WORLD WATER SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS INCREASING SOUTH AUSTRALIA S INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE
INCREASING SOUTH AUSTRALIA S INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE 2036 WILL MARK OUR STATE S BICENTENARY By the time our State turns 200 years old, I want South Australia to be a place of prosperity. Planning and delivering on my vision for a better future starts now. This policy is just one part of our plan to deliver a clear and responsible pathway to recovery and success. See where it fits in below 1.0 GROWING OUR ECONOMY 1.3 Investing in programs to increase export potential of businesses to drive sales and opportunities 2.0 THE BEST EDUCATION SYSTEM 3.0 BEING A HEALTHY STATE 4.0 STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES 5.0 BUILDING OUR STATE 6.0 ENSURING SAFETY AND JUSTICE 7.0 PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT 8.0 EMBRACING OUR UNIQUE CULTURE 8.3 Championing the best of South Australia s unique culture interstate and overseas 9.0 RUNNING AN EFFICIENT AND STABLE GOVERNMENT
We will increase South Australia s international exposure by acting to secure South Australia as a host for the World Water Ski Championships.
INCREASING SOUTH AUSTRALIA S INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE THE OPPORTUNITY The World Water Ski Championships (WWSC) are held every second year and were awarded to New Zealand in 2015, Seattle in 2017 and Malaysia in This international event brings together the world s best ski racers competing for the prestige of being crowned World Champion. The proponents of this event have previously stated that the Torrens is an ideal location to host the WWSC. It s estimated the event could generate $10 million for the state economy and has a worldwide viewership of 300 million. The international exposure from hosting this event would clearly greatly benefit South Australia s international tourism reputation and would showcase the billions of dollars of recent investment in the Riverbank precinct. Bringing together the world s best ski racers, this event has the potential to generate millions for our economy. Water-skiing is also a significant component of Australia s recreational culture, especially in South Australia, given proximity to the Murray River. The Australian Water-ski and Wakeboard Federation estimate that there are 3,500 registered competitive participants of the sport in Australia, with approximately 1.3 million unregistered participants.
INCREASING SOUTH AUSTRALIA S INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE THE STATE LIBERALS PLAN The WWSC is an internationally recognised event, hosting it would mean world wide recognition for our state. If elected in March 2018, a Marshall Liberal Government will use its $40 million Events Bid Fund to bid for the World Water Ski Championships in It would be held over two weeks, with the formalities being concentrated around a 5-6 day period (dependent on weather). Aside from the WWSC, the International World Water Ski Congress meeting is held in the preceding or following week, attracting a host of international delegates. This event is proposed to be held in September, which would assist with filling out South Australia s events calendar. It is proposed that the WWSC would be held on the Torrens in the CBD, west of the Morphett street bridge.
INCREASING SOUTH AUSTRALIA S INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE A Liberal Government will grow tourism and our economy through attracting major international events, such as the World Water Ski Championship, to South Australia. Steven Marshall, State Liberal Leader
