1 High Level Market Overview Global al crude stainless steel production Global crude stainless steel production for 2013 is expected to reach 37.8mt, a 4% increase compared to By far the bulk of the increased production will come from China, already the dominant global producer, with most other major production regions showing lower production volumes compared to the previous year. ABC Sector News Home Ideas Centre Gauteng In conjunction with the CHC Sector, the exhibition stand at the Home Ideas Centre in Edenvale has been expanded and revamped. Although the enlarged exhibition stand has been running since mid-2013, it was officially opened at a function at the centre on 14 November University Liaison One of the ABC Sector s major success stories for 2013 has been the increased liaison with architecture departments at universities and universities of technology. This forms a significant component of the ABC Sector s long term objective of equipping students, who will be making decisions on materials for use in architectural applications in the future, with a knowledge of stainless steel grades, finishes and applications. Over the past few months, presentations have been given to architecture students at Wits University, Pretoria University, UJ and CPUT, these being in addition to presentations given to other educational institutions earlier in the year.

2 The year culminated in Sassda s sponsorship of prizes for 3 rd year architectural students at UJ, for projects incorporating the best use of stainless steel in architecture. Entries were adjudicated by Dave Braithwaite, who commented on the high standard of the work submitted. Consumerware One of the major promotional initiatives covering stainless steel consumerware products, has been a series of live reads on Radio 702 and Cape Talk. These live reads commenced in May 2013 and were completed in the last week of November Whilst continuing to promote the benefits of locally manufactured consumerware products, the last series of live reads also referred to results of the pot testing investigation undertaken earlier this year, making specific reference to potentially misleading labelling on imported stainless steel hollowware. The other major promotional initiative covering stainless steel consumerware, was the Refresh, Renovate, Redecorate competition that was run in Garden & Home. Judging of entries has been completed and the winners will be announced in the next edition of Garden & Home, due to be published in mid-december Whilst there has been a lot of favourable comment regarding the above initiatives, particularly the live reads, Sassda plans to more quantitively measure their effect, with a market research investigation scheduled to commence shortly. Both the radio and print media initiatives have involved competitions of various types. A number of Sassda members provided prizes for these competitions. 3 Fabrication Sector Fabricator Data Base The Fabricator Data Base, now complete as a first phase, has proved to be a useful tool in describing (in a significant degree of detail) the capabilities of Sassda fabricators. Memory sticks with the complete data base were provided to potential designers/specifiers and end users at Africa Down Under and Mid-Est. The data base has also been provided to a number of South African end users, as well as to the dti as part of their investigation into industry development strategies. Applied vs Bound Import Tariff Rates Preliminary investigations have been completed to try to identify products (via the applicable HS code) where the applied import tariff rate is lower than the bound rate, the latter being the WTO approved rate which countries can automatically apply, if they choose. Member input has been requested to identify those product/hs codes where there may be substantive grounds to try motivate for an increase in the applied tariff rate to the bound rate, as a means of supporting the local stainless steel fabrication industry against imports. Import Sector The new Import Levy collection procedure came into effect for the June/July/August 2013 quarter. The total levy income for the quarter amounted to R (incl VAT), which represented 54% of the total leviable import tonnage. Much of what took place was visible (seminars, promotional activities, training activities routine and new, Import Levy collection system changes, African Trader initiative and many more), whilst some took place behind the scenes (such as the development of a new data base for the association). Although significant progress was made in most areas, disappointingly little was made in a few. Despite the challenges facing the local stainless steel industry (which are similar to most manufacturing industries in South Africa), the outlook for stainless steel in South Africa remains positive.
