1 Police Sport Newsletter One 2018 Welcome to I hope the Festive Season treated you all well! A special welcome to all the Recruits currently going through their paces at the RNZPC. It will be worth it once you have graduated! There has been plenty happening recently and we have plenty planned for The NZPA Winter Tournament is planned for Christchurch August. Get your leave forms in. AP & ES Games this year are in Mandurah (about an hour South of Perth WA, in a region with similarities to the Sunshine Coast). Dates: 28 Oct - 3 Nov, so get planning! To the many of you who are in the final stages of training for the New Zealand Ironman, readying yourself for the Wellington Auckland cycle challenge, into preseason work for the winter season, heading toward the business end of summer sports, embarking on your own personal goals for this year good luck and enjoy! You may have also noticed in the Police Association magazine the strengthening of our relationship. AP & ES Games 2018 The 2018 AP & ES Games will be held in Mandurah, an hour South of Perth from Sunday 28 October to Saturday 3 November Our Winter Games is now firmly on the Police Sport Calendar. The 2018 event is to be held in Christchurch from Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 AUGUST. Planning is well underway and more information will be available in the next few weeks, but get your teams together, book your leave and get ready for what is always a fantastic event. Sports involved: Rugby Netball Football Golf Indoor cricket CrossFit Squash Volleyball Police Sport, will once again be providing some support for all Police Sport members who travel. Details of exactly what this will look like will be out in the next month or two. There is plenty of information available by simple following the links list below. Only an hour south of Perth, the Peel Region offers everything from beautiful coastlines to Jarrah forests, all within a short drive.

3 This diverse region is Perth s natural adventure playground made up of the City of Mandurah, and surrounding Shires of Serpentine Jarrahdale, Murray, Waroona and Boddington. The experiences range from fun at the coast to experiences in the bush. Zip along the estuary or take to the open ocean on a jet ski, go fishing, board a dolphin cruise, tee off at world-class golf courses, go mountain biking or hiking through Jarrah forests, treetop climbing or wine tasting. The opportunities are endless. Meaning meeting place of the heart, Mandurah was originally known as Mandjoogoordap and is a dream location for people who love being on, in or near the water. Western Australia s fastest growing regional city enjoys some of the most spectacular waterways in the country, often compared to a modern Venice and is known for its natural beauty, pristine beaches, blue manna crabs and wild dolphins. The Peel-Harvey Estuary, Mandurah s jewel in the crown, is twice the size of Sydney Harbour and ideal for canoeing, kayaking, jet-skiing, boating, houseboating, dolphin cruises, fishing and crabbing. You ll also love discovering amazing adventures of the palate all over this tasty region. Enjoy dining with a view at Mandurah s waterfront cafés and award-winning restaurants along the Eastern Foreshore and at Dolphin Quay or head out into the countryside to find fantastic wineries, breweries and genuine local produce. With plenty of accommodation options on offer Mandurah is the perfect place to base yourself and take daytrips out to explore the region and its nature-based attractions. The Murray area, with its historic towns Pinjarra and Dwellingup, is a wonderland of natural attractions and heritage sites. Enjoy native wildlife and reconnect with nature at the 50,000 hectares Lane Poole Reserve near Dwellingup. There s also an extensive network of bushwalking tracks along the Murray River and numerous opportunities for mountain biking, swimming, fishing and canoeing with hire equipment and organised tours available in Dwellingup. Dwellingup is where trails meet. Traversing 1,000 kilometres, the Bibbulmun Track meanders through towering jarrah and marri forests of Dwellingup. Follow the triangular markers symbolising the Waugal, the rainbow serpent of Aboriginal dreaming. Or check out the Munda Biddi Trail, meaning path through the forest, and enjoy over 1,000 kilometres of cycling heaven. As well as passing through magnificent Lane Poole Reserve with its swimming, camping and canoeing opportunities, the trail also takes cyclists through the historic timber towns of Jarrahdale and Dwellingup in the Peel Region. The Baldwin s Bluff Nature Track at Serpentine Falls National Park requires hikers to be reasonably fit as it climbs up gravel tracks to Baldwin s Bluff. You will pass through jarrah and marri woodlands, eventually coming to wandoo woodland and then finally over exposed granite. But it s worth the effort. When you get up to the top, you will enjoy a view to die for. From September to November wildflower hunters can find incredible colour and variety across the region on bush walks through Jarrahdale and Serpentine National Park, around Oakley Dam in Dwellingup and the coastal areas of Yalgorup National Park which is home to the ancient thrombolite reef. These circular rock-like formation provide a window into what our world looked like hundreds of millions of years ago. About 50 kilometres east of Dwellingup, you find Boddington. Half of the shire is state forest and the area is popular for camping and fishing and ideal for hiking, picnics and bird-watching. Enjoy a picnic by the Hotham River and soak up the view.

4 About 35 kilometres south-west of Dwellingup, Lake Navarino, also known as Waroona Dam, in the town of Waroona is a popular spot for bush walking, mountain biking, 4WDing and camping. On 27 November 2017, the North Canterbury Police again hosted the New Zealand Police Association South Island Police Touch Tournament. The competition was held at the grounds of the Woodend Rugby Club. The weather was again perfect and the grounds were in great condition. Dogs were victorious beating a depleted Lower Hutt side who lost players to earthquake duties. CIB came 3 rd beating the Chch Authorised Officers. This year saw the inclusion of a women s team who came 5 th. Chch prosecutions came 6 th and North Canterbury won the Division two trophy. There were 8 teams in total, including Christchurch Corrections who were challenging for the inter-services trophy. The challenge was held at the end of the round robin matches when they faced a very skilled composite police team lead by Donny Aitken. Police won the trophy comfortably with a very polished performance. The organiser, Tony Maw said that everyone enjoyed themselves and the competition was again played in great spirit. Taupo Cycle Challenge Every year we have a large number of people compete in the Taupo Cycle Challenge Special mention must be made of John Nelson (Auckland DSO), who completed the Maxi Enduro, which for those of you who don t know is a mere 4 times round the Lake, or 640km!! And just for good measure he won his age group!

Whanganui s Diane Limbrey has reopened the record books during a weekend in Hong Kong refeering at the Asian Judo Open. Limbrey was also there to sit her International Judo Federation (IJF) International A refereeing licence which she passed. "I become just the 13th New Zealander to gain the grade and only the third female," Limbrey said on return home. "The last time the grade was achieved by a Kiwi female was 30 years ago in 1987, while only three males have achieved it this century The IJF A referee licence means Limbrey is eligible to be selected to referee at the prestigious Grand Prix and Grand Slam competitions as well as World Championships and the Olympics.
