3 Charter President Henry Hudson OAM In 1982 I was a member of the Rotary Club of Drysdale. During this time I was invited to join a committee to investigate the possibility of forming a Rotary Club of Ocean Grove. So, as history tells, I was a Charter Member for the Ocean Grove Rotary Club in 1983 and in 2005 the Charter President for the Rotary Club of Queenscliffe. The Rotary Club of Queenscliffe, has been my Rotary Club for the past decade, and now the Queenscliffe Rotary Club has come full circle and is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Congratulations all round to every Rotary Club of Queenscliffe Rotarian, friends of Rotary, partners, past members and families. The formation of a new Rotary Club is a significant development in the life of a community. It requires an earnest desire by some citizens to dedicate themselves to the ideals and discipline required by Rotary International in the application of the philosophy Service above Self The Rotary Club of Queenscliffe s first year was steered by a dedicated membership. Frank Mountford as Secretary fulfilled all the demanding roles required in this position. Peter and Fay Reinbach shared the position of Treasurer with Fay volunteering as Attendance Officer. Carmel and Allan Murphy covered all the media applications for the Club throughout the year. Alan Joyce filled the dedicated role of Community Service Director. 5 President Rod Stewart The third year of operation of the Rotary Club of Queenscliffe had been one of consolidation and strengthening of the foundations set in previous years. The Club was able to fulfil all its obligations to the local community, international and the Rotary Foundation. Locally the club supported the residents living in the special accommodation The Lodge with the aim of improving their standard of living by donating furniture, clothing, linen and providing alternative meals such as BBQ s and fish and chips. The Club also provided a Christmas excursion on the Bellarine Steam Railway to Drysdale, with a BBQ. Christmas Gift bags were distributed to all Lodge residents at Christmas time. The Club was involved in supporting the Good Friday Children s Hospital Appeal at the Queenscliffe Seafood Fest. The Club also supported the Christmas tree lights and associated festivities, the Lions Club Hot Rod Show and the Surf Life Saving Club Open Ocean Swim. The major focus for this Rotary year was on improving literacy in various communities. The Club continued to support the Thang Chaglay English School in Cambodia by providing much needed essential stationery for the students. Two new literacy initiatives were introduced. Firstly the Club committed funds to supply every newborn baby in the Borough with a first reader and encouraged parents to read regularly to their babies. Secondly, an essay competition was established between the three primary schools in the community. This proved to be a successful project and encouraged young students to improve their writing skills. Fund raising through raffle ticket sales, BBQs at the Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale Markets successfully raised funds that were distributed to local charities and the Rotary Foundation. The Club was also privileged to host members of the visiting UK Rotary Friendship Tour Group and Rotarians from all over the Geelong area attended a memorable evening with them. Members attended District activities including the District Conference, District Assembly and leadership forums. 8 President Kevin Carey The year started with enthusiasm and optimism. There were 15 of us ready and willing to make this a successful Rotary year. My aim was to increase club hands on activities in the community. Off to the CCMA with an application for a $5,000 grant to establish a program to eradicate the Indian Myna bird populations from within the Borough. All to no avail. They changed the rules. Grant funds were not available for programs to eradicate feral animal/ and or bird populations. Back to the traditional programs for the Club s fund raising endeavours. Market BBQs in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale, and Ballarat South Raffle ticket sales being our Club s staple fundraisers. The year s fundraising activities provided much needed donations, nationally and internationally for natural disasters. The extensive flooding in Queensland and rural Victoria and the earthquake devastation in Christchurch New Zealand were major recipients of club donations from the Rotary Club of Queenscliffe. At the international level contributions were made via Disaster Aid and Shelter Box Australia. Literacy was supported in the community with the Rotary Club of Queenscliffe s Literacy Competition for the three local primary schools, plus a book for every new born in the Borough. International literacy was supported for the Udalo school in the Philippines. Two donations helped the school to access electricity, educational requisites and add another classroom. This program was initiated by past Queenscliffe Rotary Club member, Rick Aitchison. The Club continued with literacy donations supporting the Pungro Village School in Cambodia. This connection was instigated by past Rotary Club of Queenscliffe member, Judie MacMillan. The District was host to a Friendship Exchange from District 6950, Florida USA. Rotary Club of Queenscliffe was the final journey hosting club for District Five GSE (Group Study Exchange) members were billeted in the Queenscliff Point Lonsdale area for a week. Individual, targeted work place experience activities were organised for each member. The GSE visitors were extremely happy to have their last stay at iconic Queenscliff Point Lonsdale. The Ocean Grove Rotary Club and Drysdale Club helped support this program. The Club continued with its community support for The Lodge Queenscliff, The Point Lonsdale Christmas Tree Lights, Christmas Toy Run for Geelong Hospital, Point Lonsdale Surf Club Open Water Swim, Hot Rod show Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale Easter Fair, Donations in Kind, and support with the local Lions Club (RSL Seniors Christmas Luncheon Queenscliff). 9 President Rod Stewart In my second term of President, the Club continued to support the many activities initiated in the past. The Club continued to fulfil its obligations to the local community, District, International and the Rotary Foundation. This year there was a focus on endeavouring to expand the efforts of the Club without extending the members commitment beyond which a small club such as ours can successfully achieve. We continued to support the residents of the Lodge in Queenscliff with donations of furniture, clothing, linen and Christmas gift bags. We also continued to provide regular alternative meals such as fish and chips, BBQs and KFC. Literacy projects such as first readers for the newborn babies in the borough were continued. These have proved very popular with the parents. The essay competition amongst the three primary schools was also well received. Continued support for the Christmas tree lighting and associated festivities, the Borough s Children s Hospital Good Friday Appeal activities and the Surf Life Saving Club, Open Ocean Swim was forthcoming. Fund raising activities included the Ballarat South Rotary Club Car Raffle, BBQs at the Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale Markets. The Club continued to make donations to our local community and internationally which included funds to the Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus. Increased efforts from our club members came in the form of support for the Udalo School in the Philippines where we provided electricity and fans to the school. Kevin Carey and myself attended the Rotary International Conference in Bangkok. The Club was fortunate to be able to host a dinner for the Icelandic Rotary Friendship Tour group and many visiting Rotarians enjoyed a memorable evening with them. A new fund raising adventure was implemented. This was the Lego Exhibition and it proved to be a great success. It is hoped that this event will continue and provide funds for various Rotary activities. Once again the Rotary Club of Queenscliffe has demonstrated that its members are committed to the ideals of Rotary and while it is a very small club, it is also a successful club. 10 President Marianne Deacon The year was a memorable one for our Club in terms of public recognition. Firstly, our Club was recognized by the Borough of Queenscliffe for our Queenscliffe Bricks (LEGO Display) as the Community Event of the Year Additionally, our treasurer Wayne Pecar was recognized as the Citizen of the Year 2013 for his long and distinguished service to Rotary and the local community and especially as the sole Christmas Tree climber for the previous 13 years. Further, our Club was also recognised by the District for achieving 100% member attendance throughout the Rotary year As in past years, our Club continued to support local, national and international projects. Highlights included another successful lighting of the Christmas tree, a second very successful Queenscliffe Bricks display, and another well supported Primary Schools Literacy Competition. Memorable donations included a Sand Cruiser wheelchair to the Disabled Surfers Association of Ocean Grove and a ceiling mounted projection screen to the Point Lonsdale Primary School for their newly redeveloped school/community hall. The year was a year of accomplishments. We achieved what few clubs manage to attain and that is having our club recognised for 100 % of our members as Paul Harris fellows by Rotary Foundation. We also increased our membership by 20% to 15 members. We spent a great deal of time updating and reviewing the Club Constitution and Bylaws as per the new Incorporations Act resulting in a compliant and simplified working document. Additionally, we established a Club website which provides visitors to the site with comprehensive and useful information. The purchase of a new P.A. system added a new dimension to our meetings improving our presentations. A record $15,000 was donated to various worthwhile causes. These included the purchase of a water fountain for the redeveloped foreshore in Point Lonsdale, and co funding fridge magnets depicting the locations of defibrillators in the local area with the Queenscliff Point Lonsdale Community Enterprise Group. Memorable events included hosting children and carers from Camp Quality to an evening BBQ at the Beacon Caravan Park and visiting the Riding for the Disabled in Wallington. Two memorable and proactive years full of fun, fellowship and service above self. 11 President Kevin Carey A year in office of achievement and challenge. A Rotary Club exists to serve its local and broader community through the five avenues of service. It has long been said that our Rotary Club punches well above its weight. The year began with full coffers provided by the very successful 2014 Queenscliffe Bricks exhibition. Club Service makes the club operate. We all contribute, from the President down. Our Secretary with correspondence and minutes, the Treasurer, all things financial, the Sergeant for order and entertainment. We have embraced social media. Director Peter not satisfied with his excellent Web Page has us on Face Book with links to the Web Page. Community Service, rolling up the sleeves going out there and doing. Fund raising provides us with the opportunity and the revenue to meet our service objectives. Our most successful fund raising activity is the annual LEGO exhibition. Ballarat South Car Raffle and the Point Lonsdale Market BBQ are also significant contributors. These funds provide opportunities to contribute to numerous community causes. Shared ventures with the Point Lonsdale Primary School, the Queenscliff Kinder, The Borough of Queenscliffe, the St Leonards Men s Shed, YMCA Camp Wyuna and the Christmas Tree Committee are local organisations with which we have been venture partners. International Service: Rotarians humanitarian reach around the world. Rotary Foundation, the Foundation of achievement. Collective contributions to eliminate disease and meet disaster relief and build better communities. We are generous contributors to the Foundation, for example Polio Plus and Rotary International humanitarian appeals, and the Ebola epidemic in West Africa through RAWCS and the Rotary Club of Monrovia Liberia. The local Board Riders Club elected to use Rotary as the conduit for funds raised for their Vanuatu Cyclone Pam relief effort. The list goes on: Interplast, Romac, Shelter Box, Disaster Aid Australia and the Wheel Chair Foundation received donations. New Generation: Involving our youth and young adults in leadership development activities through community and international projects. We still provide readers to our community new born and in the second year of assistance to the Queenscliff Kinder. The annual Frank Mountford Memorial Trophy award for literacy is an ongoing essay challenge for year 5/6 students. As hard as we tried we could not provide a candidate for this year s RYLA Seminar. Registered and financed for 2, but for personal reasons both had to withdraw. Out of disappointment comes success. P.P Rob Iser received a request we could not reject. Would you like to sponsor me as an outgoing Exchange Student? Accept: embrace a rewarding association with delight. The misfortunes that led to the temporary closure of our meeting venue Lombardy s presented immediate and longer term challenges. The availability of the Queenscliff Bowling Club was made known and the move has worked well. Membership is always a challenge. Started the year with 15. On the 30 th. August our nonagenarian member, Eddy Vandergraaff went to sleep, never to wake. A wonderful person remembered and missed. Long standing Rotarians Fay and Peter Reinbach elected to retire and resignations were received from two members. The achievements and challenges. It has been a year of both and looking back I feel proud of what you, our Club members have achieved. In closing I would like to thank collectively all of you for the support given and confidence shown in me for the year just ended.
