3 The Gingoog Sponsors of Trainees We started planning this tour several years ago, but only since it received the backing of The Rotary Club of Gingoog, and now with 3 sponsors, is it all coming together. With this cooperation we are trying our best to make it an especially successful tour with hopefully good long term results. We are arranging for social interaction and sightseeing with the sponsors in the free time. Maggie having been appointed Special District Representative is coordinating the overall planning. Jong & Juvie from GinPRA Gingoog Poverty Relief Action Robert De Lara The Rotary Club of Gingoog 26 Member Pres. Joan Militante-Bahian jdmilitante75@yahoo.com The Rotary Club of Gingoog Bay 32 Me SewAID and the RAWCS Project No / SewAID program This Philippines trip is the sixth Sewaid project after Indonesia, Mongolia, PNG and two to Vanuatu. Judy Davidson and Judy Jones have been previously. After the Philippines a team is going to Madagascar, Cambodia in March and to Vanuatu in May. Sewaid is managed by Tony Castley, retired CEO of Sewgroup, and sponsored principally by Sewgroup International, and supported by Janome, Bernina, Singer etc, as well as patterns, fabrics etc. from McCalls. We teach people to sew in third world countries, donate sewing machines etc. to other overseas aid groups and to Australia indigenous communities. Sewgroup is an Australian family owned group of businesses that produces a large number of sewing and craft products under the brands of Hemline, Klasse', SewEasy etc. which are sold Worldwide. In Australia, Sewgroup runs a large wholesale distribution company called SSS Pty. Ltd. and a chain of quilting and craft shops called Hobbysew with eight shops in NSW. Walter and I have been friends for years and have travelled together in remote Western China, Mongolia and Siberian Russia. SewAID accommodation is usually extremely basic, but from all reports Walter & Peter have organised some very comfortable accommodation and capped the cost at $1,500. Walter s excellent news letter is keeping you informed. The sewing side is organised by Sewaid and the team. Burwood Rotary bought 15 new machines but in total 34 machines, 3 overlockers and 1 Janome 9000 embroidery machine, fabric & accessories have been shipped. Each student receives 30 items. What is different about this particular Sewaid programme is that we are not just teaching basic sewing which is what we had done in all previous programmes except in Indonesia where we taught more advanced sewing. That group received a Government contract to make school uniforms and that is something we would like to also achieve in Gingoog. Class 1, 18 students, will be a semi advanced class to learn how to make these uniforms and also sewing techniques that could help them in the future do dressmaking for weddings and special occasions, alterations and repairs. Class 2, 12 students will be for beginners with possibly little or no previous sewing experience for basic training. Students are carefully selected by the local Rotary club. Students must be from a poor and needy background but considered capable of own initiative. Groups of 4 should preferably be from one community, making it easier for them to work together. Trainees must be punctual and attend all lessons for the full day without exception!!! At the start each trainee is given a new sewing machine and all accessories. At the end of the training they sit an exam. If they pass successfully, they are given the machine etc. to take home. Trainees repay monthly PP400 for three years - then the machine is theirs to keep Trainees will be paid P100 per day and get free lunch. SewAID is better than a regular Micro Loan, trainees pay back less than 25% and get the vital support of their sponsors Maggie and Jong on the Philippine side and the whole Australian SewAID team are determined to make this a SewAID mission to remember, we want our Filipino pupils to excel and to succeed in making a living after we leave. The success of SewAID is in the trainee selection process and the sponsor s after-support
