The Committee has been vvorking tirelessly, so you can expeiience the best dance eveni ever. Decorations are looking great and are almost completed. the program is due to go to print and the website will soon be updated with the new accommodation guide and a local bus schedule. However, if you are still looking for a place to stay, please phone the Visitors Centre (toll free) on They have a current listing of available accommodation for the Queen's birthday weekend. The latest program and dressed-set figures are due to go on our website at the end of March. Visit to get the latest information and make contact with the Committee if you need any answers. Wodonga is situated on the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Many visitors to the area like to kayak on the Murray, others prefer to have a game of golf and there are plenty of sign posted walking and cycling trails. A drive to the summit of Huon Hill, has panoramic views and the Albury War Memorial is another lookout. The original Ettamogah Pub, modeled on the archetypically Aussie watering hole, created in the drawings of Ken Maynard is north of the city at Table Top. Thurgoona, also north, has the Kinross Woolshed, which serves as the area's top country-and-western venue, featuring big-name acts amid the shearing shed decor. Nearby Wonga wetlands, attracts abundant bird life and marsupials. What should not surprise is that this part of the country is rich in villages, proud of being steeped in history. Yackandandah, Beechworth, Chiltern and Corowa all have small museums and historical buildings. Is it any wonder Wodonga was chosen for this Convention? We know you will have a great time exploring the neighbourhood. Please remember to have fun, be happy and meet with your friends to share the enjoyment square dancing provides for us. Mary Beerens, Publicity Officer "LET'S MEET AGAIN, IN TWENTY TEN" Further details are available from

11 51st Australian National Square Dance Convention This is the last update before we all meet in Wodonga. Everything is more or less set to go. Nearly time to pack your bags and head over for the greatest show on earth " Under the Big Top". If you have not registered, you can download the reg istration form and you still have time to get your registration in and book accommodation. The Tour ist Information Centre can be contacted toll free on They have a listing of available accommodation, and are happy to assist you with late bookings. Home to around 90,000 people, The Wodonga Albury area is large enough to provide very varied holiday attractions and entertainment, but small enough for you to enjoy exploring on foot. And that Is certainly the best way to ap preciate its distinctive character, with grand old buildings, richly established gardens and broad tree lined streets. There are contrasts in nature too, with fine formal gardens such as the 1887 Albury Botanic Gardens, Wodonga's re 1axed Sumsion Gardens with a large lagoon and walking tracks, and Albury's Noreuil Park on the banks of the Murray River. The visual arts have impressive homes at Art Space Wodonga and the Albury Art Gallery. So it's time to set your travel intinery. There Is such a lot of things to do and see in Wodonga and the immediate area. Thus before you go, check out the activities section, on our website The Wodonga Sport and leisure Centre will provide the ideal venue for the Australian National Square Dance Convention with plenty of parking available. It Is situated next to Birallee Shopping Centre, which has lots of cafes and various shops. The tavern nearby, serves great meals. The business commu nity in Wodonga and Albury have been forthcoming with specials for the par ticipating dancers and welcome you all t o enjoy the Wodonga area. So please, come and join us from 10 th to 14th June and we promise you a great weekend of square and round dancing. Your registration packs should be arriving soon. Most of all we hope that you will leave us on Monday with great memories of this event for years to come. The committee have spent many hours anticipating the needs of dancers and should there be something that we have overlooked, please see anyone of our team who are easily identified with to Tags. 54 - Albury ~'s Ioc.aIIy 0Ymed free wediiy newspaper 900 da ers in for a fun time "SQUARES~ coming to Wodonga? No, but squal'e dancing is! Wodollga will host the 51st Australian National Square Dance Convention over this Queen's Birthday long weekend. Festivities commenced yesterday, June 10, and conclude on Monday, June 14. The venue will be the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre. Publicity officer Mary 8ee.rens outlined modern square dancing. "A caller sings a song to music, provided by II record, which includes directions to the dancers," she explained. "*1"he square in square dancing refers to the formation. M A1though the formation changes throughout the dance, it always starts and finishes in this square formation." TIle national committee expects about 8so to 900 dancers to come from all states of Australia, as well as some dancers from overseas. Ms Beerens said the convention, like most square dances, is an alcohol free event. "We are very friendly and we have II lot of good fun together," she said. "We invite Wodonga residents and other visitors to the area, to come and see us at the venue to enjoy this spectacular dance event." Generally square dancing is done in dubs throughout each state where the clubs provide a great social, fun and friendly atmosphere, as well as the dancing. Victoria holds its own State Convention each year. "Ho\\"eVt'r, this is an Australian National Convention. TIlese are also held annually and are usually rolaled belwccn the slates," Ms 8ee.rens said. "TIle convention is an opportunity for all square dancers in Australia, and some from overseas, to get together to enjoy the social and fun aspects of square dancing. ~It is also an opportunity for dancers from each state to meet and discuss the situation in their own state and maybe learn from each other. "There are no competitions and no trophies. We just dance and thoroughly enjoy ourselves." Special clothing is not required at club level, subject to the ruling of the individual club. ~Howe"er, at major functions, such as a coll\'ention, dancers are expected to dress to a suitable standard," Ms Beerens said. "'The ladies will usually wear a dress w;th full skirt or full skirt and blouse, while the men will usually wear long-sleeved shirts and neat trousers. "'The ladies' outfits are usually very colourful with frilly panties and petticoat under the skirt and the men often wear shirts to match their outfit. With footwear, the ma in requirement is that the ladies' heels are Convention In Perth. not a spike or small type that might damage the floor surface. ~ Ms Beerens said several factors were takcn into consideration when looking for a location to hold a convention. "We need to consider a number of factors such as a venue large enough for the dancers. sufficient accommodation establishments, a variety of bistros, restaurants, take-away food shops, etc and a town with a good selection of tourishype activities to attract visitors. ~We decided that Wodonga fulfilled our criteria. "We can be contacted by phoning our toll free numher n or visit our website il'ww.twentylo.net..u "Our slofan is "Let's meet again in twentylo and the theme for this National Square Dance Convcntion is "Under the Big Top- with a special dress-up night to be held on Sunday night."

It seems only yesterday that the idea of hosting the 50th National in Perth was but the dream of a handful of dancers, then that dream became a reality and now it is a very proud memory. THE VENUE The Loftus centre was the primary choice because of its central location and the fact that a number of functions had been held there in the past and we knew that the sound was of an acceptable standard for such an even!. The management then gave us their assurance that the refurbishment would be completed well in advance of the Convention and that we would be the first major booking to use the new facility. During the construction many committee members conducted drive by inspections to check on the progress of construction. Once the construction was completed to a stage we could have an actual inspection one major problem was immediately evident, the dividing wall between the two halls had a gap some 2 metres high and approx 30metres long which would have to be filled in order to avoid sound transfer. With true Square Dance ingenuity a polystyrene wall was constructed and trialled at the State Convention and it passed with flying colours. With this problem removed the venue proved to be well suited for the even!. As you will appreciate a venue of this size is and always will be a nightmare to decorate and so with the theme of Gold, Past, Present and Future, it was agreed that the majority of decorations would be placed at

68 the entrance rather than be lost in the vast expanse of the main hall. The Star ship which would take us on our future ques;t for our gold would then become the focal point in the hall and I am sure ;all would agree it was an impressive feature. SOUND All Conventions rely on sound to give the dancers an enjoyable experience and sound can make or break any dance especially one as large as a National. Our major goal was to provide good quality sound in both halls for the entire weekend through the use Hilton amps and Turntables coupled with Yak Stak Speakers. While there is other equipment out there it is not designed for square dancing and not available in such a compact form and so with help from the Lottery West the necessary equipment was purchased. The next obstacle was now that we halve the correct equipment how do we get good sound coverage to the floor? Contact was made with a source in NZ who had manufactured 2 large stands specifically for this purpose and we were able to purchase these from him and ship them over, Our Sound was complete and I am sure you will agree it was well above an acceptable standard. The two large stands have been donated by the 50th to all future nationals should they wish to use them and are now part of the convention box. FINANCES When the initial budget was formulated it was based on 800 dancers and also to make the Convention as affordable as possible to all dancers. We had a number of unexpected major expenses such as the dividing wall but with the support from the Square Dance Society of WA and the Lottery West we were able achieve a satisfactory outcome (See attached financial report)

69 The breakdown of registrations is as follows: Western Australia 346 Victoria 127 New South Wales 124 Hunter Valley 8 Queensland 127 South Australia 83 Australian Capital Territory 13 Tasmania 21 Overseas 57 Total 933 Refunds 27 Final Total 906 These numbers represent: Female Dancers 525 Male Dancers 408 We would like to thank all those dancers from WA and other States who gave of their time in some way over the course of the weekend to ensure the smooth running of the Convention and also our thanks to all the Callers and Cuers for their efforts and support but the big~,est thanks of all must go to the 906 dancers for coming and celebrating the 50th National in WA. Our sincere thanks. Richard, Heather and all the 50th Committee

This is due to the fact that all licenced premises in Darwin are not allowed to selve, or sell, alcohol after 11.59pm on Sundays. The venue that we have sourcod can cater the function as a private function but the cost per head wilt mean that fewer peopte than usual can be invited. in order to remain within our budget.
