Grave robbers defy belief George Newby helped many people in Te Awamutu area during his life sadly in death some lowlife is helping himself/herself to the plants on his grave. The theft of two lavender plants last week from the planting pot cemented to his headstone at Te Awamutu Cemetery is the third theft the last two just weeks apart. Mr Newby s wife Heather and daughter Joy say he was a good husband and father, who would ferry the elderly to hospital or to see the doctor. He was always doing something for someone who needed help, recalls his daughter. Mr Newby lived a good and full life, before he passed away suddenly from a heart attack just over two years ago, aged 75. The couple had four children, but Joy is the only one living in this area. She visits her father s grave every week (with her partner, William Apeldoorn). This is despite the fact that she is in a wheelchair something which she says was caused by Aspartame poisoning. Dad was a wonderful person and we have only happy memories of him, she says. Whoever is stealing the mementos we place on his headstone is desecrating his memory. It makes me angry. Mum, who turned 80 recently, is just absolutely devastated that someone would show such a lack of respect. Mrs Newby says: George does not deserve this, he did so much for so many people. I think it is disgusting. I too was disgusted when Joy Newby wrote a Letter to the Editor to me a few weeks ago, telling of the theft of the lavender plants and instead, I turned it into a front page briefly article. Alphra Lavender contacted Joy to kindly donate two more plants, which were the ones stolen last week. Dad loved his herb garden and that s why we first planted the lavender a few weeks back, to commemorate the second anniversary of his passing. The original theft was of an artificial arrangement, featuring his favourite chilli. Joy says following the front page article, she has noticed a surge in the number of people checking their loves ones headstones and placing flowers on or alongside them. This (grave and headstone) is our link to someone we loved dearly. We just want to be TC060809GJ01 allowed to honour his memory, without someone stealing that away. DISTRAUGHT: Joy Newby at her father s grave, with an empty planter on top of the headstone. Kidnapper arrested by AOS Hamilton detectives and the Armed Offenders Squad were successful in apprehending their man in Te Awamutu yesterday morning after cordoning off two houses in the town. The man was wanted in relation to the kidnapping of a woman in Hamilton last week. AOS cordoned off a Te Tomo Street property at about 6.30am, with more officers protecting a back entrance on Puniu Road, and commenced voice appeals and also utilised distractions to gain entry to a garage on the property. A stolen vehicle being sought was recovered but the wanted man did not appear. Subsequent information lead Police to a Raeburn Street address, and once again the BY GRANT JOHNSTON property was cordoned and a voice appeal commenced. The wanted man gave himself up without further incident and was arrested. At the time of going to print the 32-year-old Aucklander was due to appear in hamilton District Court charged with kidnapping, assault and theft of a vehicle AA Fireworks = scared dogs Plan ahead and get your dog ready for fireworks season with VetEnt Desensitisation is a method used to reduce or eliminate frightened behaviour in dogs when they hear firework noises. The Federation s first concert, featuring students from the music department of Waikato University, was a resounding success. Cello and piano students played modern and classical pieces, followed by Katherine Austin, head of the department, playing Chopin to round off the concert. What a delightful way to pass a winter Sunday afternoon, enjoying professional standard performances from the cream of our musical talent, without the need to travel to Hamilton. The attendance of some 36 persons at the concert confirms that others are in agreement with my sentiments. I look forward to further concerts in this new series. PHILIP WOODS Marae gate recovered Thank you for publishing the letter you headlined Gate theft offensive. It is with pleasure we can say the gate to Te Taumata Marae was found and recovered at Wharepapa South on the weekend. We can only presume the gate was removed as a prank much like smashing someone s letter box is a prank. There s some strange folk out there! Kia tupato (beware) whoever you were. You trod on waahi tapu, and that can have consequences beyond the mere theft of property. I won t hurt you. You will only hurt yourself. KEN KIRI HEKE Te Taumata ki Parawera Is waste a criminal offence? Is undefendable waste of tax payer money a criminal offence? Should the likes of Mr English be prosecuted? Perhaps not, but clearly the allowances such ministers are taking advantage of must go. How offended is the average wage earner to know that ministers, on top of already massive salary and benefits, get more than we do a year just to fund their own house? Talking of criminal waste how about the referendum? At high school we teach how to do surveys, and spend time explaining that loaded questions will skew results and cannot be counted towards a genuine survey. That instantly makes our current referendum invalid. Add in that smacking is not in fact criminalised in current legislation and the entire referendum is a total joke. Could not even the most simple minded among us see past their personal opinions on smacking and think just where else nine million dollars could have been spent? P. CORBETT Reg and Margaret Stokes only intended to have a look around Rosehill Lifestyle Village to see what it was like. But we fell in love with it straight away and decided this is where we want to live. So we have sold our house and are now looking forward in great anticipation to the completion of our home in this delightful village. The Stokes have lived in Te Awamutu for the past 41 years and say they wouldn t consider living anywhere else. We had a farm in Taumarunui originally and when we sold that we looked for a nice place to live. We thought Te Awamutu was lovely and are very happy to stay here. Our three bedroom home will be finished in November and we believe it will be well worth waiting for. We are open every day Glen Eagles Drive, Te Awamutu Phone: Mobile: till 4.00pm. 3 Musical talent shines BY CATHY ASPLIN Watch this space should be he message taken from a ombined music day staged at Te wamutu Intermediate on onday. While most of the students ttending from around the Waiato were only 12 or 13, such was he talent on show that many are ure to appear in music compeitions and on larger stages in ears to come. Young musicians from eight ntermediate and Middle Schools n Hamilton, Cambridge, Morinsville and Matamata joined their Te Awamutu counterparts for the creative day of learning. Workshops included songwriting, choral work, rock bands, drumming and orchestral work. Late in the afternoon the groups performances showcased what they had learned from their tutors (music teachers from the schools involved), while a combined rendition of We Are The World provided a fitting finale. Music created during the day is being compiled onto a CD for the schools to enjoy - and possibly for teachers to say in years to come that they recorded the beginning of a successful music career. Host teacher Sue Germann from Te Awamutu Intermediate says the combined music day was one of four being run in conjunction with Arts Waikato. In term one a visual arts day was staged at Maeroa Intermediate, in term two a dance workshop was held at Peachgrove Intermediate and next term a drama day will he hosted by Matamata Intermediate. Each provides a creative outlet for students who have shown ability in that area. WHY NOT TRY TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, ARE YOUR MUSCLES STIFF, GIVING YOU UNWANTED ACHES AND PAIN? 5 Looking to build on Cassino connection Te Awamutu may twin town with sexy Italian BY ALISTAIR KERR Deputy Mayor Peter Lee utlined his vision for the estabishment of a twin town relationhip between Te Awamutu and assino in Italy, at the recent nnual luncheon of the Te Awautu branch of the King s Empire eterans. The concept received unanious support from the 80 people resent. Mr Lee said his motivation for his project was that it would be esirable to build on the experince gained through the already uccessful relationship between ambridge and the town of Le uesnoy in France. This has been so successful, ecause, even today, after 91 years he citizens of Le Quesnoy regard he New Zealand troops as iberators. They especially appreciate the act that, to free the town in World ar One, rather than by destroyng it by a bombardment the New ealanders mounted an infantry ttack, scaling the medieval alls. As a result, no civilians ere killed. Today, New Zealand has a pecial place in the hearts of the eople of Le Quesnoy. Many street ames connect with our country nd it is probably the only French own in which Anzac Day is egularly celebrated. Mr Lee feels that a somewhat imilar situation exists between assino and Te Awamutu in hich a World War Two link ould be recognised. TC060809SP05 WAIPA Deputy Mayor Peter Lee is leading the charge to recognise Te Awamutu s World War Two links with Cassino in Italy. He said the time was ripe now while so many Cassino veterans still lived in our district. It would need to start with a Mayor-to- Mayor contact. Then there would be a Council-to-Council contact supported by the respective Embassies in both countries. But the success of the proposal would eventually depend on the interest, involvement and support of our town s community. Mr Lee thinks that this could possibly be the first such Italy-New Zealand exchange. What could possibly emerge from such a proposal? Present and future generations will be made aware and kept aware of the sacrifices made by the World War Two men at the important and tragic battle of Cassino. The interchange of special tour groups of visitors from both towns will build an important inter-cultural relationship - something to be encouraged in this shrinking world. Any casual visitors from Te Awamutu would, if the experiences of previous groups is anything to go by, receive a special welcome in Cassino. Homehosting could be possible. No doubt, local travel agents will support the business such an interchange would generate. Mr Lee said that he was passionate about promoting the project and that he would drive it wherever he could. As an indication of local involvement at Cassino, these men, as far as is known still live in and around the district: Colin Murray, Norm Harris, Harry Hopping, Peter Brown, Alan Ambury, Roger Swarbrick, Bob O Brien, Jack Melrose, Richard Atkins, Keith Smith, Ray Hancock, Selwyn Phillips, Tom Bowe, Bob Sylvester. No doubt there are more, not yet reported, and the RSA would be very grateful to have their names. BY DEAN TAYLOR About 15 years ago Te Awamutu College careers advisor Christine Dickson was hosted by New Zealand s armed forces to promote careers in the military. Recently she went back and found things have changed. Over four days at the end of last school term she was part of a team of 45 advisors selected to be hosted by the armed forces, and this time she sees real benefits for young people looking for careers. Mrs Dickson says the difference was the more caring atti- tude she detected within the services and the professionalism of their career structures. She says staff retention is high within the forces, and indication that they are in fact a good employer, and she could see many great opportunities for students at Te Awamutu College. Mrs Dickson says the four days was no picnic. The advisors gathered at Whenuapai Air Force Base for a tour of facilities, then bunked down with the troops early for a 6.15am rise for 6.30 breakfast. The group was bussed to Devonport Naval Base for a tour of the Canterbury and the new patrol boats. Mrs Dickson caught up with locals Julie Fitzell, a senior officer aboard the Canterbury, and Matthew Hudson, who left school last year. Advisors were shown the trades available with the Navy, then were taken on a tour of Devonport s Officer Training School. Mrs Dickson admits she was highly impressed. On return to Whenuapai the team was loaded onto a Hercules for a no frills flight to Ohakea Air Force Base. Continued page 9. 7 Novice bird breeder chirping like champion after National Show TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, BY GRANT JOHNSTON Clive Strickett achieved something in is first year of showing birds seriously hat most enthusiasts don t manage in ears of trying a national award. Mr Strickett was among a number of Te wamutu Bird Club members who enjoyed uccess at the New Zealand National Bird how in Waitara, at which 1600 birds were enched. His young Lizard canary won the verall ribbon and medal for Best Lizard at he show, which was an open category. It also picked up the award for Best urrent Year, Current Ring (owner bred). Mr Strickett says he is indebted to Te wamutu Bird Club stalwart, Joy Allen nd fellow member Faye Brooks (of Ngauawahia), who unselfishly supplied him ith the male and female parent birds espectively. They certainly make a good family r Strickett has showed the five Lizards his year at district shows and enjoyed lenty of success. So he was hopeful of collecting somehing at the National Show, but what appened exceeded all expectations. Ian MacPherson (another Te Awautu Bird Club stalwart and leading judge) told me that people can go to National Shows for many years, without collecting a special (note of encouragement on the cage). He said what I had achieved at my first National Show was stunning. The winning bird takes after its mother in colouring (silver, grey), but it is the quality of the markings (which resemble a lizard s skin) that decides the issue. Mr Strickett also collected a runner up placing in Novice Norwich and other placings. He became a member of Te Awamutu Bird Club three years ago, after moving to Pirongia from Auckland the year before. He raced pigeons for many years and is a life member of Auckland Racing Pigeon Federation. Mr MacPherson was in the action himself taking away the award for Best TC060809GJ02 FEATHERED FRIEND: Clive Strickett with his award winning Lizard canary. 9 Tea Hour Moo Two welcome TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, Stonegrill Dining Stonegrill offers a unique interactive dining experience where diners meals are served cooking at the table on super-heated natural volcanic stones. These specially selected stones are heated to 400oC in a purpose built stone grill oven. JOSH EASBY PHOTO TE AWAMUTU welcome as published in Welcome to New Zealand by Hurricane Press. BY DEAN TAYLOR. A couple of recent arrivals cross the Te Awamutu Courier ditorial desk have us wondering ow others see our town. Author Josh Easby culminated three month, 15,000km New ealand summer roadtrip with a ew book Welcome to New Zealand supposedly chronicling his earch for our best welcome sign. He photographed 400 signs, and ublished 350 including Te wamutu. Now while Te awamutu wasn t entioned in his Top 10 (Taihape, aimate, Gore, Whangamomona, aipu, Dannevirke, Glenorchy, auraki Plains, Amberley and nvercargill) the image did warant a full page. Is the sign that good, or did Mr asby like the fact our welcome ign was in a paddock of cows? The season covers the period from August 15 to November 30 in all parts of New Zealand except the West Coast of the South Island. People can face hefty fines if they are caught fishing out of season or if they use illegal equipment. Fishing is allowed between 5am and 8pm from the start of the season, and then from 6am to 9pm when New Zealand daylight saving time comes into effect, says Mr Annandale. The whitebait regulations haven t changed since 1994, but everyone needs to be aware of the rules relating to net size, where they can actually fish on the riverbank and the need for fishers to stay within 10 metres of their set net at all times. Mr Annandale says anyone contemplating going out to catch whitebait for the first time should particularly take the time to become familiar with the rules - or face the consequences. Information is available at any Department of Conservation office, while copies of the regulations can be obtained from any Bennetts or Government bookshops or more details are available from the website Offences against the whitebait regulations carry a fine of up to $5000. DOC staff will undertake random compliance patrols during the whitebait season and it would be a shame if we had to seize illegal equipment, or equipment that is being used illegally. Fishers must remove their nets and screens from the water when they finish fishing each day. We also acknowledge all those fishers who do comply with the whitebait fishing regulations. says Mr Annandale. Computer Aid has celebrated 10 years in business (under the current owner) by becoming an Apple authorised reseller. Managing Director Tim Sullivan says the Apple range of MacBooks, imacs and ipods has been a great addition to the Computer Aid stable. MacBooks and imacs are favoured by people working in graphic design and ipods remain hugely popular with a wide crosssection of the community. The store still stocks a wide range of PC s laptops, accessories and IT products, while a large service centre operates behind the retail area. Computer Aid has now been operating in Te Awamutu for 17 years, 11 of those on the current site in Sloane Street. Mr Sullivan took over the business in 1999 and has revamped the store twice during that time. In 2003 a second Computer Aid store was opened in Cambridge, while the local business was split in two in 2005, with phones and accessories shifted to the First Mobile store on Alexandra Street. In all 10 staff are employed to run the three stores. At Computer Aid Te Awamutu Rob Stewart is in charge of sales, while Richard Coe, Darryl Hardie and Wes Meyer are the three technicians in the service centre. Mr Sullivan says the business strives to provide the best solution for their clients needs and backs that with valuable advice and servicing. The Davies describe the 10 month project as an amazing journey, minor hiccups and all. For the clients the journey started much earlier - a couple of years in fact - when they began discussions with architect Tim Gisler and his associates and began accumulating the bits and pieces that they wanted to go in their new home. For Davies Construction Services it was an honour to be selected to turn that planning and dreaming in an award winning reality. DREAM TO REALITY Home owners Allan and Janeen Mockford are living in their dream house that came true. They are rapt that Davies Construction Services was able to work with architect Tim Gisler and not only build, but exceed, their vision of their new family home. The brief we gave our architect was for a contemporary, single levelled, glass filled home that would take in our amazing views, grow with our family from toddlers to teenagers, and be a place that our children would want to bring friends home to. It also needed to be functional enough for us as parents to feel like we also had our own space. We effectively designed it like the letter Y. The kids wing includes bedrooms, bathroom, pool and games room. A large open plan living area/dining/kitchen with separate office is in the middle, and our wing is in the opposite direction including the formal lounge, master bedroom/ ensuite, and guest bedroom/ ensuite. The garaging is the base of the Y with internal access through the laundry. The Resene colour scheme Waikato Region is neutral in the living area and hallways with colour in the bedrooms. Competing in the year cruiser class, the Te Awamutu BMX stalwart overshot the first 8.5 metre double jump in heat two, catapulting over the handlebars dislocating his shoulder and breaking his clavicle. After being patched up by the paramedics, McOnie insisted he stayed trackside to support the rest of the Kiwis. There was no way I was going to hospital, McOnie told the Courier. I didn t go all that way to sit in hospital. Back home, the plasterer by trade, says there is a strong possibility the injury will require surgery. McOnie was up against the World s best in his age group s qualifying mottos. He finished fifth in heat one, after being squeezed out at the first corner, then had to put it all on the line in heat two to gain sufficient points to progress. He made a fantastic start to heat two, only to crash out of contention. Marist win seals semi final spot Te Awamutu Marist have played their way into a Waikato second division rugby semi final after a hard fought 6-3 quarter final win over Ngaruawahia at Marist Park on Saturday. The Murray Gane Plumbing sponsored side lifted their game from last week s loss in wet and muddy conditions and thoroughly deserved their win. Coach Shane Crutchley had his team firing for this match and their defensive effort was huge. Marist were on the scoreboard after 10 minutes through a Marty Rogers penalty. The visitors replied after 18 minutes to tie the game up at 3-all. Rogers kicked his second penalty on halftime to take the lead back for Marist and take his points tally for the season to 117. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the heavy ground in the second half, but good defence held them out. Ngaruawahia used their bench to better effect and the fresh legs put pressure on the Marist line. The visitors had a penalty attempt on fulltime to draw the game, but missed to the cheer of a good sized crowd. The home team s forward pack worked well as a unit and put pressure on the visitors scrum. Backs to stand out were Rogers and fullback Logan McLaughlin. Prop Eugene Haami was named Wooly s Restaurant and Bar player of the day. Marist are away to top seeded team Hamilton Old Boys this Saturday and keen to avenge the first round loss to this team. Ryan had been training with the New Zealand high performance team prior to the World Championships and is pictured relaxing with them in the pits before their elite racing. BY COLIN THORSEN Te Awamutu BMX riders did hemselves proud at the World hampionships in Adelaide the ajority of them dominating heir mottos and progressing to uarter and semi-finals. Dual medal winner Rebecca etch, who featured in last hursday s Courier, was the ndoubted star and Codi Merito eturned home with a World No. 4 late from the 12 year boys 24 nch cruiser bike class. New Zealand junior developent coach, Malcolm McOnie of e Awamutu is optimistic that the ountry s junior riders can ecome a dominant world force in he sport. Our Kiwi riders all dominted their heats but once they eached the business end of the ompetition, the European and merican riders more accusomed to riding at world class evel gained a decisive edge. I m confident, given better racks and more international xposure, our juniors can bridge hat gap. Of the 220 New Zealand riders acing at the worlds, 52 brought ome Top 8 World plates four f which were World No. 1s. Merito was eliminated in the 2 year boys quarter-final after aving won two of his three ottos. Three days later he hoped nto his 24 inch cruiser, progressed to the final eight and finished up World No. 4. Ryan Lewis of Pirongia, who had been invited into the New Zealand High Performance preworlds camp, was unlucky not to make the 14 year boys final. He was either first or second in his three mottos, then won his quarter final dominating the track and beating the eventual world champion. His NZ high performance coach, Ken Calls tipped Lewis to be a finalist and potential medallist. Sadly, just when he looked likely to repay his coach s faith in him, the talented Te Awamutu club member crashed out in the semi-final attempting to negotiate the 9.5 metre double jump. Josh Smith rode outstandingly to make the semi-final the only New Zealand 11 year boy to do so in the 64 strong field, including riders from Japan, US, Australia, France and South Africa. He recorded two wins and a second in the qualifying mottos, then rocketed from last to fourth in his quarter final to make the semi-finals, contested in two gates of eight. He bowed out in the semis, finishing eighth. Smith showed the benefits of his recent test match experience racing for New Zealand Mighty 11 s against their Australian counterparts. It is interesting to note that three of the Australian Mighty 11 s team made the 11 year boys final at the Worlds, finishing first, second and fifth. Smith made the semi-finals and his NZ Mighty 11 s captain Liam Perry made the 12 year boys final. Former New Zealand Mighty 11 s captain, Te Awamutu s Cody Hobbs cleaned up his mottos into the 14 year boys elimination heats. Drawn in the same quarter final as Ryan Lewis, Hobbs made a mighty start to lead early but tragically slipped at the first corner, ending up fifth and being eliminated with only the top four progressing. Cameron Petch drew an exceptionally tough qualifying group, including the World No. 1, after a quick change from rugby boots to BMX helmet having flown into the event late after staying home to trial for the Waikato Roller Mills representative rugby team (in which he succeeded, see page 15). He did himself proud, despite not venturing past his mottos. Clay Merito did not progress past the tough 10 year boys qualifying mottos, while younger brother Cooper made the six and under quarter finals. Pirongia s Barry brothers, Kane and Todd, featured prominently in their respective qualifying heats before being eliminated in the semi-finals. Going into the match lying second on the table, Te Awamutu were keen to ensure this placing remained secure with a win. They were thankful that the previous day s rain had dissipated. The ground at Strathwell Park was still soft, but it was a fine day for soccer. Te Awamutu player of the day, Janis James again kept her run for the golden boot award alive, to help her team to a 1-1 half time share of the scoreboard. The second half was less clearcut than the scoreline might indicate, but telling breakaways and well placed long balls by Tokoroa saw them find the net on three more occasions. Players of note were Tracey Reekers in the mid field and Kerry Vickers on right wing, who were consistent in covering plenty of ground and putting pressure on the Tokoroa defence. Coach Craig Crockett was sure the two weeks without games was a factor, but was gutted to come away with no points. The team will need to lift to a higher level when they meet top of the table Unicol B at Anchor Park this Sunday at 11am.
