1 New Zealand Marine Protected s (MPAs) New Zealand has 38 Type 1 MPAs and 16 Type 2 MPAs as at 10 June Type 1 MPAs are fully protected marine reserves. Type 2 MPAs include areas that are partially protected. The areas may not have been ablished or managed with the primary purpose of biodiversity protection. Type 2 MPAs include fisheries closure areas, mātaitai, marine parks and cable and pipeline protection zones. Where monitoring reveals that management tools are not adequately protecting the area, the management tools for that MPA will need to be reviewed. The agency responsible for administrating the corresponding piece of legislation for a particular MPA is primarily responsible for managing, enforcing and monitoring that MPA. The nature of this monitoring varies between MPAs, depending on each MPAs purpose.
