4 THE OPPORTUNITY Adelaide s Chinatown has been an important feature of the city s lifestyle since the 1970s following an influx of Asian migrants and the growth of Asian food shops and cafes in the area. It is now centred on Moonta Street, which features pagoda style roofs, red lanterns, restaurants and grocery stores. This Chinatown plaza is being re-developed and the adjacent Adelaide Central Market is slotted for a major upgrade after it returns to the control of the Adelaide City Council in The plans for Chinatown and the complimentary upgrade of the Central Market offer a great opportunity to cement South Australia s tourism, trade and cultural ties with China. South Australia s Chinese community is 50,000 people strong. It s a very important part of our diverse multicultural society. South Australia welcomes 38,000 Chinese tourists each year, pumping $240 million into our visitor economy. China is also our biggest market for international students, providing our biggest service export by contributing more than $1 billion to the State economy every year. Chinatown is a much loved feature in the heart of Adelaide city

5 THE STATE LIBERAL S PLAN Providing $500,000 for a permanent cover of Moonta Street will not only protect preexisting visitors but will drive more traffic there during the winter months If elected in March 2018, a Marshall Liberal Government will support the major re-development of Chinatown by providing $500,000 for a permanent cover for Moonta Street. Everyone visiting Chinatown and the Central market will benefit from protecting this vibrant strip from the weather. It s important that we continue to recognise the Chinese community s significant contribution to South Australia and support for re-developing Chinatown does just that. The Chinatown precinct represents a little slice of home for our thousands of Chinese tourists and students and ensuring the area is an even greater visitor experience will make them feel even more welcome.
