in Tour Guiding is paramount to the visitor s experience and this award, recognising the dedication to, and pure joy of interpretation is, in itself a unique and extraordinary gift. It is now nearly eight years since I began my Career and I have never lost the enthusiasm or love of my job and I feel blessed for that. After a challenging ankle surgery last year, I am again doing what I care about, and do best. Fremantle Prison introduced three new day tours in February of this year, so we continue to peel back the layers of heritage, and show areas of the site that were previously inaccessible. 11 OTHER AWARDS Pat Barblett, AM inducted into WA Women's Hall of Fame Pat Barblett, AM founder of FACET was inducted into the WA Women's Hall of Fame on International Women's Day on 8 March at Government House. Pat was acknowledged as a leader in the field of conservation and park management of WA's unique environment. Pat founded FACET in 1991 in response to the rapid growth in nature-based tourism and the need to guide its sustainable development. Having recently stepped down from the Chair, Pat has been the guiding force behind the organisation's success and longevity. Pat was also the first woman appointed to the Rottnest Island Authority Board, serving on the Board for 16 years, and chairing it for 3 years before retiring in Her achievements during her time were many including; the first Environmental Interpretation Plan for the Island, establishment of the Rottnest Museum, converting the Kingstown Army Barracks into the Rottnest Environmental Education Centre and Youth Hostel, establishing the Rottnest Voluntary Guides and Chairing the Rottnest Island Hospital Board. Her conservation involvement did not stop there, she is also the immediate past Chair of the Conservation Commission, where she has been a member for nearly 17 years. Pat was awarded the Sir David Brand Medal in the WA Tourism Awards in 2003, was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2004 for her service to environmental conservation and management, and to the development of ecotourism opportunities in Western Australia and received the Prime Minister's Medal in Hon. Simone McGurk, MLA Minister for Women s Interest & Pat Barblett, AM (left to right) Ryan Mossny, FACET Chair receives 2018 WA Heritage Award for Professional Contribution As co-founder of the heritage walking tour company Two Feet & a Heartbeat, Ryan Mossny has spent the past decade sharing the history and culture of Perth with tens of thousands of visitors and locals. Ryan also makes a wider contribution to the heritage sector through his leadership roles with FACET and the Museum of Perth, dedicated to the social, cultural, political and architectural history of Perth. Ryan generously shares his specialist knowledge by consulting to Local Government and lecturing at TAFE. Ryan Mossny is the co-founder, owner and operator of Two Feet & a Heartbeat walking tours. Two Feet & a Heartbeat is Perth's largest and most awarded walking tour company. Over the past 10 years Ryan has personally showcased WA's history to thousands of visitors and locals alike. Ryan is part of the team that established the Museum of Perth, an organisation that chronicles the social, cultural, political, and architectural history of Perth and currently sits as an executive member of the Board. The main factor contributing to the profit was an increase in partnership and sponsorship support from Tourism WA, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Parks and Wildlife Services and the City of Perth. FACET s forum and workshop program continues to generate important revenue to support ongoing administrative costs and program development. 15 Conclusion As 2018 draws to a close, and I mark my first full year as FACET Chair, it is timely to reflect upon our organisation and the amazing things that have been achieved this year. Of the goals achieved, I am most proud of the Board ratifying our agreement to uphold the Larrakia Declaration on the Development of Indigenous Tourism. This important step will allow FACET to work more closely with the West Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC) and Aboriginal tourism operators across the state. Secondly, over the last 12 months, our finance committee has worked tremendously hard on improving the financial management and budgeting of the organisation, which will allow FACET to better serve you, our members. For the second year in a row, FACET played an integral role in the delivery of the 2017 Western Australian Regional State Tourism Conference, held in Albany on September 11 to I would also like to congratulate the FACET team who worked extremely hard to deliver FACET s 2017 annual tourism conference themed Celebrating our Parks from 9-11 October The conference was a great success and left delegates inspired and excited about the many great tourism initiatives and opportunities being leveraged from WA s unique and extraordinary parks and landscapes. Thinking of our Board, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of those who volunteer their time to help guide this organisation and deliver its amazing events. A special thank you to those board members who will not be returning for next year, and welcome to the new members stepping up to lead FACET. Thanks also to Executive Officer Pauline McMullan for supporting me in my first year as Chair, her support of the Board and being the backbone of FACET. FACET is able to carry out its purpose thanks to the support of our valued partners and sponsors, including Tourism WA, the Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, City of Perth and the Heritage Council of Western Australia. Due to the amazing support of our sponsors and our membership we enjoyed another successful year of events, with 75 people attending our international workshop - The Business of Geotourism and Geoparks in May, followed by the heritage tourism workshop - Our Heritage, Your Point of Difference with another sell-out crowd of 52 attendees. Many other events were near capacity or sold out and this shows the relevance of the events to our membership, and the tourism industry as a whole. I would like to thank the Board and members for welcoming and supporting me in my new role as Chair. As one final note, I would like to mention for one last time, FACET s founder Pat Barblett, AM and thank her for her more than 25 years of dedication to this organisation and for all that she has done for FACET and for the broader West Australian community.
