Only one councillor, Dave Hume, voted for the proposal. Cr Bryn Jones said the proposal had grown too big and was im actin the site s amenity. The trial seems to have confi med the conce ns people had before it started, he says. And this permanent proposal would be on a larger scale. Cr Jon Strachan said the council s e essions of interest for the site had envisaged a site to showcase local a tists and be of benefit to the whole community. Alcohol focus The community events ha en t done too well and it seems that alcohol is the primary product, not food, he says. Locals crammed the gallery to vent their frustration. Resident Suzanne John says she saw concert goers defecating in bushes and men urinating because portaloos at the enue stan Cheryl Greaves, who coordinates the Round House volunteer heritage guides, said sound levels had spoiled tours and a wedding at the Roundhouse. Heritage belongs to all West Australians, not just emantle council she told the chamber. Another local said the trial had reduced the lass ese e to a blood pub. Sculptor Greg James, who owns a gallery at the hed said e cessi e noise and t a c befo e and during concerts had forced him to close on those days. unset ents James Legge said he though the trial had gone well and he was ha to wo with locals and the council to iron out any issues. Just like the arts centre the church was originally roofed in wood shingles, and just like the arts centre had never seen a metal roof. e suaded the chu ch that at (plain) clay roof tiles were a more sympathetic approach and similar price to colorbond steel (the more durable painted steel). Luckily the church was very sympathetic and they weren t listed with the Heritage Council! ow blind eddie can see the tiles on the church are miles closer to the o i inal wood shin le finish in appearance, compared to the Arts Centre steel; you don t need a heritage expert to tell you. Sadly the so called experts often can t see the woods for the trees on these issues, and this is a classic case. Apart from anything else ou wouldn t et the oofin manufacturer even recommending ordinary steel roof sheeting on the arts centre as it s too exposed and close to the sea, so there will be zero warranty and the roof will be corroding in no time! So it s the worst solution for everyone; ugly and with a short life span, and thus very costly in the end! Michael Willicombe Chudleigh St, Fremantle o af e WHILE the Liberal candidate for emantle he ufi has now quit the race it s important that his scare-mongering on same-sex marriage does not go unanswered. ufi claimed le alisin a marriage would lead to polygamous marriage. This is not true. In none of the 23 countries around the globe which now have marriage equality has polygamous marriage been a subsequent result, and some of these countries have had gay marriage for more than a decade. This is because gay marriage is about equality and polygamy is about inequality. Polygamous marriages are sexist and patriarchal, allowing one man to have several wives, but women can only have one husband. Polygamous marriages are only found in deeply conservative religious sects or Islamic countries, all of which condemn homosexuality and ban gay marriage. One does not lead to the other. The two issues are not compatible and cannot co-exist in the same jurisdiction. Equal marriage is about freedom and fairness, polygamous marriage is not. Brian Greig WA Convenor Australian Marriage Equality Whatley Cres, Bayswater The Ed says: Playing devil s advocate, why can t polygamous marriage include a woman taking an extra husband or two? Or for that matter, an extra wife to help hubby out? letters Time to clean the moron up I LOVE my little, progressive, lefty, forward-thinking port city. I am proud to consider myself a part of a community that supports environmental awareness, community development and social inclusion. I was also proud when a picture supporting marriage equality was erected on Little Lefroy Street; I am not sure who to thank, but I think it s a lovely representation of the equality I believe our community strives for. I was much less proud when some moron defaced it at least a month ago, and less proud still that it hasn t been cleaned up yet. So I say it s about time that this got cleaned up and marriage equality became the norm. Name withheld Beaconsfield Help the poor, not the rich THE Reserve Bank is rightly concerned that negative gearing is forcing up the price of housing. Already, Australia is one of the countries with the most expensive housing in the world. The average Australian is employed on a wage or a salary, already has a huge mortgage to pay back, is trying to provide the best education possible for children and can t a o d to s eculate and o into bigger debt to the banks. Negative gearing advantages the rich, it does give them an opportunity to defray tax, and also have capital gains once the property is sold. Australians, we have to ask ourselves these questions; do we want to have a bigger wealth gap than already exists, and why is negative gearing not allowed in the USA and some countries in Europe? Karlis Kelers Clydesdale St, Alfred Cove Be careful who we sell to he on oin olitical con ict over the proposed sale of emantle o t seems to s i t around who they consider to be prospective purchasers. With the recent debacle of the strategic port of Darwin being sold to Chinese interests at a time when the os ect of a med con ict is on the cards, the sale of any further strategic infrastructure to overseas interests exposes our politicians to charges of national subversion. The department copped a storm of criticism when it axed the ancient tree after a single complaint about the bees from a Coolbellup resident, with arborists saying it was healthy and the hive could have simply been moved. It later emerged the department s axeman, who d claimed the tree was in poor health, wasn t a registered arboriculturist. The martyred tree was hailed one of Cockburn s most ancient and si nificant he ita e a ahs by Cockburn council which has now added another 446 jarrah, tuart and marri gums to its si nificant t ee list to t and protect them. Many were recommended by the Save Beeliar Wetlands environmental group. The corridor of trees stretches through Bibra Lake Reserve and Beeliar Regional Park, and is believed to provide habitat for threatened Carnaby s black cockatoos as well as several other species. Purple pall It s also along the path of the looming Roe 8 highway extension. The register doesn t provide legal protection for trees, but the council wants developers to seek special permission before removing any. What it does do is put a special value for these trees on the community, says Kate Kelly, Save Beeliar Wetlands convenor. Cockburn s planning director Daniel Arndt hopes trees listing will convey their importance to Main Roads and the Barnett government. All but two of the 114 submissions the council received about the listing were from supporters. 5 Is your welcome mat out? WHAT a wonderful letter from Tina Wilson last week ( How simply awful, dahling, Herald, May 28, 2016) in response to my concern about homeless people sleeping in the side entrance to Tivoli Hall in Kintail Road, Applecross. As Melville city council has moved swiftl to close o this ni htl shelte with iron gates, it s reassuring that people like Tina would welcome these unfortunate folk into her neighbourhood with open arms. Unfortunately Tina, the Editor did not publish your street address so if you let me know where you live in Palmyra I will ha e m chau eu deli e them to ou doorstep next week. Bless you, Tina! Barry Thornton Kintail Road, Applecross Era of the all-rounders THE death of Merv Cowan brings to a close another chapter in Fremantle sporting history, but it also represents the passing of a member of a dying breed: the all-round champion sportsman. Mr Cowan is mostly remembered as a premiership captain with the East Fremantle football club, but what is sometimes forgotten is that he was also a superb cricketer (captain of Fremantle s A-grade cricket team), a state champion swimmer and played in the WA state water polo team. Like another Fremantle boy, Arthur Marshall (who also played league football for East Fremantle and A-grade cricket herald letters for Fremantle, but was better known as a champion tennis, squash and table tennis player) Mr Cowan grew up in the era when gifted sportsmen could turn their hands to man di e ent s o ts and e cel in most. Other great WA sportsmen who were champions is several disciplines were Keith Slater, Rick Charlesworth, John Baguley, Derek Chadwick and Ian Brayshaw. Today s focus on professionalism demands specialisation, so that athletically-gifted young people devote themselves to a single sport. This has made life less interesting for everyone, including the young athletes themselves. Roger Underwood Palin St, Palmyra The Ed says: It s not just specialisation, there s all the grip-and-grin sponsor events and posing for adverts, not to mention the all-important Twittering to ensure everyone s aware of how important you are. Turning Japanese? I don t think so I WAS quite amazed to see how much the mayor of Melville earns. Do we really need a mayor, as I thought a large part of the job was socialising. Maybe he could take a cut in salary and spend some of the money on greening Melville as he promised. The Japanese elms that have been planted in abundance don t look as if they are going to provide any shade or food for our birds. Surely we can come up with something better for our suburbs. 8 S tation closure angers by STEVE GRANT COCKBURN Labor MLA Fran Logan and councillor Phil Eva are unhappy the Spearwood police station looks like being closed down in a couple of months. At a budget estimates committee on May 24, police commissioner Karl alla han confi med he had no plans to keep the station open once a new $21 million complex opens in Cockburn Central. Work on the new station is ploughing on, and this year s budget allocation was just a couple of million dolla s to finish o thin s li e landscaping. In my mind there is no point in building a new police station and continuing to occupy the old one, the commissioner replied to questions from Mr Logan. Dr O Callaghan said the Spearwood station was old and too costly to spruce up. Not suitable I have advised government that I will not run a policing service out of a building that is not suitable to run a policing service out of, he said. The reason we are building a new place at Cockburn Central is that some of our infrastructure in that part of the wo ld is not fit fo olicin But Cr Eva says Cockburn Central is miles from Spearwood, and says local esidents who e been su e in a ise in crime will be furious to hear they ll have to wait fo o ce s to come f om so fa away. Mr Logan agrees: Residents in the western area of Cockburn, particularly Coogee, Spearwood and Munster will take some convincing that a police presence will be as good or better with the mo in of o ce s and sta to oc bu n Central, he told the Herald. The area used to be an important seem as rough as the commissioner was making out. It s not that bad, Mr Logan said. Hamilton Hill doesn t really have a central hub but we hope there will be soon, vice president Maureen Fisher-Sim told the Herald. Sunday s event will give visitors an impression of farm life in the 19th century, with cow-milking workshops, Clydesdale ploughing and wagon rides, a petting farm, and blacksmithing demonstrations. The real deal on Minilya food JENNY D ANGER Unleash your inner Geisha at THE promise of evolving menus and daily specials are all very well, but what about when your taste buds are haunted by something no longer available. Such is the case with Cafelumos little sister Emily s Corner in Palmyra. It was the best blue vein mu n d e e eaten and the memory of its sharp saltiness teases my tongue whenever something light and savoury is called for. I drop in to Lumos and Emily s from time to time in hope, but although there s always something satisfying as compensation it s not the same. Tranform On my last visit to Cafelumos a substantial meal was on my mind as I met up with mates for lunch. Talking about how the daggy little shopping centre once was home to drug deals and frequent deli hold-ups, we were surprised to find the cafe s now been oin since how time ies Cafelumos did wonders to transform the area, and these da s the deals in ol e a mu n with ou co ee and the onl hold-ups are getting stuck choosin f om all that s on o e on the extensive menu. One of our party went for the special of the day, a wheel-hub sized bowl of Indian puy and roma tomato soup. Great taste, but so thick it should be called a dhal not soup, she said. The nasi goreng ($19.50) went down well, the Indonesian spices subtle but familiar from many Bali visits. The free range chicken was tender and moist, and the egg topping just the right consistency. A steak sandwich ($22) was also well received for its tender, e fectl coo ed scotch fillet and chimichurri (a spicy Argentinean green sauce). I went for the roast vegetable foccacia ($17) and chips. The aubergine, capsicum, pumpkin and tomato were a mix of oast and ma inated a ou s and the English spinach was fresh and crisp. As always the chips were divine, crunchy outside and soft and u inside Some of the cakes are house made, and I can vouch for many of them. On this occasion we couldn t go past sharing a raspberry and lemon meringue tart ($6.90) from local bakery Sweet Desire with our excellent co ees They were so good we rather wished we d had one each. The artists explore the psychological aspect of place and belonging, co-ordinator and printmaker Shana James explains. It s the idea of what it means to be in a good space or place in your self rather than something external, she says. Some are about real places others are imagined. James teaches printmaking at the Fremantle Arts Centre and the exhibition ropes in some of her favourite colleagues. I created an exhibition I wanted to see, the Spearwood local says. History Including etching, collography [ink applied with a roller or paint brush], drypoint and relief printing these processes have a history spanning centuries. It takes time and dedication to build these skills. In a digital age where we are swamped b uic fi ima es it s a welcome space of considered contemplation. Her exquisite prints are inspired by Lewis Carroll s Alice in Wonderland, and its questions of identity, childhood innocence, angst and absurdity. ari atayama s details of e eryday ob ects draw the iewer in abo e while Laura Whittock s whimsical lino cuts left tell of a life changing e perience Fremantle printmaker Harvey Mullen s prints retrace a trek through the Tasmanian wilderness. One scene leads onto the next, moving deeper into the mountains and further away from civilisation. Hailing from Namibia, Elmari Steyn s works are of rare plants, deserts and windscou ed sho es he e ect her deep connection to the environment, and the transition to a new country and a new sense of place. Megan Gosling reconstructs her recollections through the distortion of memory, creating patterns that are familiar but not quite accurate. Laura Whittock s whimsical lino cuts are very real, and speak volumes about cycling from the UK to China, which for her was a life-changing year. Mari Katayama owned a micro restaurant in Japan and uses domestic objects in her works: The tiny scale beckons the viewer closer in order to contemplate these small stories of everyday life, James says. Nadia Cullinane explores her place in the world through recurring motifs of nature. Heathcote s galleries are an exploration of place in themselves, James says. There are little rooms for the small works and big rooms for the big works. Seven Printmakers is at Heathcote Gallery, Duncraig Road, Applecross, until July 3. It is the world under the sea. With an unbridled passion for the oceans, Glen has for the last 21 years explored and photographed the beautiful seascapes and life-forms that exist both up and down our WA coast and all around the world. These all come together in a stunning display that at times can literally take your breath away at Glen s beautiful gallery studio space inside one of the old pilot s cottages next to the Roundhouse in Fremantle. With a history of over 36 exhibitions and the creation of a large-format coffee table book, owans work bridges the gap between photography and art. His philosophy is to allow nature to be the artist and let the seascapes, colours and life forms of the ocean create masterpieces that offer viewers a rare experience, a glimpse of natural beauty far greater than many imagine. I moved from Canada in 1970, settled in Sydney with my young family and continued my professional career as a physiotherapist. All through the 1980s and 90s my job took me to many outback communities. A lot of my inspiration originated from flying over the desert and coastline seeing the ancient land formations and vibrant colours the wet and dry seasons create. Since moving to Western Australia in 1994, in addition to observing the shapes from afar, I also have enjoyed bush camping all through the state, sketching and painting at close range. A chuckling Ms Ferrari su ests stu and nonsense but her husband favours desirables because he reckons people often come in saying I don t really need this, but geez I want it! A collector for 40 years, Mr Ferrari says he empathises with hoarders who ve been squeezed out of some of their own rooms by b ic a b ac but he can o e some relief. ina and Paul errari get cosy which is the way they like it at ld eller Photos by Trilokesh Chanmugam The pair do home visits, taking away a few treasures to free up some space. Mr Ferrari started collecting vintage guitars and found that led him to places with lots of other interesting collectibles, so he expanded his trade. on reall nee is u gee wan i he e a is fill ld elle with stu the lo e and ha e to ma e a conce ted e o t to bu thin s with their business hats on. I don t want a shop that s full of cobwebs and things that have been here for 40 years, says Mr Ferrari. Old Yeller is a bit of a junk shop, but the well curated selection of stu and nonsense has broad appeal and the Ferraris do a booming trade for the three days a week they re open for business. Mr Ferrari often comes in to find fin e ints all o e the windows from passersby eagerly peeping inside. The shop has the feel of a tiny museum, but one where you can buy anything, so there s a lot to see if you press your face up against the glass. There are several dioramas, an impressive collection of vintage instruments, assorted trinkets and ornaments, and some unique furniture. There s also a selection of records, some globes, and a strange quantity of ram skulls. 17 at home JENNY D ANGER THE fragrance of new carpet and the tang of salty air mix in this brand new North Coogee townhouse. This two-bedroom/twobathroom abode is the perfect beach house for a young couple starting out, or retirees looking for an easy maintenance lock and leave. Wending your way to the beach through walkways and parklands this North Coogee estate has the feel of a close-knit community where neighbours know each other and kids kick a ball around, or jump on their bikes and head to South Beach. A tidy courtyard garden fronts this home, a pleasant spot to watch the passing parade and greet neighbours. The open-plan living/ dining/kitchen is a spacious, li ht filled s ace with hu e windows/doors to the courtyard. The compact kitchen has attractive golden striated timber-look cupboards, including a double pantry, and soft close drawers topped by crisp white caesar stone tops. Sliding doors hide the adjacent, laundry in a cupboard, and the downstairs powder room has a cute Alice in Wonderland door that leads to a surprisingly spacious storage area tucked under the stairs. The bedrooms are upstairs, including the main, with its ensuite and balcony. herald There s basement parking for two cars, along with a secure store room. But with a heap of cafes, restaurants and shops in walking distance, and Fremantle a quick CAT bus ride away, the cars might not get out much. 18/2 Shoalwater Street, North Coogee $560,000-$595,000 Glenn O Connor Smith Brad Raynor Acton Projects, Nedlands at home Perfect beach house 8,000 Full Colour DL Flyers $999 Incl. The winds of fortune are gusty and unpredictable. With Mars in Scorpio, you may feel inclined to deal with this by digging yourself into a hole. That s not going to be successful and you know it. Dig into the feelings that are in the way of a breakthrough. TAURUS (Apr 21 May 20) This is a week where nothing is nailed down. Everything is moving. Hammer your tent pegs in securely. If you take the appropriate precautions, you will be in a good position to shine while others are scuttling around taking shelter. Get your roots down and be prepared to bend. GEMINI (May 21 June 21) You love shifts and changes. The more the merrier. They oxygenate your life. This being the case, you are in for a treat. Existence is moving the furniture. It s renovating. It s removing the set for act one and replacing it with the set for act two. Embraced, transformation comes with this. CANCER (June 22 Jul 22) The Moon joins the Sun and Venus in Gemini early in the week. Add to this a cohort of planets in mutable signs and we have a recipe for change cooking itself up. Though your natural tendency is to close the front door and huddle up, it would be better to meet change directly this time. LEO (July 23 Aug 22) The winds of change are blowing strong. Your focus is on securing your tent. Though the temptation to pack it up and move on is strong, that would be reactive rather than responsive; and we all know what happens when we make major decisions reactively. Stick with what s true. VIRGO (Aug 23 Sept 22) Yours is an interesting predicament. There s a grand square in the sky inviting movement and change; and there s a grand trine in the earth signs, inviting stability and ease. This will give you the ability to be as steady as a rock, while juggling change. Access centeredness and dexterity. LIBRA (Sept 23 Oct 23) This is a good week for exercising your penchant for staying still when there s a whole lot of movement around you. Life is swinging and moving all over the place. When push comes to shove, you really do have the capacity to come into a state of genuine equanimity. Access it now. SCORPIO (Oct 24 Nov 21) Mars is back. His focus is on helping you to master your craft. It doesn t matter what your craft is. To be able to make a cup of coffee well, is as much a doorway to the mysteries as is painting a masterpiece. Creative process demands authenticity, transformation and breakthrough. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 Dec 21) You are face to face with a smorgasbord of both difficulty and opportunity. It is relationship of one kind of another that has gotten you to this point. Love demands authenticity. There s no escaping it. Breakthrough is all yours to feast on, if you are willing to shift into the next gear. Be clear. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 Jan 19) Capricorn rules the bones. Gemini, where the Sun is right now, rules the nervous system. Though very different, each would be in big trouble without the other. This moment requires flexibility, the capacity to turn on a sixpence. ou have a gift to give those who are rattled by change. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 Feb 18) There is a beautiful pattern forming in the heavens at the moment. It suggests a mix of solidity and fluidity. e are both. It s a rare moment when we aren t trying to be one or the other, but are instead embracing both. Remember your vision; we are here to be whole human beings. PISCES (Feb 19 Mar 20) The events of the world are forcing you into having a big think. The more you see what is going on around you, the more you want to know who you are, what you stand for and what it is you might be here to do on planet earth. Life is engineering an awakening. Let it happen. M.J.Dean (Sudhir) 2016 Sudhir
