1: Moggill Road Bridge (at Moggill ferry crossing) This river crossing connects Moggill Ferry Road at Riverview with the end of Moggill Road at Moggill where the ferry currently operates. It links the western part of Brisbane, north of the Brisbane River, with Riverview train station and the urban areas of Ipswich. The survey proposed the bridge to be a single road lane in each direction with bike path on one side and footpath on the other, catering for all modes of traffic In your opinion, should this bridge be used for Just over half (57.4%) of respondents supported this bridge option and attracted the highest support for walk, cycle and general lanes for all traffic (i.e., catering for all transport modes). This was to be expected considering that development is sparse on each side of the crossing and public transport is serviced by rail.
2: Bellbowrie - River Hills This river crossing connects Birkin Road at Bellbowrie with Sumners Road at Riverhills. The survey proposed the bridge to be a single road lane in each direction with bike path on one side and footpath on the other, catering for all modes In your opinion, should this bridge be used for Just over half (53.5%) of respondents supported this bridge option. This was one of the least supported bridges, however only 9.9% of people surveyed did not support a bridge option. This bridge option received the 3 rd highest support (59.3%) for walk, cycle and general lanes for all traffic (i.e., catering for all transport modes). Only 7.1% of votes indicated that this bridge should be utilised for walking and cycling trips.
3: Centenary Motorway Upgrade This river crossing was proposed as a major upgrade of the Centenary Motorway Bridge to 8 lanes, with associated upgrades along and across the Centenary Motorway from Legacy Way outbound to the Ipswich Motorway interchange Should a toll be charged on motorists to pay for this river crossing upgrade? Yes No This bridge option showed the highest levels of support (75.4%) of all the options. It also received the lowest level of neutral responses, indicating that most respondents had firm opinions on whether this option is worthy of construction. Of all responses, 82.8% of those living in Western Brisbane suburbs supported the Centenary Motorway bridge and 86.9% of those living in Ipswich City suburbs supported the Centenary Motorway bridge. When asked if a toll should be imposed on motorists to pay for this river crossing upgrade, 70.1% of those surveyed indicated no support for this.
4: Walter Taylor Bridge This river crossing was proposed to duplicate the Walter Taylor Bridge from Indooroopilly to Chelmer by adding a new bridge immediately downstream of the Jack Pesch pedestrian and bicycle bridge. The additional bridge was proposed as a single road lane in each direction catering only for car and bus traffic (due to the existing Jack Pesch active transport bridge) - or to provide the southbound movement on the new proposed bridge, with Walter Taylor Bridge catering for northbound traffic Almost two-thirds (65.0%) of those surveyed showed support for a new bridge crossing the river. There were no mode choice options provided for this bridge, with only 10.8% of respondents revealing no support for this bridge option.
5: South West Tunnel This river crossing was proposed as two parallel two-lane tunnels linking the Moggill Road and Western Motorway interchange with the Ipswich Motorway and Granard Road interchange as a bypass and orbital road for the south west of Brisbane Should a toll be charged on motorists to pay for this river crossing upgrade? Yes No The South-West Tunnel option received the second lowest level of support (48.7%) and a corresponding second highest level (20%) of respondents showing no support for construction of this option. When asked if a toll should be imposed on motorists to pay for this river crossing upgrade, almost half (46.9%) indicated it should, with 36.9% showing no support for this tunnel to be tolled.
6: East-West Link (TransApex) This river crossing was proposed as two parallel two-lane tunnels linking the Western Motorway and Toowong Village to the Pacific Motorway and O Keefe Street at Buranda as an orbital road for the inner south and west Should a toll be charged on motorists to pay for this river crossing upgrade? Yes No The East-West Link tunnel option received the 4 th lowest level of support (55.8%), ranking 8 th of 12 options proposed. This tunnel option recorded the third highest level (15.5%) of respondents indicating no support, just behind the South-West Tunnel option. Similarly to the South-West Tunnel, when asked if a toll should be imposed on motorists to pay for this river crossing upgrade, half (50.0%) indicated it should, with 35.6% showing no support for this tunnel to be tolled.
7: West End St Lucia This river crossing was proposed to connect Montague Road at Hill End with Guyatt Park and Macquarie Street at St Lucia In your opinion, should this bridge be used for This bridge option recorded the second highest levels of support (69.2%) of all the options considered. It received the lowest level of respondents opposing a bridge (6.2%), indicating that respondents believe that a bridge linking West End to St Lucia is worthwhile. Out of the seven bridge options where a mode choice question was asked, the West End St Lucia bridge option received the second lowest support (43.5%) for providing for all modes of transport. It received the highest (12.9%) support for Walk and Cycle only transport modes, and highest level of support for Walk, Cycle and Bus option (31.8%). This was the only bridge option to receive an overall higher support as an active transport and green (active and bus) bridge.
8: West End Toowong This river crossing connects Victoria Street at West End with Land Street at Toowong In your opinion, should this bridge be used for This bridge option recorded the fourth highest levels of support (65.8%) of all the options considered, with 9.6% indicating they did not support this bridge option. Out of seven bridge options where a mode choice question was asked, it received the 4 th highest support (55.1%) for walk, cycle and general lanes for all traffic (i.e., catering for all transport modes). 12.1% of respondents voted that this bridge should only be utilised for walking and cycling trips, which ranked it 3 rd out of 7 options.
9: Victoria Bridge This river crossing is a modification of the existing Victoria Bridge primarily to increase capacity for bus movements. The current Brisbane Metro proposal removes the two existing general use lanes so that the bridge becomes a green bridge only, catering for pedestrians, cyclists and buses. The new arrangement proposes four bus lanes and wider shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on the downstream side. To what extent do you support this change to Victoria Bridge? The Victoria Bridge option received the lowest level of support (45.3%) of all the proposals. Neutral responses were similar to other options (23.6%) meaning that the proposed changes to the bridge are not well received, with 31.1% indicating that they do not support, the highest level of opposition of the 12 main options tested. This result in not surprising considering it is removing a free river crossing for general traffic, rather than other options to provide new infrastructure.
10: Wilson Triple Jump This is a series of three bridges that link the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD) with Kangaroo Point, New Farm and Hawthorne. It is inspired by R Martin Wilson, Architectural Engineer and co-author of the original Cross River Report, commissioned by the state government with Brisbane City Council on its formation in Stage 1 is a bridge from the CBD Botanic Gardens (entry from Edward Street and exit on Alice Street) to Kangaroo Point north of St Vincent s Private Hospital (entry from Main Street northbound and grade-separated crossing of Story Bridge ramps). Stage 2 is a connecting bridge from Dockside ferry terminal or Cairns Street (exit to Main Street southbound and Shafston Avenue intersection) to Merthyr Road at New Farm and Riverwalk. Stage 3 is a bridge from the north-east end of Merthyr Road to the Hawthorne ferry terminal (entry and exit from Lindsay Street) In your opinion, should this bridge be used for This bridge option recorded the third highest levels of support (67.8%) of all the options considered. It also received the third lowest level of opposition (8.3%), indicating that respondents believe that these bridges are worthwhile. Out of the seven bridge options where a mode choice question was asked, the Wilson Triple Jump bridges option received the third lowest support (44.1%) for providing for all modes of transport. However 28% of respondents supported the Walk, Cycle and Bus option along with this proposal receiving the second highest (12.5%) support for Walk and Cycle only transport modes.
11: Bulimba to Teneriffe This river crossing connects Skyring Terrace or the Commercial Road ferry terminal at Newstead or Teneriffe with the Oxford Street ferry terminal at Bulimba. The bridge adds a link between the Bulimba peninsula and Newstead and the CBD via the Ann and Wickham Street corridors In your opinion, should this bridge be used for This proposed bridge option landed mid-pack (6 th from 12 options) for support (61.9%). There was 9.7% of respondents who indicated that they did not support this option. Out of the seven bridge options where a mode choice question was asked, the Bulimba to Teneriffe bridge option received the second lowest support (42.5%) for providing for all modes of transport. However 28.8% of respondents supported the Walk, Cycle and Bus option (2 nd highest) along with this proposal recording 10.4% support for Walk and Cycle only transport modes.
12: Hamilton to Balmoral This river crossing connects the Brett s Wharf ferry terminal upstream of the Cruise Ship terminal at Hamilton with the Apollo Road ferry terminal at Bulimba. The bridge adds a link between the Bulimba peninsula and Hamilton to connect with the upgraded Kingsford Smith Drive In your opinion, should this bridge be used for This bridge option ranked 7 th out of 12 for levels of support (60.5%). Eleven percent indicated that they did not support this bridge option. Out of 7 options where mode choice question was asked, this received the 2 nd highest support (59.5%) for for all traffic (i.e., catering for all transport modes). Only 7.7% of votes indicated that this bridge should only be utilised for walking and cycling trips with 12.8% revealing that Walk, cycle and bus was their preferred choice.
Use Level of support for bridge proposals: 03 Centenary Motorway Upgrade West End - St Lucia Wilson Triple Jump West End - Toowong 04 Walter Taylor Bridge 11 Bulimba - Teneriffe 12 Hamilton - Balmoral 01 Moggill Road Bridge 06 East-West Link Bellbowrie - River Hills South West Tunnel Victoria Bridge Level of support for mode choice: 01 Moggill Road Bridge Hamilton - Balmoral Bellbowrie - River Hills West End - Toowong 10 Wilson Triple Jump 07 West End - St Lucia Bulimba - Teneriffe
Additional bridges: For the additional bridges nominated in the survey, the highest level of support was shown for the CBD to Kangaroo Point Walk and Cycle bridge. This bridge proposal is almost identical in location to the Wilson Triple Jump (Stage 1) bridge (Bridge 10). There is a lack of active transport connectivity between Brisbane CBD and Kangaroo Point and other eastern suburbs from the southern side of the river.
