3 Your invitation to partner with Australia s largest affordable housing conference We are thrilled to stage the eleventh National Housing Conference, NHC 2019 Housing future communities, in the beautiful city of Darwin the first time the Conference has been to the Territory. We invite your organisation to partner with the Conference and champion the key national forum on social and affordable housing. The National Housing Conference has been staged in partnership between state and territory governments, and AHURI for 20 years. Convened every two years and attracting more than 1000 delegates, it is the largest housing conference in Australasia. It is the place where international and local evidence, best practice and policy come together to address challenges and develop the future landscape of housing in Australia. and deep cultural factors that must be considered to develop lasting solutions for Aboriginal communities. We have also taken advantage of the beautiful August weather in Darwin. 4 Conference Convenor The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) is a national independent research network with an expert notfor-profit research management company, AHURI Limited at its centre. Our mission is to inform and impact better housing, homelessness, cities and related urban outcomes through the delivery and dissemination of relevant and authoritative research. Through our national network of university research partners, we undertake research on priority policy issues and through active engagement, AHURI s work informs the policies and practices of governments and the housing and urban development industries and stimulates debate in the broader Australian community. Together with the Northern Territory Department of Housing and Community Development, AHURI is thrilled to host the National Housing Conference 2019 Housing future communities in Darwin. Conference Host The Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development is responsible for providing key services to Territorians, particularly to those living in remote communities and the disadvantaged. This includes providing services and support for urban and remote housing, homelessness, town camps, local government and interpreting services. The department is committed to improving access to housing, reducing overcrowding, increasing community development and local decision making and providing governance support to councils and regional communities. The department manages more than 12,500 dwellings across the Northern Territory s 1.35 million square kilometres. In partnership with government and non-government agencies, the department strives to: provide accommodation pathways and housing options for Territorians in need, Support the Specialist Homeless Services sector to deliver accommodation and support services to Territorians who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, build stronger regions and communities through effective local government, deliver and coordinate essential infrastructure projects and services to remote communities, provide interpreting and translating services to support members of our community who speak a language other than English. 2 National Housing Conference 2019
