Credit to Neil Adcock Gumeracha Morialta Matters News from John Gardner MP Issue 23 Autumn 2017 Mail or visit: 163 St Bernards Rd Rostrevor SA 5073 Office Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00am pm Phone: (08) morialta@parliament.sa.gov.au Website: /JohnGardnerMP John Gardner MP Member for Morialta Shadow Minister for Education Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs Shadow Minister for the Arts Manager of Opposition Business Dear Resident People across South Australia have been hit hard by the double-whammy of high power prices and poor reliability. Residents have suffered too many blackouts and many local businesses are now finding they need to spend tens of thousands of dollars buying back-up generators because their costs if they lose supply are much greater. It didn t have to be this way. Queensland s entire power supply didn t go out during their recent catastrophic storms. And our consumers look with envy across the border at the lower prices in Victoria where supply is also privatised. Everyone recognises that our energy future is going to be based on new technologies and clean energy. The problem is that in the State Labor Government s haste to get there, they have messed up the transition they have pursued too much intermittent, unreliable supply, without first securing baseload power. The Premier s new plan is a half billion dollar bandaid to cover the government s own mistakes and to make matters worse they are spending more than half a million dollars of your money to tell you about it. Along with the state Liberal team, I support: - Certainty: co-operating with other governments to manage the transition to a lower carbon economy, including a single agreed renewable energy target for the nation - Reliability: more operating baseload and deliver-on-demand electricity to strengthen the stability and security of the network more gas supply from the Cooper Basin to support electricity generation - Storage: accelerating the development of storage technologies for renewable energy - Demand management: to give consumers choices to better manage their demand for their own benefit - Competition: improving competition in the retail electricity market - National Electricity Market: improving the Market s operation for the benefit of consumers. Throughout this year, we will continue to announce firm commitments that will achieve these aims and secure our energy future. John
MORIALTA Talking in the Parliament about Labor s failures in Child Protection Catch me on YouTube! With the relaxation of filming rules in the House of Assembly, some of my speeches are now available through my Youtube channel. It s also a great way to share some of the activities I am doing in the electorate and in my portfolio areas. If you re interested in checking it out, it is available at You can also find me on other social media sites Highbury Primary School Traffic Issues Nearly 600 local residents in the Highbury area recently signed a petition seeking improved road safety measures around Highbury Primary School and Preschool. Hundreds of students walk to school daily, Receiving the petition from Abraham including many who have to cross busy roads such as Shuken and members of the Highbury Primary School community Lower North East and Valley. The petition calls on the Government to look at introducing safer crossing spaces across Lower North East (and I welcome support from the Tea Tree Gully Council for a pedestrian refuge, at least, in this area) and Valley, along with improved road signage, road markings and student crossings on the roads immediately surrounding the school. I was pleased to raise these concerns, speaking in the Parliament, and I will continue to lobby the Department to take action in this area. Birdwood Farm Day! Join the Birdwood Primary School community on Sunday the 21st of May in a day of fun for the whole family at the 43rd annual Birdwood Farm Day. Entry is only $8 for Adults, with a maximum of $15 per car. Children get in free! There will be CFS demonstrations, an animal nursery, live music, vintage cars and games for the whole family. It all starts at 10am at Chalks camp-ground, Mount Crawford Forest. For more information visit their website at; com or alternatively find them on Facebook. I hope to see you there!

The Arthouse also holds a number of workshops and art sales, along with children s painting sessions and a small market. From May until August the Arthouse will present a series of engaging talks by four artists over four months. Head along to as many sessions as you like to hear all about the creative process from the perspective of four interesting artists. RSVP ($5 entry) is essential via ; asharley@campbelltown.sa.gov. au or telephone on; For more information visit the Campbelltown Arthouse website at; It was terrific to join volunteers of the Montacute CFS to inspect final plans for their new station recently. This has been sought by the Montacute CFS since It was promised by the State Government in 2009 for completion in 2010 but they were unable to deliver on this promise. The new station is finally set to be completed on 29 December 2017, seven years after it was promised. The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in half the time this station has taken! The Montacute CFS Brigade and myself are thrilled to be on the downhill now and I will continue to monitor the process to see the timely delivery of the station! Inspecting plans for the new Montacute CFS Station Good to see my Dad Tony who was one of the many Rotary club volunteers Rotary Volunteers Marshalling Adelaide Festival I would like to extend my congratulations to the Rotary Clubs of Morialta, Campbelltown and Magill Sunrise for their initiative and enterprise during the recent Adelaide Festival. State Theatre s extraordinary production of Secret River broke box office records in the unique setting of the Anstey s Hill Quarry, but it wouldn t have worked without the efforts of dozens of local Rotarians who ran the car park smoothly and efficiently. The volunteers earned the thanks of Festival organisers, and also managed to raise tens of thousands of dollars for local Rotary projects.
STATE The proposed rail and road corridor heading to the freight airport near Monarto South Australian Financial Counsellors Association (SAFCA) Do you find yourself under financial pressure? SAFCA provides financial services that are free, independent, and non-judgemental. They offer services to assist in various issues including budgeting and money plans, and personal loans and credit cards. SAFCA can speak with your creditors on your behalf and negotiate lower payments if possible. Contact them on or visit their website safca.org.au for more info. Globelink In January State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall announced our support for a proposal for a new heavy freight corridor along with a 24-hour freight-only airport based in Monarto. The proposal will not only boost South Australia s exports, but will also take trucks off busy suburban roads by providing freight with a non-stop direct corridor from Port Adelaide to the proposed airport in Monarto, bypassing any stoppage signs or traffic lights. South Australia s share of national merchandise exports has shrunk from 7.3% to 4.3% over the past 15 years. It is important that we grow our exports and provide local suppliers with the infrastructure to do so. Now it is more important than ever that we invest in export infrastructure as more countries are choosing to buy Australian-made goods. For more information on the proposal by Steven Marshall, visit the website; There you will have an opportunity to have your say and learn more about the project. SA Power Networks Guaranteed Service Levy Payment Hudson Pear Cactus (White Spined) An estimated 155,000 people lost power during the December blackouts which saw residents from the eastern suburbs and Adelaide Hills hit hard. More than 12,000 households were left without power for over 12 hours. This was a major concern for all South Australians, in particular residents living in our area, who faced major delays in receiving assistance from SA Power Networks due to the weather. If you were left without power for longer than twelve hours and have not already received a Guaranteed Service Level payment from SA Power Networks I urge you to contact them on Alternatively, visit their website to fill out an application form to receive the GSL payment. Please don t hesitate to let me know if you have any trouble and I would be happy to follow it up with SA Power Networks and, if necessary, the relevant Government Department. Hudson Pear Cactus can limit access and impact on human and animal health. It can degrade grazing land and contaminate wool. This invasive weed has been ranked as high risk by Biosecurity SA. Despite being declared and prohibited for sale, there have been reports of private sales. If you see any of these weeds, either for sale or in the wild, please notify the Natural Resource Centre (Black Hill) on The Hudson White Spined Pear Cactus
O RI AL TA Rostrevor Tennis Club: M 2016 Australian Tennis Awards Congratulations to the Rostrevor Tennis Club for being shortlisted as a finalist for Most Outstanding Club at the 2016 Australian Tennis Awards. Being recognised as one of the top tennis clubs in Australia is a huge Volunteers of the Rostrevor Tennis Club at the award ceremony in Melbourne achievement and a credit to all the work put in by players, coaches and parents.
