1 India Celebrates its Independence day on August 15 every year. Independence Day is the great day for Indian people as India got freedom on this day in 1947from the British rule after 200 years of colonial rule. On this day, Indians pay homage to those who fought for our freedom. BACKGROUND The struggle for India's Independence began in 1857 with the Sepoy of Mutiny in Meerut. Later, in the 20th century, the Indian National Congress and other political organizations, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, launched a countrywide independence movement. India gained its independence on 15th of August in the year 1947 after enormous sacrifices by numerous freedom fighters. Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad, Sukhdev, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Lala Lajpat Rai Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak, Chandra Shekhar Azad, are some of the legends who made innumerable sacrifices to attain independence from the British rule. The great non-cooperation movement started by Mahatma Gandhi (who is lovingly known as Bapu) made a remarkable difference in the freedom struggle. This movement charted a path for our freedom struggle and was a prominently responsible for bringing British rule to an end, after 200 long years. Happy Independence Day In the midnight of 15th August, 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru announced the Independence of India by reading out his famous speech known as Tryst with destiny. He said that after long years of slavery, it is the time when we redeem our pledge with the end of our ill fortune. He became the first Indian Prime Minister on 17th of August, 1947 and raised the National Flag at Red Fort near Lahore Gate in Delhi. The struggle for independence strugglebrought Indians together which led to emergence of strong nation - Bharat. Bharat is a land of unity in Diversity where people with different religions, cultures, traditions stay together. We should feel pride in taking an oath to be loyal & patriotic and thrive for a strong nation. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then You Win. - Mahatma Gandhi
