3 NSW The Blue Mountains Around 100 kilometres west of Sydney, New South Wales, is the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area one million hectares of sandstone cliffs, bushland, waterfalls and eucalypt forest. In amongst the sandstone outcrops and eucalypt forests you ll find great dining, luxury retreats, the world s steepest railway (the Zig Zag Railway) and a vibrant community of artists. You ll marvel at nature s majestic statements in the Blue Mountains. Pay homage to the Three Sisters from the Echo Point lookout at Katoomba, one of New South Wales most iconic landmarks. The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society. 6 Tasmania Freycinet National Park Sticking out into the sea on Tasmania's mild east coast is the rugged and beautiful Freycinet Peninsula. The park is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours from either Hobart or Launceston. Freycinet National Park consists of knuckles of granite mountains all but surrounded by azure bays and white sand beaches. The dramatic peaks of the Hazards welcome you as you enter the park. Freycinet is effectively two eroded blocks of granite - the Hazards and the Mt Graham/Mt Freycinet sections of the peninsula - joined by a sand isthmus. Freycinet is a great place to go bird watching. You may be lucky enough to see a white-bellied sea-eagle gliding overhead or large Australasian gannet diving for food. Freycinet National Park offers a wide variety of activities and wonderful opportunities to enjoy spectacular coastal scenery, colourful wildflowers and a variety of Tasmania's animal life. Take a walk to the pass overlooking the perfectly shaped Wineglass Bay, trek the entire length of the Freycinet Peninsula on a three day walk or try less strenuous activities like beach strolls, swimming or wildlife spotting. Located within the entrance to the park, the visitor centre introduces the natural and cultural heritage of this region through creative displays. Staff are on hand to help with your enquiries. The centre is open daily from 8am to 5pm November - April and 9am to 4pm May - October. Scenic drives Cape Tourville - The 6.4 kilometre sealed road to Cape Tourville leaves from the main road just after the Freycinet Lodge. From the carpark, take the short, boardwalked track around the cliff line to the lighthouse. Along this fenced track are sweeping views along the coast. The Friendly Beaches - Spectacular views and miles of unspoiled white sand beaches are the main features of The Friendly Beaches, which were added to the national park in The beaches can be reached via a signposted turnoff on the Coles Bay Road. We are upgrading facilities, which at present are only basic. Gravel roads lead to car parks overlooking the beaches at a couple of points. Some information signs point out interesting features and foot tracks lead to the beaches. Basic camping is permitted at Isaacs Point and Ridge Camp, though there is no fresh water. Isaacs Point also has pit toilets. Ranger led activities - During summer, rangers offer a variety of activities such as walks, talks and slide shows for both adults and children. Besides being lots of fun these are a great way to learn about our national parks, wildlife and heritage. Water activities - Sleepy Bay is a great place for snorkelling and diving, while Honeymoon Bay is a good sheltered area suitable for beginners. Spectacular rock pools occur at both of these locations, as well as at Ranger Creek, and are well worth a look. Please don't disturb the sea creatures as they are fragile. 7 Northern Territory Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (Ayers Rock) You ll find Uluru and Kata Tjuta about 450 kilometres, or a four and a half hour drive from Alice Springs, the nearest major town. Though in a remote desert, a nearby town Yulara has been built to provide accommodation, restaurants, a supermarket, petrol and other essential services. See Uluru rise 348 metres from the desert in the deep centre of Australia, matching the light and weather with hues so vivid they upstage the sunset. Walk around Uluru s base with an Anangu guide, and learn how it was created by spirit ancestors in the Dreamtime. You can even trace the battle scars left behind. See Uluru on a motorcycle, from the back of a camel or on a scenic helicopter flight. Drink in its sunset glow with a glass of champagne, then return to a campfire dinner of barramundi, emu or kangaroo underneath a starlit sky. Just 40 kilometres away you ll find Kata Tjuta - steep, rounded, russet domes formed through more than 500 million years of erosion. You can experience both wonders in Uluru- Kata Tjuta National Park, which offers tours by Aboriginal guides and accommodation from campsites to luxury resorts. The best time to visit Australia s Red Centre, Uluru and Kata Tjuta is between May and September. The weather is cooler, making it easier and safer to walk. At this time of year, the colours of the rock are more vibrant and you are more likely to see the hidden surprises of Uluru - waterfalls, plants and animals. In summer (December, January, February) the weather is extremely warm, with temperatures often over 36 degrees Celsius. We strongly recommend people who come to the park during this period walk only in the early morning before am and carry plenty of water with them. Watching the colours change over this amazing landscape is a breath-taking experience. There are two special viewing areas to see Uluru at either dawn or dusk. Visit the Cultural Centre - The best place to start your journey. Learn about Anangu culture: see Anangu art, hear Anangu stories, and discover their connection with country. The Cultural Centre is also the spot to pick up your visitor guide, take a break at the café and meet some local artists at the two arts centres. Walk around the base of Uluru - This 10.6 km loop walk is a wonderful way to discover the amazing textures and colours of the rock, see the diverse plants and animals and experience Anangu culture first hand. Talinguru Nyakunytjaku - Our place to look from the sand dunes. This beautiful spot lets you see stunning views of Uluru and Kata Tjuta at sunrise and sunset. 9 Western Australia Ningaloo Marine Park Webpage Excerpts for use for Assessments for The Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage Site located in the north west coastal region of Western Australia. The 705,015 hectare heritage listed area is located approximately 1,200 kilometres north of Perth, along the East Indian Ocean. The distinctive Ningaloo Reef that fringes the Ningaloo Coast is 260 kilometres long and is Australia's largest fringing coral reef. On Western Australia s Coral Coast, between Exmouth and Coral Bay. Dive the Ningaloo Marine Park, which protects a 260km fringing reef off Western Australia s mid north coast. Snorkel through coral lagoons in Coral Bay, swim with the huge whale shark, and 4WD red sand dunes in Cape Range National Park. The Indian Ocean Drive from Perth links Ningaloo with Shark Bay and the dolphins of Monkey Mia. Swim with the docile whale sharks, the world s largest fish, who visit between April and June. Watch humpback whales between June and November and see rare turtle species hatch on guided, eco-interactive trails in January and February. Sea kayak from Exmouth and spot migrating whales and visit remote sites teeming with dugongs and turtles. Or join a boat tour to watch the spectacular mass coral spawning in March and April. More experienced divers can discover the diverse collection of large sponges, gorgonians and sea whips in the sponge gardens at the entrance to the Exmouth Gulf. Whatever level you are, Ningaloo has a piece of underwater Eden for you. Join a day tour to the tranquil Muiron Islands, classic desert islands with tropical waters teeming with marine life and complex coral reefs.
