2 A NOTE FROM CHRIS HECTOR Why should we be so excited about the next WEG? Because it is only the second World Equestrian Games to be held in a state-of-the-art purpose built equestrian centre (the other, of course, was Aachen, and we know how fantastic that was...) The Equestrian Centre at Tryon has already hosted top level dressage, showjumping and eventing (course designed by Captain Mark Phillips) and it should be the perfect venue... But! There's always a 'but' - accommodation in area is almost impossible to find. But Kerrie O'Dea from our travel partners, Organisation Unlimited, loves a challenge, and she has found the perfect resort / hotel just half an hour from the venue, and has secured every room for our tour group. Go Kerrie. Why travel with THM/OU? Because we have been running WEG tours since the first one in 1990, we know what to look out for, and how to make things work. We do our homework. Kerrie has visited Tryon twice putting the trip in place. We take care of all the fiddly details - like how to get to the venue, to the competition arena, and back each night to our resort. And with Kerrie, expect the unexpected, she always finds somewhere really unique for our WEG celebration dinner. Oh yes, you also get all the info we can snaffle from the press room. Start lists, results, and a happy hour debrief every day. When there is nothing happening at the WEG, there will be day trips organized. 3 Destination Overview North Carolina North Carolina is a treasure chest of historical towns, battlefields, and folksy mountain hamlets. But it s also one of the American south s most forward-thinking states, with modern cities like Charlotte and plenty of brain power in the Research Triangle towns of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The great thing about North Carolina is that it offers a taste of everything for travelers. Its east coast is lined with quiet beautiful beaches along the Outer Banks, while the western side of the state is nothing but rolling Appalachian Mountains and old-timey towns. In between, the relatively flat Piedmont region is a golfer s mecca and home to the state s main cities of note. Within a single trip you can easily enjoy the sea, the cities, and the mountains without much wasted travel time. 3 No matter where you go in North Carolina you re likely to be greeted with warmth and welcome. These are friendly people, who know they live in a very pretty part of America. Drop the diet to feast on Carolina barbecue and fresh seafood, washed down with a few pints from its impressive craft brewing scene. Tryon, North Carolina The quaint Village of Tryon is located on the first rise of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Tryon is known for its wonderful people, outdoor activities, mild climate, small town shops, great restaurants and a rich equestrian history. Typically, quirkiness is regarded as intangible, but in Tryon s case it is palpable. The friendly, offbeat personality is a big part of what makes Tryon special. This is a town of unexpected nooks teeming with a cast of characters that even Garrison Keillor would have had trouble imagining. It's a pretty amazing mix - quaint village on the first rise of the Blue Ridge Mountains - and state of the art equestrian centre! But you will find lots to enjoy in the cute village Tryon itself. Tryon is known for its hospitality, small town shops and great restaurants, here is a chance to sample real southern hospitality, to enjoy the rich cultural heritage of a charming town... Centrally positioned near the cities of Asheville & Charlotte (NC) and Spartanburg & Greenville (SC), Tryon is the perfect destination for an urbane experience in a small town setting. 3

We must confess that for a while we were looking just a bit desperate. Tryon has great equestrian facilities, but accommodation is going to be at a super premium - then we found it. 6 Optional Day Trip - Monday 17 th September The Blue Ridge Parkway Known as America s Favourite Drive, The Blue Ridge Parkway offers 469 miles connecting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia Stunning views, abundant hiking trails, picnic areas, campsites, and interpretative exhibits Ample recreational opportunities for all ages and abilities Natural beauty featuring one of the world s most diverse display of flora and fauna Outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most visited sections of the National Park System. Split-rail fences, old farmsteads, mountain meadows and scenic overlooks with endless vistas make the Blue Ridge Parkway a popular attraction. In September as the Fall commences the Parkway becomes a sea of colour with the rich Autumn tones and is one of the best months to visit the Parkway. The intensity of fall color and time of peak color vary and are determined by complex environmental factors, as well as the genetic makeup of the plants themselves. Today, with WEG on a rest day we will explore the Parkway and stop for lunch as a very scenic location! On the way back to THM Retreat we visit historic Hendersonville and take a guided tour of this quaint, charming mountain town. 6
