Its historic centre was inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites as the first of its kind in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region, the city dates back to the 7th century. It has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural and artistic life and is one of Poland s most important economic centres. It was the capital of Poland from 1038 to The city is situated around 300 km south of Warsaw at the intersection of important transportation routes. has been trying to position itself as Europe s Silicon Valley based on the large number of local and foreign hi tech companies. is the second city in Poland (after Warsaw) most often visited by foreigners. s central Old Town historic district has mostly been pedestrianised and the retail mix is diverse. Within the historic city centre the main retail streets are Floriańska Street, Grodzka Street, Szewska Street and Sławkowska Street. The first two being the most important. There are also a number of shopping centres in and around, which have taken from the old town as being the first locations for new market entrants to the city.

4 Key Retail Areas & Streets Rynek Główny The key retail streets in lead from the central Grand Square (Rynek Główny), which is a tourist destination, though also attracts local residents and students alike. The main retailers around the Rynek are Empik, Sephora, together with many restaurants and cafes. Floriańska Street Floriańska Street is probably s most famous and busiest shopping street. The street links the railway station close to the Brama Floriańska gate to the Rynek Główny. It is pedestrianised and long. The street attracts a broad mix of consumers. Retailers such as Orsay, Sephora, Pimkie, McDonalds are represented. Grodzka Street Grodzka Street is the second busiest street in. It is one of the oldest streets of and was part of a trade route leading from south to north. It is part of the Royal Route to Wawel Castle. It attracts a broad cross-section of shoppers, students and tourists. Retailers represented on the street include Benetton, L Occitane, Boss and Kenzo. BONARKA CITY CENTER One of the biggest shopping centers in the region with almost 100,000 sqm of retail space on 2 levels. Located a bit off the centre of the city, this centre will generate a healthy competition to Galeria Krakowska and along with Galeria Krakowska will dominate the market. Photo / Wiesław Majka UMK GALERIA KrakowSKA Similar to Warsaw Złote Tarasy it is connected with the main railway station and located in the strict city centre one needs only 5 minutes to walk from this location to the historical market square. ZAKOPIANKA Zakopianka is one of the older shopping centre locations which used to be a dominant centre before Galeria Krakowska and Bonarka were constructed. It features an effective hypermarket operator and is surrounded by additional retail and entertainment functions like sport outlet stores, cinema, DIY. GALERIA KAZIMIERZ Galeria Kazimierz was the first modern retail location in. Located pretty close to the city centre it combined both retail and entertainment. 2 levels of modern retail supported by a cinema and a futuristic (at a time) food court made it a destination point for many customers. It was however dominated by Galeria Krakowska.

6 Food & Beverage has always been famous for its gastronomy provision in the city centre. The main areas for food and beverage are the city s Old Town quarter and Kazimierz (Jewish District), just to the south of the centre. Restaurants in are characterized by a larger proportion of budget and mid range establishments aiming to appeal to the majority of diners, with a range of restaurants types, such as Italian pizza and pasta (Banolli, Pizza Hut etc), which would be usual to most cities. The Old Town (centred on the Rynek) has a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, bistros, grills, pizzerias, salad bars, etc to suit all tastes and budgets and are located in all types of buildings and on varying floors of old palatial residences and stately burghers around the oldest Medieval square in Europe. Kazimierz has many interesting and quirky bars, as well as coffee shops. There are not really any chain restaurants in the city centre, customers and tourists take advantage of unique restaurant concepts.
