1 Conservation Volunteer Activities December Nelson -/ January Tasman 2018 Top of the South Welcome to the December - January conservation volunteer activities newsletter for the top of the South Island. Merry Christmas and thanks very much! The DOC team in the Top of the South Island would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and all the best for We hope you have a wonderful Christmas break and find some time to get out and about in our beautiful parks and reserves. Thanks to all of you that have volunteered your time this year and to all those people volunteering over the Christmas and New Year period as camp hosts and hut wardens, we couldn t do it without you! We hope you enjoy seeing all the great conservation work going on around your community and are inspired to participate and support these activities to grow conservation. There is something for everyone from skilled, high fitness activities, to social and educational events, to days you can bring the whole family. You can camp host at Kerr Bay in your campervan or at West Bay where a small cabin is provided. If you are keen to bring your dog or enjoy mountain biking, you can camp host at Teetotal Recreational area. For more info see below. Come and join the Battle for the Banded Rail Project to survey fernbirds in the Waimea estuary in January. You will learn how to listen out for these secretive wetland birds. For more information see below. Volunteer camp hosts are needed for the beautiful Camp Bay and Cowshed Bay campsites in Queen Charlotte Sound over the summer period. If you d like to get away from it all while helping campers to enjoy their stay, this could be the volunteer position for you. Please see below for more details. 2 December, 2017 Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust Location: Abel Tasman National Park Supplemental feeding for kaka Contact: Abby Butler Phone: Dec Jan 18 Contact: Rosemary Vander Lee rvanderlee@doc.govt.nz Phone: The Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust checks a network of predator traps in the southern part of the Abel Tasman National Park twice a month. We have opportunities for those looking for a low impact outing through to those looking for a challenge. We are also involved in several habitat restoration projects. Please get in contact to find out more details about the Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust and our volunteer opportunities. Photo credit: D Wilson. An inquisitive South Island Robin on Adele Island. The kaka at the Wainui aviary have been released, we need volunteers to provide supplemental food outside the aviary as this helps anchor the birds to the area. Tasks include walking to the aviary (approx. 50 mins from Canaan Cottage), topping up food and attending to the kaka feeder outside the aviary, monitoring the amount of food eaten by kaka and engaging with visitors to the hut and aviary. Location: Wainui Hut, Abel Tasman National Park Otuwhero Wetland Working Bees Location: Marahau Contact: Terry Stanbridge Phone: Time: 1pm to 4pm The Otuwhero Trust are carrying out restoration work in the beautiful Otuwhero wetland near Marahau. Come and enjoy good company and birdsong and learn about this little known treasure at the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. The Otuwhero Wetland is a stronghold for banded rail and fernbird, hosts an important whitebait spawning area and has a number of threatened species of plants. Working bees are every Friday afternoon, 1pm to 4pm, meet at the end of Otuwhero Valley Road. Work includes planting, plant maintenance and opportunities to assist with trap line maintenance. Do you want to take your dog on holiday? Be a camp host at Teetotal Recreation Area, 1.2 km west of St Arnaud. The campsite is basic with toilets and a good water supply, and it is outside the Nelson Lakes National Park so dogs are welcome. You ll need your own campervan. You ll have all day to ride your mountain bike on the wonderful Teetotal MTB tracks, or walk your dog. Duties are to check in campers arriving after 4:30pm. We have EFTPOS, so there is little cashhandling. We have various dates for you to choose from, contact Gabriella for more details. nelsonlakesvolunteers@doc.govt.nz Do you want to be a camp host but don t have a campervan? We are offering a simple, furnished cabin for people who want to be part of this well-known summer camp host programme. Campervan owners are welcome to apply as well, free powered campsite supplied. Enjoy the lake views, bush surroundings and easy access to Lake Rotoiti during the day. Check in campers after 4:30pm. We have EFTPOS, so there is little cash-handling. We have various dates for you to choose from, contact Gabriella for more details. nelsonlakesvolunteers@doc.govt.nz You can help campers have a relaxing break beside beautiful Lake Rotoiti. We are looking for camp hosts with great people skills. You ll need a campervan (no more than 7m). Your day is free to discover the walks and wildlife in Nelson Lakes National Park. Cooking amenities are available and you will be supplied with a free powered campsite. Duties are to check in campers after 4:30pm. We have EFTPOS, so there is little cash-handling. We have various dates for you to choose from, contact Gabriella for more details. nelsonlakesvolunteers@doc.govt.nz Some of our regular volunteers are going to be taking a well-earned break over the next year, so we re looking for some relievers to check traps along parts of the Nelson Boulder Bank. You ll get to accompany the existing volunteer(s) before going solo, and it s not especially onerous just a couple of hours a month, with a nice walk along the Boulder Bank thrown in! Help to improve everyone s enjoyment in the outdoors and give our native biodiversity a helping hand this summer by killing wasps through the Wasp Wipeout programme. We are looking for volunteers to help with wasp baiting in some of the Nelson/ Tasman s most amazing places, from the Brook Sanctuary in Nelson to backcountry tracks in Kahurangi National Park. We are also interested in hearing from communities who would like to conduct wasp control in new locations throughout the area. We have two trips available - 16 to 30 January and the 13 to 27 February You will be required to do 2-3 hours of work per day - cleaning toilets, picking up rubbish and talking to campers. Come and join the Battle for the Banded Rail Project to survey fernbirds in the Waimea estuary on the 25th and 26th of January and then again on the 30th and 31st January. The survey will take up to 4 days (3-4 hrs each day) depending on weather conditions and numbers of volunteers available. Times will vary depending on the tides. If you are only available for a few of these days, please still make contact if you are able to help. This is an audio playback survey so the ability to recognise the fernbird call (after some training and practice) is necessary. /news/social-media/

Horoirangi Marine Reserve, Cable Bay, Nelson A free event. Saturday 17 February (postponement date 24 Feb). Tonga Island Marine Reserve, Abel Tasman National Park. $20 per person for boat. Come have a look beneath the surface and experience marine life first hand. Ages 5 plus, no previous snorkel experience necessary. Equipment and guide provided. Organised by Experiencing Marine Reserves. Contact Jude Heath for more details and how to book. An evening talk by Dr Andy Hamilton. Andy will present a colourful selection of photos and short films detailing the fascinating, bizarre and often outrageous inhabitants of muck dive sites in Bali and North Sulawesi in Indonesia. Muck diving gets its name from the sediment that lies at the bottom of many dive sites - a frequently muddy or "mucky" environment. The term was first used to describe diving off the beaches made up of black sand in Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea - the "muck" substrate can be the habitat for unusual, exotic and juvenile organisms that make their homes in the sediment that compose a muck dive. Volunteer camp host/s are needed for the beautiful Cowshed Bay campsite in Queen Charlotte Sound. You will be required to do 2-3 hours of work per day - cleaning toilets, picking up rubbish and talking to campers. This is a motorhome friendly campground A $50 food reimbursement is supplied, return boat trip and free camping provided. There are various dates to choose from.
