5 AL INFORMATION ABOUT THE Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland, with a metropolitan population of 2.3 million, making it the third-largest city in Australia. The city is situated along the Brisbane River, and its eastern suburbs line the shores of Moreton Bay. The greater Brisbane region is on the coastal plain east of the Great Dividing Range. Brisbane s metropolitan area sprawls from Caboolture in the north to Beenleigh in the south, and across to Ipswich in the south west. THE CITY IS SITUATED ALONG THE BRISBANE RIVER AND ITS EASTERN SUBURBS LINE THE SHORES OF MORETON BAY. 7 AL INFORMATION ABOUT THE The Gold Coast is a coastal city in south-east Queensland on the east coast of Australia. It is the second most populous city in the state with a population of 591,000. Located only one hour from Sydney by air and just 45 minutes from Brisbane by road, students from all around the world choose to live, work and study on the Gold Coast. Townsville is the region s unofficial capital, and is a major port for mining and agriculture exports. Cairns is the gateway to one of Australia s biggest tourist destinations, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Whitsundays offer year-round access to stunning island getaways. With more than 242,000 residents, North Queensland s population makes up just over five per cent of Queensland s total population. 12 SKILLSTECH THE TRADE EDGE ES: ACACIA RIDGE, BRACKEN RIDGE AND EAGLE FARM SINCE I WAS A KID I ALWAYS LIKED CARS. MY FAVOURITE THING I VE LEARNT IS ENGINES. ENGINES ARE LIKE THE HEARTS OF CARS; THEY ARE VERY COMPLICATED AND PRECISE. I REALLY LIKE THE PRACTICAL STUFF. GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO PRACTICAL PLACEMENT IN A REAL WORKSHOP. AS A STUDENT HERE, YOU GET TO DO LOTS OF REALLY GREAT THINGS RATHER THAN JUST SITTING INSIDE READING BOOKS. HAS A REALLY GOOD REPUTATION. I HEARD FROM A LOT OF PEOPLE IT HAS THE BEST EDUCATION FOR AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING. THE FACILITIES ARE CLEAN AND NEW AND THEY MAINTAIN THEM REALLY WELL. BRISBANE IS A PEACEFUL PLACE. YOUR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICER (ISSO) CAN HELP YOU FIND THE BEST OPTION FOR YOUR NEEDS PUBLIC HOLIDAYS Queensland campuses will be closed for all national public holidays and for two weeks over Christmas. Regionally, there are additional public holidays to enjoy. New Year s Day 1 January 2016 Australia Day 26 January 2016 Good Friday 3 April 2016 Easter Monday 6 April 2016 ANZAC Day 25 April 2016 Queen s Birthday 8 June 2016 Labour Day 5 October 2016 Christmas break 15 December January 2017 If dependent children accompany you to Australia, you must enrol them in school. LOOKING AFTER YOUR HEALTH The Australian Government requires that all international students in Australia maintain medical cover through an approved Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) provider for the full period of their student visa. Your OSHC will help to pay for any medical or hospital care you may need while studying in Australia. It also contributes towards the costs of most prescription medicines and ambulance expenses in case of an emergency. Queensland can organise this on your behalf or you may choose your own health care organisation. If you need medical help in Australia, you should go to a doctor s surgery that can send the bill directly to your OSHC insurance provider. 33

ORIENTATION A COMPREHENSIVE ORIENTATION TO THE AND YOUR CHOSEN TAKES PLACE BEFORE STUDY COMMENCES EACH SEMESTER. You will receive information about living in Queensland including sun safety, legal matters, beach awareness, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) medical insurance. Attendance to your orientation is compulsory. Orientation date details will be outlined in your Letter of Offer. Your teacher will give you your class timetable on the first day of your course. Classes may be scheduled three to five days per week (Monday to Friday) and some students may have to attend evening classes.
