1 1270 km of new Urban Rail infrastructure put in revenue service in can again be considered very successful, with the opening for revenue service, on all continents, of 120 individual rail projects totalling 1270 km. The figures from UITP s rail project database also show that the year was marked by: A vigorous 31.5% increase compared to 2016 in both LRT (+27%) and metro (+33%), A consolidation of the Asian domination of the metro market, expectedly in China and India but also in Taiwan and Singapore/Malaysia, A significant (13.3%) part of new metros being operated/designed for Full Automated Operation (FAO / GOA4), A major change in the regional distribution of LRT projects, with Europe being for the first time outpaced by Asia-Pacific. North America, traditionally second in LRT development, was behind MENA and Latin America in terms of new projects opened in 2017.
2 Metro developments have continued to be the most robust in Asia-Pacific, heavily dominated by China. The MENA region comes second, with most systems being opened in Iran. This pattern has been stable for the past 4 years. 968 km of metro infrastructure were opened in 20 countries, with 72% of new lines and 28% of line extensions. Seven cities in China and India opened their 1 st metro line in 2017: Xiamen, Guiyan, Shijiazhuang, Yinchuan, Hyderabad, Kochi and Lucknow, bringing the total of metro cities to 176. The pace of opening has strongly increased compared to 2016: +35%. The geographical distribution is the following: km in Asia-Pacific (632.8 km of which are new lines); 49.8km in MENA (40 km of which are new lines); 32.8 in South America (15.3 new in Santiago, Line 6); 49.9 km in the rest of the world (of which only 5.9 km are new lines). New metro lines have been designed to run with fully automated operation (FAO / GOA4) in six cities covering km: Beijing, Santiago, Istanbul, Seoul, Kuala-Lumpur and Singapore. Another two cities (Hyderabad and New Delhi) have commissioned lines designed for GoA4 but during a first phase will be operated with drivers in GoA2 mode. This total to 129 km. GOA4 represents 13.3% of the metro infrastructure installed in If we exclude China, which is only starting this year with first Chinesedeveloped FAO metro (Beijing) and is disproportionately affecting the figures, GOA4 metros represent 36% of new metro infrastructure.
3 The five countries with the biggest metro developments in the last year are: The most remarkable cities are: Guangzhou (83.7 km), with 3 new lines totalling 70 km and extensions 1 ; Taipei (62 km); Zhengzhou (57.3 km); Wuhan (55km) and Shanghai (49.3 km). 1 This last set of openings brings Guangzhou metro to a total of 390 km, the third largest in China and 6th in the world, just behind New York.
4 For the first time, light rail developments have been more robust in Asia-Pacific than on any other continent. Asia is followed by Europe and MENA. For the first time North America, traditionally supported by LRT and streetcar developments in the USA, came behind all other continents, except for Eurasia. As announced last year, regions like Asia, MENA and South America are embracing the LRT concept and applying it as a complementary mode to traditional metros for a variety of urban scenarios. 301 km of LRT infrastructure were opened in 24 countries, with 68% of new lines and 26% of line extensions. The remaining 17.5km consist of conversion projects of underused secondary railway lines to LRT operation in Mexico. Some cities, or even countries, have opened their first modern LRT line in 2017: Granada, Shenzhen, Izmit, Izmir, Luxemburg, Aarhus and Taiwan, bringing the total of LRT cities to 403. The pace of opening has stabilised following slight decline in past years, mainly thanks to growth in non-traditional LRT regions. This trend is expected to continue in years to come. The geographical distribution is the following: 94.9 km in Asia-Pacific (84.8 km of which are new lines); 85.4 km in Europe (48.9km of which are new lines); 49.8km in South America (32.4 km of which are new lines); 45.3km in MENA (30km of which are new lines).
5 The five countries with the biggest LRT developments are the following: The most remarkable cities are: Wuhan in China, with two new lines totalling 51.8 km; La Puebla in Mexico with a tram-train conversion project (17.4 km); Denver, USA, Granada, Spain, and Sidi Bel Abbès in Algeria.
