1 CHAPTER ONE 18 th ASIAN GAMES JAKARTA PALEMBANG 2018 The 18 th Asian Games will be held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, from 18 August to 2 September It is the first time in the history of the Games that two cities will host the competition. This will be the second time Indonesia will host the Asian Games, Jakarta having been the host city of the 4 th Asian Games in Indonesia Overview Indonesia (officially the Republic of Indonesia), is a unitary sovereign state and country located in Southeast Asia, with some territories in Oceania. Situated between the Indian and Pacific oceans, it is the world s largest island country, with more than 17,000 islands stretching over 1,904,569 square kilometres. It has an estimated population of over 260 million people and is the world s fourth most populous country. The world s most populous island, Java, contains more than half of the country s population. Indonesia s republican form of government includes an elected legislature and president. The country is made of 34 provinces. Its capital is Jakarta, which is also the most populous city in Southeast Asia. The country shares land borders with Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and the eastern part of Malaysia; other neighbouring countries and territories include Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, Palau, and the Indian territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The country has abundant natural resources like oil and natural gas, tin, copper and gold. Agriculture mainly produces rice, palm oil, tea, coffee, cacao, medicinal plants, spices and rubber. Indonesia s major trading partners are Japan, the United States, China and the surrounding countries of Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. Indonesian history has been influenced by foreign powers drawn to its natural resources. Muslim traders and Sufi scholars brought the now-dominant Islam, whilst European powers brought Christianity and fought one another to monopolise trade in the Spice Islands of Maluku during the Age of Discovery. Before Indonesia secured its independence after World War II between 1945 and 1949, the country had lived through three and half centuries of Dutch colonialism. Starting from Amboina and Batavia, the Dutch rule stretched all through the archipelago, including Timor and Western New Guinea, with the Portuguese, French and British also controlling these regions at different times throughout its history. 18 th ASIAN GAMES JAKARTA PALEMBANG 2018 WBM1 Broadcast Information Manual 9

4 Host Cities Jakarta Located on the northwest coast of the world s most populous island of Java, Jakarta is a cosmopolitan city, and Indonesia s centre of economics, culture and politics, with a population of 10,075,310 (as of 2014). Jakarta s business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a higher standard of living, attract migrants from all over Indonesia and the world, making the city a melting pot of many communities and cultures. The city s planned infrastructure projects for the event include a light-rapid transit (LRT) network, a velodrome and an equestrian centre. The 5.8-kilometre LRT network will allow spectators of the Asiad to reach the Britama Sports Hall in North Jakarta, the equestrian centre in Pulomas and the velodrome in Rawamangun, both in East Jakarta. The velodrome s development will be monitored directly by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), and the equestrian venue will be an international-standard equestrian facility, certified as an Equine Disease free zone. The facility will be built on a 35-hectare plot of land. Palembang Palembang is the oldest city in Indonesia, as the earliest evidence of its existence dates from the 7th century. It is the second-largest city on Sumatra island (population of 1,708,413 people in 2014) and the capital city of the South Sumatra province. Palembang is located on the Musi River banks on the east coast of southern Sumatra. Palembang has some of the biggest arenas in South East Asia, but also support infrastructure, such as an international airport, hotels and railroads. Palembang has built a skybridge to connect the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport with a LRT terminal. In anticipation to the Asian Games, Palembang will build 20 new hotels, adding a total of 10,000 new hotel rooms to host athletes and sports ambassador during the games. Jakabaring Sriwijaya Stadium will also be renovated in preparation for the 18th Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018 to increase the capacity from 23,819 seats to 40,000 seats. 12 AG18_WBM1_C1_18th Asian Games.indd 12 18th ASIAN GAMES JAKARTA PALEMBANG 2018 WBM1 Broadcast Information Manual 02/11/ :08
