The Athenaeum has had many distinguished members, including William Roscoe. Visit the splendid News Room and the stunning Elliptical Staircase. The Bluecoat School Lane, Liverpool L1 3BX T: September, 12pm-4pm Location: Liverpool city Description: One of Liverpool s most distinctive buildings, the Bluecoat is over 290 years old and has recently been refurbished with a new wing designed by Biq Architecten. The CEO and Artistic Director of the Bluecoat will be leading tours on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September at 2pm and 3pm, exploring the Grade I-listed building s rich heritage. Explore at the Bluecoat also offers a range of heritage activities for children between 12pm-4pm on the 11 and 12 September. Croxteth Hall & Country Park. Since the 16th century, this Grade II-listed stately home, set in beautiful parkland, was home to the Earls of Sefton, until the death of the last Earl in There will be free admission to the Hall for Heritage Open Days. The Cunard Building Water Street, Liverpool L3 1EG T: and 18 September, 10.30am Location: Pier Head, Liverpool city Description: Take a tour of the beautiful Grade II*-listed Cunard Building that graces the Liverpool waterfront. Built as offices for the Cunard Shipping Line, it is of an Italianite style popular in New York at the beginning of the 20 th century. Pre-booking is essential for these tours, call The Royal Liver Building Pier Head, Liverpool L3 1HT T: September and September 11am & 2pm Location: Pier Head, Liverpool city Description: The Grade I-listed Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognised buildings in the world. It was designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas in 1908, and was completed in 1911, as one of the first buildings in the world to have reinforced concrete structure. The building is named after the Royal Liver Assurance Company who constructed the building to be their head office. As a special treat for Heritage Open Days, the bell chamber will be available to the public on Thursday 9 and Thursday 16 September. The Step Back in Time Tour is a wonderful experience revealing the architectural features of the building, clips and slapstick comedy. Liverpool Town Hall High Street, Liverpool L2 3SW T: September, 10am-5pm Location: Liverpool city Description: Liverpool Town Hall was constructed between 1749 and 1820 and is Grade I-listed. It has played an important role in much of the city s history and continues to do so, regularly being used for civic receptions, council eetings, conferences, weddings and dinners. Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King Mount Pleasant, Liverpool L3 5TQ T: September, 10am-4pm Well serviced by buses 14, 61, 79, 82E and 86C and is within walking distance from Liverpool city Description: Liverpool s dramatic Roman Catholic Cathedral features glorious multi-coloured windows and modern artworks. Visit the fascinating Crypt, designed in the 1930 s by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the only section of a grand design that was never realised. The Port of Liverpool Building Pier Head, Liverpool L3 1BZ T: and September, 10am & 1pm Location: Pier Head, Liverpool city Description: The Port of Liverpool Building was erected between and was the first of the Three Graces to be built. The design was the subject of a local competition won in 1900 by Briggs and Wolstenholme with Hobbs and Thornley and is Grade II*-listed within the World Heritage Site. Description: Speke Hall is a beautiful and rare example of a timber framed Tudor manor house and is set in fine landscaped gardens on the outskirts of Liverpool. St George s Hall St John s Lane, Liverpool L1 1JJ T: September, 2.00pm Location: Liverpool city Description: St George s Hall is described as one of the finest Neo-Classical buildings in the country. This Grade I-listed building opened in 1854, contains a magnificent Great Hall, sumptuous Concert Room and courts that held some of the most well-known trials of the 20th century. There will be a guided tour held at 2pm each day. Entrance is via the Heritage Centre which is open 10am-5pm daily (last admission 4.30pm). Description: Sudley House, built in 1821, is the former residence of the Holt family. View the only art collection of a Victorian merchant in its original domestic setting. 2

3 Toxteth Town Hall 15 High Park Street, Toxteth, Liverpool L8 8DX Heritage Open Days 10 September, 10.30am-5pm serviced by number 82 bus from Liverpool city Description: Built in 1865, this Grade II-listed building was known as the Township of Toxteth Park Public Offices. Previous uses include registry office and mortuary. The building has recently undergone a refurbishment and restoration project re-instating some of the hall s original features. There will be a number of events throughout the day including visits to High Park Street reservoir and the viewing platform to see the repair and conservation of the Florrie. Key speakers will explore the local history of the area. INNOVATION & INDUSTRY Bridewell Studios 101 Prescot Street, Liverpool L7 8UE T: September, 12pm-4pm serviced by number 86 bus from Liverpool city centre opposite Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Description: The building is a well preserved example of an early 20th century police station and has many original features including cells. The building is now used as studios for artists and crafts people covering many artistic disciplines. Engine Room of the Bascule Bridge Stanley Dock, Regent Road, Liverpool L3 0BE September, 1.30pm-5pm Located approximately 1 mile north of the Pier Head. Sandhills Train Station is 10 minutes walk Description: Completed in 1932 for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, this is the last surviving Bascule Bridge in Liverpool and only one of a few left in the country. The exterior has been recently restored but the original engine and other internal fittings survive. Street. Sandhills Train Station is located 10 minutes walk away. Description: The last remaining example of a steam powered, coal fired tug/tender, launched in 1903 in Birkenhead. The Daniel Adamson was originally built for the Shropshire Union Canal and Railway Company, she was acquired in 1936 by the Manchester Ship Canal Company. Guided tours will provide an opportunity for visitors to see the collections not normally open to the public. This elegant Georgian terraced house was home to one of Liverpool s best known photographers. It contains exhibitions of Hardman s photographs, his studio, darkroom and living quarters. The National Conservation Centre Whitechapel, Liverpool L1 6HZ T: September and 16 September, 1pm & 3pm Location: Liverpool city Description: The Midland Railway Company s Goods Distribution Warehouse, built in 1874, now houses the conservation division of National Museums Liverpool. Take a tour and learn about the history and architecture of the building and the site it occupies. Description: The Victoria Gallery & Museum is housed in the Grade II-listed Victoria Building designed by Alfred Waterhouse. Description: Walton s Old Grammar School is one of Liverpool s oldest extant buildings and the city s oldest schoolhouse. The present building dates from 1613 and replaces an earlier school of The 18th century Welsh poet, Goronwy Owen, worked in Walton as curate and assistant headmaster. West Derby Courthouse West Derby Village, Liverpool L12 5HJ 12 and 19 September, 2pm-4pm Well serviced by buses 12 and 13 from the city Description: Grade II*-listed West Derby Courthouse was built in It is the only free-standing, post-medieval courthouse in Britain. This unique tiny court with Tudor benches, remains an unchanged time capsule since its last sitting in

5 Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre The Old Stableyard, Smithdown Lane, Liverpool L7 3EE T: September and 17 September, 10.30am am serviced by buses 79 and 139 from the city Description: Take a 40 minute guided tour through a section of the maze of tunnels constructed in the early 19th century by eccentric local philanthropist Joseph Williamson. Learn about Williamson s motives for their development and the lives and times of hundreds of workers employed by him. The tour begins and ends at the Oratory adjacent to the piazza of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Liverpool Classic Bus Running Day Liverpool city centre and Suburbs 12 September, 10am-6pm Location: Pick-up points include Pier Head (Mann Island), Penny Lane (Smithdown Place), Woolton and Liverpool South Parkway Interchange in Garston. Description: Merseyside Transport Trust host a classic bus running day using a variety of period buses from the last 50 years, recreating some of Liverpool s bus routes. This service is free of charge for Heritage Open Days. For details and information on how to obtain a timetable visit The Regeneration of Ropewalks Guided Tour Liverpool city centre 9-10 September, 10.30am & 2.30pm Location: Ropewalks is within walking distance of the city Description: Enjoy a guided tour of Ropewalks looking at recent regeneration projects. Decline occurred in this area following the closure of the south docks. Recently, Liverpool City Council has been regenerating one of the city s most vibrant communities and this tour will explore the progress that has been made. Description: This quaint, octagonal sandstone building situated on Wavertree s old village green, was constructed in 1796 as a place to hold drunks and criminals overnight. The building later provided temporary accommodation for cholera victims and refugees during the Irish famine. There are also Heritage Open Days events taking place on the same day Holy Trinity Church, Liverpool Blue Coat School Foundation and Wavertree Congregational Church located nearby. Unity Theatre 1 Hope Place, Liverpool L1 9BG September, 10.30am-6pm 13 September, 1pm-6pm September, 10.30am-6pm 19 September, 1pm-3pm serviced by buses 1, 2, 74, 75, 80, 82 and 86 and is within walking distance from the city Description: Originally built as a synagogue in 1857, Merseyside Unity Theatre moved into the building in The building was refurbished in 1998 and is now a receiving house for professional theatre companies. Exhibitions include art and photography from the many artists who have exhibited in the building over the last thirty years. There will be a To Do Market on the 19 September, 1pm-3pm which includes lots of free activities for children. SACRED SITES All Saints Church Childwall Lane, Liverpool L16 0JW 18 September, 10am-4.30pm 19 September, 12pm-4pm serviced by buses 14, 79, 174 & 838. Description: All Saints Church is a beautiful Grade I-listed building. It is very likely that there has been a place of worship on this site since the 11th century. The first documented reference to the graveyard was in 1386 and it is the burial place of national civic dignitaries and the first Bishop of Liverpool. 5

6 Christ Church Toxteth Park Linnet Lane, Liverpool L17 3BG 11 September, 10am-5pm 12 September, 12pm-5pm Well serviced by buses 60, 82 (A, B & D). Description: This Grade II-listed church opened in 1871 and is one of the largest in the area, seating over 800 people. There will be an exhibition from artists living in the Lark Lane area on display. Dovedale Baptist Church Dovedale Road, Liverpool L18 1DW 11 September, 10am-4pm serviced by the 80A from the city Mossley Hill Train Station is located nearby. Description: Dovedale Baptist Church was built in 1906 and has interesting architectural and Art Deco features. Guided tours of the building are available upon request. Gateacre Unitarian Chapel Gateacre Brow, Liverpool L25 3PB 11 September, 10am-4pm serviced by the 74 bus from the city Description: Built in 1700, Gateacre Unitarian Chapel is Grade II-listed. Notable features include the Good Samaritan Window (1872), the Wedding Chest (1707) and the Bell Tower (1723). Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas 3 Berkley Street, Toxteth, Liverpool L8 1XB T: September, 10am-3pm serviced by buses 74, 75, 80, 80A, 86(A,C&D) from the city Description: Built in 1870, the Greek Orthodox Church of St Nicholas is a typical example of Byzantine architecture, boasting four domes. This was the second purpose built Orthodox church in England and is Grade II-listed. Gustaf Adolf Kyrka-The Seamen s Church 138 Park Lane, Liverpool L1 8HG T: September, 11am-4pm 18 September, 11am-6pm Location: 5 minutes walk from the city centre Description: This recently re-classified Grade II* listed building is one of only four octagonal churches in England and has considerable architectural significance. The church was designed in 1883 by local architect W.D. Caroe as a first commission. Caroe later went on to be a major figure in the Gothic revival in Britain. Films will be shown on 18 September from 2pm-6pm depicting Scandinavia and the works of Arthur Dooley. Parish Church of St John the Baptist West Derby Road / Green Lane, Liverpool L13 7EA September, 9.30am-6pm 14 and 18 September, 9.30am-12pm 19 September, 9.30am-1pm serviced by buses 12, 13, 15 and 18A from the city Description: Consecrated in 1871, this Grade I-listed building is a fine example of Victorian and Gothic architecture. 7 Princes Road Synagogue, Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation Princes Road, Liverpool L8 1TG T: September, 10am-3.30pm Well serviced by buses 74, 75, 80, 80A, 86(A&D) from the city Description: This Grade I-listed building was erected in 1874 following an architectural design competition for a brand new synagogue. William and George Audsley, the winners, produced an ornate and unusual building on a site offered by the Earl of Sefton. There are many Eastern and Western influences to be seen. St Christopher s Church Lorenzo Drive, Liverpool L11 1BQ September, 10am-4pm serviced by buses 14(A&B) and 61 from the city Description: Built in 1934, this Grade II*-listed Art Deco building is known as the Children s Church. Notable features include an open air pulpit in the courtyard. St Clare s Church Arundel Avenue, Sefton Park, Liverpool L17 2AU 11 September, 10am-5pm serviced by buses 60, 74, 75 and 80(A) from the city Description: St Clare s is a Grade I-listed church which was completed in The founders of the church were Francis and James Reynolds and the architect was Leonard Stokes. Description: St Francis Xavier s is a stunning Grade II*-listed Victorian Catholic Church. The nave was designed by JJ Scholes and was opened in The Lady Chapel, which is the size of a small parish church was designed by Edmund Kirby and opened in There will be displays of some of the church s outstanding collection of Victorian church plate and vestments. Enjoy a tour of the church at 2pm each day. On Sunday 12 September at 3.30pm, Cheniston Roland will give a talk on Sir Charles Santley, the famous Victorian tenor and Queen Victoria s favourite singer. He was one of the first people to have his voice recorded and there will be a chance to hear this historic recording. St George s Church Everton Heyworth Street, Liverpool L5 3QG 18 September, 10am-4pm 19 September, 12.30pm-4pm serviced by the 17 bus from the city Description: St George s Church also known as the Iron Church was consecrated in 1814 and is built on the site of the former Everton beacon. This Grade I listed building was designed by architect Thomas Rickman and built by iron founder, John Cragg, of standardised cast iron parts also used in the internal structure. St Mary the Virgin Walton Parish Church Church Lane, County Road, Liverpool L4 5PW 11 September, 10am-4pm (last admission to tower 3pm) 12 September, 1pm-4pm (last admission to tower 3pm) serviced by buses 20 and 21 from the city Description: Walton Parish Church is one of the oldest in the North West and houses an ancient stone cross and baptismal font, both over 900 years old. Tours of the stained-glass windows by Edward Carter-Preston are available upon request. Visitors can ascend the church s tower which offers stunning views of Liverpool and Merseyside. Description: St Michael s is the second cast-iron church built by John Cragg and Thomas Rickman and is an impressive Grade I-listed building. Historical displays and booklets will be available to visitors. St Stephen s Gateacre Belle Vale Road, Liverpool L25 2PQ 11 September, 10.30am-4.30pm serviced by buses 79, 81 & 89 from the city Description: St Stephen s Church was built in 1874 and was designed by Cornelius Sherlock. The west window was designed by Burne-Jones and the east window by Frederick Preedy. Ullet Road Unitarian Church 57 Ullet Road, Liverpool L17 2AA September, 1pm-4pm serviced by buses 75, 76 and 80 from the city Description: Grade I-listed Ullet Road Church was built between and contains items of Art Nouveau, fine wood carvings and stained glass windows of the highest quality. The library, cloisters and hall were added in Wavertree Congregational Church Hunters Lane, Wavertree, Liverpool L15 8HL 19 September, 12.30pm-4.30pm serviced by buses 78 and 79 from the city Description: Opened in 1839, Wavertree Congregational Church is situated in a peaceful conservation area. There have been various additions to the building including a porch, gallery and a wonderful Henry Willis Organ.
