4 TRAVEL TO MELBOURNE Melbourne Airport is open 24 hours, is curfew free and just a 20 minute drive from the city centre. Travelling from the West From London, you can fly direct to Melbourne or break up the journey with a stop en route. From North America, you can catch a direct flight to Melbourne, as well as a number of single-stop services. From New Zealand, there is a range of flights available to Melbourne, with those from Auckland taking approximately three-and-a-half hours. Key airlines include Qantas, Emirates, British Airways, Virgin, Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines, as well as a host of other European and international airlines. Travelling from the East Four Chinese airlines China Eastern, Air China, China Southern and now, Sichuan Airlines fly direct between Melbourne and Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu. Royal Brunei Airlines has direct services between Melbourne and the Brunei capital Bandar Seri Begawan, and Air India commenced daily flights from India to Melbourne in August Tiger Airways, owned by Virgin, is a low cost carrier operating from its bases in Singapore. It now flies to more than over 50 destinations in 13 countries across Asia and the Pacific. Virgin Australia operates from Melbourne Airport and offers connections to 16 domestic destinations across Australia and 23 international destinations. International airlines fly direct to Melbourne: Melbourne Airport Information - Customs and immigration queues are generally short. Melbourne Airport, which affords easy access to connecting interstate and international flights, has baggage lockers in the international terminal, around-theclock foreign exchange counters, restaurants, bars, a children s playground, information desks, major car rental companies and, for departing travellers, a refund booth to reclaim the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on some goods. There is also ample parking for private vehicles. A departure tax of AU $38 is charged on leaving the country but it is usually incorporated in the airline ticket. 24/7 airport to hotel transportation - The SkyBus express bus service to the city operates 24/7, every 10 minutes. The journey takes just 20 minutes and costs AU$17 one way and AU$28 for a return fare. 5 NEED TO KNOW Money and Taxes Currency exchanges are available at Melbourne Airport, at banks and other locations throughout the city. Travellers cheques and credit cards Brands like American Express and Travelex are widely accepted in Victoria, and can be cashed at banks, foreign exchange brokers, larger hotels and restaurants. Fees for changing travellers cheques vary from bank to bank. Major credit cards Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Bankcard, Diners Club and their affiliates are widely accepted throughout Victoria. Some retailers in larger centres will also accept JCB cards. Goods and Services Tax (GST ) Australia has a GST of 10 per cent on most goods and services including tourism services. International airfares do not attract GST. Departing travellers may be able to claim a refund for GST and WET (Wine Equalisation Tax) paid on goods purchased in Australia. To claim, visitors must make sure they have their passport, international boarding pass, retailer s tax invoice and the goods. Other conditions may apply. Visa Information Australia s Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is the world s most advanced and streamlined travel authorisation system. ETA allows citizens from 30+ countries to access an instant online application. If your country is not listed under ETA, your visa will be processed by the nearest Australian visa processing office. 7 THE PRISON SERVICE While each of the Australian jurisdictions have their own Commissioner, responsible for operating their State Corrections systems; all states share a common goal to ensure this Conference showcases the good Correctional practice from all across Australia. Corrections Victoria a business unit of the Department of Justice and Regulation implements court judgments and orders of the Adult Parole Board. It sets strategy, policy and standards for the management of the state s system of correctional facilities. It also develops programs for the containment and rehabilitation of prisoners and the community-based supervision of offenders. Corrections Victoria has around 6,500 prisoners comprising 450 women and over 6,000 men accommodated across 13 Prisons and a Transitional Centre. The Public, Private and Non-Government Sectors provide services and programs to prisoners across the range of security classifications. Corrections Victoria supervise around 9,000 offenders on Parole and Community Orders reporting to more than 50 Centres across Victoria. Corrections Victoria s purpose is to Deliver Effective Correctional Services for Safer Communities. We achieve this by providing a healthy, constructive environment where prisoners can participate in evidence-based programs to reduce the risk of re-offending. We supervise prisoners as they transition back into the community on Parole, with community safety as our paramount consideration. And we manage offenders on Community Orders as they undertake community work and attend programs to address the causes of their offending.
