1 Document owner TfNSW Wayfinding Program recommendations pack City and South East Light Rail (CSELR) Version 1.7 Draft for discussion TfNSW Customer Services Division Wayfinding Program

2 Introduction Background and introduction Background The NSW public transport system is made up of a network of train stations, bus stops, ferry wharves and light rail stops. Consistent use of an agreed name for every location is fundamental to both the customer service offering and operation of the public transport system. Within TfNSW, the Customer Services Division is responsible for determining names for all public transport locations, including: - interchanges - train stations - bus stops - ferry wharves - light rail stops - metro stations TfNSW s rules for naming stops are described in the Naming Guideline and Customer Information Business Rules documents, available through Customer Services Division. Why names matter For customers, the name of a station, stop or wharf is the key to navigation. It is the first step in planning a trip, or in understanding how they can use public transport to complete a journey. s help them to understand where they are when travelling on the public transport system, and to successfully plan trips and connections. s must always be consistent, whether a customer sees them in the built environment, onboard, in printed materials or online. This document This document is an early draft for key stakeholder review. Your feedback is welcome. Please contact your usual TfNSW point of contact with any comments or questions. Next steps Following key stakeholder review, TfNSW will seek endorsement of these recommendations through the Geographical s Board (GNB) process. Page 2

13 Central explained Customer Journey through Central Analysis of customer journey to assist with stop naming Background The naming of the new light rail stop located along Chalmers Street at Central Station have need to take into consideration the challenges that stop naming present within a complex navigational environment. As a large transport interchange, Central Station differs from other interchange environments such as Circular Quay, Town Hall and Wynyard. Options Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Option 4 Grand Concourse - South Concourse Grand Concourse - Chalmers Street Eddy Avenue - Chalmers Street Eddy Avenue - South Concourse The Wayfinding implication of two light rail stops on customer journeys through Central Station needs to be addressed in the naming of the stops. Analysis Option 5 Central North - Central South Option 6 Platform 26 - Platform 27 Option 7 Stop 1 - Stop 2 The name of a station, stop or wharf is the key to navigation. Option 8 Grand - Chalmers A name represents the first step in trip planning and assists in planning connections through public transport modes. Recommendation Option 9 Exit 2 - Exit 6 Option 10 Inner West - City and South East Option 11 L? - L? (with directional arrows) Maintaining Central as the primary name for both light rail stops ensures that a customer travelling to Central by light rail is aware that there is only one light rail stop at Central where they will be able to disembark. Option 12 Option 13 L1 - L2 and L3 L1 Inner West - L2 L3 City and South East The inclusion of a secondary name for each stop assists customers in navigating the Central interchange and is similar to the way in which platforms are identified by number, and terminals are identified at airports. Secondary name considerations Secondary name recommendation It is proposed to rename both stops with the primary name Central and the distinguishing secondary names highlighted above. The options set out below represent the thought process in proposing suitable secondary names for the light rail stops at Central. These options represent existing Wayfinding terminology used within Central Station as well as examining the nature of the light rail stops, as similar to station platforms. Page 13

30 Associated structures Naming Background There are associated structures and facilities required for access and the operation of the CSELR. These include: Stabling Yard for light rail vehicles Overhead pedestrian footbridge on Anzac Parade The naming of these presents an opportunity to acknowledge local history and culture as well as citizens who have made significant contributions. Naming criteria The name of a stop is the key to navigation as it is the first step in planning a trip, or in understanding how customers can use public transport to complete a journey. The naming of associated structures and facilities is secondary and therefore creates an opportunity to reference names or historical features that may not follow the specific naming criteria that the GNB requires for the naming of light rail stops. Naming Process The process for naming these is proposed to be carried out in consultation with local government, the Aboriginal community and other local community groups and representatives. Next steps Following stakeholder review, TfNSW will seek endorsement of these recommendations. The naming of these structures occurs as a concurrent exercise that may not require approval through the GNB and is therefore not linked to the approval process and time requirements for the light rail stops. Page 30

The light rail rolling stock will be stabled there for maintenance and at times when there are no timetabled light rail services (i.e. overnight). Aboriginal artefacts were revealed during construction and the discovery of these artefacts reinforces the significance of Aboriginal history in this area. This naming of the stabling yard with a name of Aboriginal significance presents an opportunity to acknowledge and increase awareness of the Aboriginal history of this place. The recommended Aboriginal name for the stabling yard will be proposed as a result of a consultation process undertaken with the Aboriginal community. No alternate options are being considered.
