Creating pathways

Whether travelling on two wheels or two feet, we help communities stay active and sustainable. Stantec is a local leader in providing cycleway expertise to clients throughout New Zealand. We provide a range of professional services including business cases, planning, design and engineering. Our recent integration with Stantec further enhances our capability with a comprehensive international track record in this area. Some of our most successful local projects have involved: Urban and State Highway projects Greenfield projects Universal design for disability standards Sustainable and innovative design. With a footprint of 14 local offices in New Zealand and seven in Australia, we are able to design cycleways and paths which can meet the needs of both small and large communities.

Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive shared path Auckland Transport & NZ Transport Agency Described by the NZ Herald as Auckland s most ambitious cycleway yet, this 7km off-road path caters for both pedestrians and cyclists and unlocks areas of spectacular scenery. The route has taken into account challenging terrain, complex engineering problems, consenting issues and several environmentally sensitive areas. Our professional services for this project includes scheme assessment, detail design and construction surveillance for the entire route. Section 1, now complete, comprises a four metre wide 1.4 km off-road path with two bridges, an earth reinforced ramp and hundreds of metres of retaining walls. Numerous workshops were run by Stantec to work closely with key project stakeholders and allowed the project to advance swiftly. We also handled the statutory approval and consenting process, including environmental, archaeological, visual, acoustic, stormwater and structural assessments. The robust consultation approach for Section 1 resulted in the design of a safe, high quality facility for users. The team s ability to meet tight timeframes on this complex project resulted in high levels of client satisfaction. This project was the winner of 2017, NZ Planning Institute, Rodney Davies Project Award. Quay Street Urban Cycleway Auckland Transport This project has involved the design of a two-way, 1km long urban cycle route along Auckland s CBD waterfront between Lower Hobson Street and Plummer Street. The $1.5m cycleway has a mix of on-road and offroad cycling improvements, and is a key part of the Auckland Cycling Network (ACN) connecting with three other urban cycleways. Our range of services for this project included the overall design of the cycleway, project management services with tight completion deadlines, and all statutory approvals. We assisted the client with consultation and stakeholder engagement, and prepared the physical works contract documentation. Preferred tender analysis was also undertaken, and technical support during the construction phase. Creating a two-way cycling facility in a highly constrained corridor on Auckland s high-profile waterfront was challenging. It is a busy urban arterial route with significant safety and operational issues. Stantec was able to deliver this complex project within tight timeframes, in a highly collaborative manner. This project is a finalist in two categories for the 2017 Bike to the Future Awards.

Franklin Road Upgrade, Auckland Auckland Transport This $6-8m project involves the upgrade of one of Auckland s most iconic streets to include Copenhagen style raised cycle lanes the first of their kind in Auckland. Franklin Road is a boulevard lined with historic London Plane trees. It is also a key arterial and over dimension route. These competing aspects create significant challenges, along with high levels of political, and stakeholder interest. Our team delivered a range of services for this project including consultation with stakeholders, preliminary and final detail design. We also prepared the construction phase design, as well as geotechnical assessments, pavement, drainage, geometric, landscaping and urban design. The physical works contract was also prepared with technical support during the construction phase. The developed scheme incorporates cycle lanes raised slightly above the road, separated from traffic by a rounded kerb, with buffer zones on both sides. It is a great example of what can be achieved in the most complex urban settings. Clive Bridge, Hastings NZ Transport Agency & Hastings District Council Clive Bridge is located midway between Napier and Hastings on SH2 and spans 150m across the Clive River. The bridge is part of the wider cycle network but also provides a key link for the community between Clive township and local parks and swimming pools. The existing cycle provision was deemed unsafe and unsuitable. Our innovative design solution included a three meter wide shared path separated from traffic by a cycle safe rail. The rails adopted are of a high urban design standard and include integral LED lighting creating a unique ambience along the path. The path itself is a lightweight plastic paver solution which is manufactured using four million recycled plastic bags to create a sustainable material. It is thought to be the first application on a bridge structure in New Zealand. This sustainable design diverted millions of plastic carrier bags from landfill to create an attractive and functional walking and cycling path for the community in Hawkes Bay. This project was a finalist in the 2016 IPWEA NZ Excellence Awards.

Amazing service and support from the team at Stantec. The result is a fantastic, fit for purpose shared path that has been well received and used by the communities it connects. Rebecca Wills Project Manager, Porirua City Council Christchurch Cycle Routes Christchurch City Council (CCC) & NZ Transport Agency The Christchurch City Council has committed to developing 13 major cycle routes across the city. Stantec has partnered with other consultants to form a multi-disciplinary team delivering all aspects of cycle routes, from route option identification, route assessment, planning, design and construction supervision. Specifically, we have been at the forefront of the consultation process, as well as programme management, risk and resource management, CAD, detail design, traffic engineering and options assessment. The first of the designed routes will start construction in August 2016 and the community response to the initiative has been positive. New and innovative approaches to route identification and safety assessment have emerged creating a new multi-criteria evaluation process. We worked with CCC as the technical lead for a Safety Audit and Network Functionality (SANF) review which looks at both safety and network impacts of the cycle facilities a process now adopted by the NZ Transport Agency for a yearlong trial in Christchurch City. Porirua Cycleway Porirua City Council The design for this new shared path was carefully designed to accommodate a number of challenging factors. The route runs along the top of a stop bank, adjacent to the main trunk railway line. Mesh fencing was required along the entire length to safely separate the path from the rail line before construction could start. Greater Wellington also had heavy vehicle requirements for the stop bank, and the path had to be constructed using 150mm thick 35Mpa concrete with substantial reinforcement. As part of the route design, we also managed to accommodate a key section where the path crossed under a proposed connection to Transmission Gully. Our experts worked closely with the client to manage the stakeholder consultation process. The level of engagement was substantial and key to the ultimate success of the project. This new shared path for Porirua opened in April 2016 and has been extremely well received by the community.

Model Communities iway Project Hastings District Council (HDC) Our team was engaged to complete a range of work to improve pedestrian, wheelchair, mobility scooter and cycling connectivity throughout the district. We worked within an extremely condensed timeframe to carry out the design, stakeholder consultation and contract preparation. More than 30km of collector roads now have cycling provision through dedicated cycle lanes, shared lanes on both the roads and footpaths, and off road tracks. In addition, investigations and detailed designs have been completed for improvements at a number of key intersections. Stantec has been incredibly responsive from the start and thought carefully about how to manage the competing needs of users, developing a number of innovative solutions, Owen Mata, HDC team leader, iway model communities. All timelines were achieved and the project was completed within budget. We are undertaking further work aimed at extending the already comprehensive iway network. Chesterhope Bridge Hastings District Council (HDC) Chesterhope bridge presented a significant barrier to walkers and cyclists on a main arterial road due to its narrow width. HDC were seeking a solution which would provide a safe off-road walking and cycling link. We completed the initial investigation and feasibility assessments to determine if a solution was achievable and fundable. The current bridge structure is unable to accommodate traditional steel and concrete type solutions due to limitations on loading. As a result, a lightweight solution which could span pier to pier was proposed. Our team worked closely with an Australian composite structures supplier to develop a lightweight solution which could be delivered within the project budget. The result is a 450m long clip on facility including all approach works delivered for less than $2.2M.

Winner Our iway Project won Best Cycling Promotion & Best Cycle Friendly Commitment by a Public Organisation at the 2012 Cycling Advisory Network (CAN) Awards.

SH88 Shared Path Dunedin NZ Transport Agency & Otago Regional Council We have had continuous involvement in the Dunedin to Port Chalmers cycle and walkway network for nearly a decade. This has included successfully managing the investigation, design and implementation of the Boat Harbour to Ravensbourne section of the cycleway, and subsequently the Ravensbourne to Maia section. We completed the SH88 Cycling and Walking Strategy in 2010 for the NZ Transport Agency, and were then engaged for the 2.1km shared path extension from Maia to St Leonards. Full design and construction monitoring services were delivered for the main trunk line railway corridor, traversing the historic railway alignment and two historically significant causeways. This required integration of the path with the two existing railway bridges. Our contribution to the project has included option investigation, stakeholder consultation, route survey, bridge and structural wall design. Tender documentation and evaluation was also provided by Stantec along with construction monitoring. We played a leading role in the creation of this 4.5km iconic public amenity for all Dunedin residents and visitors. SH1 Dunedin Separated Cycle Lanes DBC NZ Transport Agency This initiative provides fully separated cycling facilities through central Dunedin s SH1 between Queens Gardens and Pine Hill. The project involved the reallocation of existing road space to uni-directional, fully separated cycling facilities mid-block, along with various works at 25 signalled intersections and five un-signalled locations along the corridor. A key requirement was to ensure the level of service was not diminished for vehicle traffic which has been successfully achieved. Our team provided expertise for this project around option investigation, stakeholder consultation, detailed business case production, scheme design, and intersection modelling. In addition, services were provided in terms of reporting, economic evaluation and cost estimation. The business case process was key to this project s success to ensure a range of alternatives were explored. In addition, robust community consultation ensured that the resulting design takes into account feedback received for both users of the facility and businesses in the city. We were awarded the pre-implementation and implementation work as a result of high quality DBC work completed to date.

Calgary Cycle Tracks, Alberta, Canada City of Calgary In 2011, the City of Calgary engaged Stantec to develop a network of cycle tracks in the downtown area. Specifically, we prepared network planning, stakeholder and public engagement, approval processes, detailed design of all facilities, traffic analysis, construction, and construction administration efforts. As a result the new Calgary cycle tracks were designed to include separated cycle lanes, signage, modifications to traffic signals, more bicycle parking and maximum on-street car parking where possible. The City agreed to pilot an entire network of cycle tracks for 18 months, using temporary construction treatments. In June 2015, 5.5 kilometres of cycle track and one kilometre of shared street space was opened to Calgarians.
