4 Keynote Speakers Victoria Brazil Victoria is a Senior Staff Specialist at Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital, where she has worked in clinical emergency medicine practice, and at the coalface of teaching, since Dr Brazil is also an Associate Professor within the School of Medicine at Bond University on the Gold Coast, where she is Theme Lead for Doctor as Practitioner. She is a previous Fulbright scholar (2002) and received the ACEM Teaching Excellence award in Victoria s interests in technology for medical education include simulation and scenario based learning, and modest contributions on Twitter...@Socratic_EM. Some of the latter are inadvertently made by her children playing on her ipad. Mike Cadogan Emergency Physician, sports doctor and social media tragic. Mike spends his spare time writing medical textbooks and devising numerous medical education resources. He is the founder of and medical editor for the medical blog Life in the Fast Lane, and founder of the Global Medical Education Project, imeducate and HealthEngine. Simon Carley Simon Carley is Professor of Emergency Medicine in Manchester, England. He is an active clinician at Manchester Royal Infirmary and the Royal Manchester Children s Hospital. He has published over 100 papers in clinical journals with research interests in disaster medicine, diagnostics, evidence base medicine and medical education. He has additional roles as associate editor of the Emergency Medicine Journal, as a General Medical Council associate in education, as director of the foundation training program in central Manchester and a co-lead for the MSc in Emergency Medicine at Manchester Metropolitan University. As a co-founder and developer of the BestBets and St.Emlyn s websites he has integrated web based learning into all levels of EM education. He developed the StEmlyns Blog to share learning across the globe in the true spirit of #FOAM. Simon Finfer Simon Finfer is a Senior Staff Specialist in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, a Conjoint Professor at the University of Sydney and a Professorial Fellow in the Division of Critical Care and Trauma at The George Institute for Global Health. At Royal North Shore, Professor Finfer is responsible for the intensive care unit s clinical research program and was a founder member of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group. A former Chair of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group, Professor Finfer led the two largest ICU-based clinical trials conducted anywhere in the world to date. He has published over 100 scientific papers, many in the highest profile journals in the world. He is a much sought after international speaker and has delivered over 100 presentations at international conferences. His research has resulted in changes to treatment recommendations by many national and international bodies including the US Food & Drug Administration, American Diabetes Association, American College of Physicians and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. He is currently a guest editor for the New England Journal of Medicine and an editor of the Oxford Textbook of Critical Care. Anthony Holley Anthony is a dual qualified Intensivist and Emergency Physician, working as a full time staff specialist at Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital. He is also the supervisor of intensive care training at RBWH and is a senior lecturer with the University of Queensland Medical School. Anthony has authored/co-authored more than twenty five peer reviewed papers and is the recipient of several study grants. He serves as an intensive care representative for the National Blood Authority Critical Care Expert Group. Anthony is currently the Queensland Chairman for ANZICS. His teaching interests include the Early Management of Severe Trauma and Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care. Anthony is also a serving officer in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve and has deployed overseas on a number of occasions including to Bougainville, East Timor, The South Pacific, Asia, The Persian Gulf and most recently to Afghanistan. Joe Lex Dr Joe Lex started in Emergency Medicine in 1967 as an Army medic with the 25th Infantry Tropic Lightning Division in Vietnam. He spent several years as an Emergency Medicine Technician and Certified Emergency Nurse before beginning Medical School at age 35. After an Emergency Medicine residency, he was a community pit doc for 14 years before joining the staff at Temple University in Philadelphia. While still practicing in the community, he was appointed Chair of Education for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. 4 social media and critical care 2013 conference

5 The AAEM honored him by renaming the Educator of the Year award the Joe Lex Award. Over the past 10 years, he has been an invited speaker at more than 350 conferences regionally, nationally, and internationally. He has also been a featured speaker on Audio- Digest Emergency Medicine, Practical Reviews in Emergency Medicine, and Emergency Medicine Reviews and Perspectives (EMRAP). His free website, Free Emergency Talks, has helped educate emergency medicine practitioners around the world. He belongs to Emergency Medicine organisations on 4 continents, is an honorary member of Sociedad Argentina de Emergencias and Polskie Towarzystwo Medycyny Ratunkowej, and a founding member of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the African Federation for Emergency Medicine. He still works three clinical shifts weekly in a busy inner-city Emergency Department - 3 pm to 11 pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. After more than 45 years in Emergency Medicine, he s still not sure what his next step will be. John A Myburgh Professor Myburgh is Professor of Critical Care at the Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales; Director of the Division of Critical Care and Trauma at the George Institute for International Health and senior intensive care physician at the St George Hospital, Sydney. He holds honorary professorial appointments at University of Sydney and Monash University School of Public Health. He has an extensive research track record over 20 years and is regarded as a national and international expert in catecholamine neurophysiology and pharmacology, trials of clinical management of traumatic brain injury and in the development and co-ordination of multi-centred clinical studies in Intensive Care Medicine. He is a Foundation Member and Immediate Past-Chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group. He was instrumental in the establishment of the ANZIC Research Centre at the Monash University School of Public Health. His list of publications include over 130 refereed research publications (including 7 papers in the New England Journal of Medicine) and 19 book chapters. He has received over $35M in grant funding including 15 NHMRC project grants, an NHMRC enabling grant, international, institutional unrestricted commercial grants. In 2012, he was awarded a NHMRC Practitioner Fellowship. He has delivered over 250 presentations at national and international scientific meetings since 1994, including 25 plenary presentations at major international scientific congresses. In addition to his research profile, he has a long-established national profile in education in Intensive Care Medicine, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He was instrumental in establishing the College of Intensive Care Medicine, serving as an examiner for twelve years, on the Board for ten years and as the first elected President from Chris Nickson Chris Nickson is a Kiwi Emergency Physician and an advanced trainee in intensive care (CICM), currently working in ICU at Royal Darwin Hospital in Australia. Together with Dr Mike Cadogan he runs the Lifeinthefastlane.com website and is committed to free open access meducation (FOAM) that is available to anyone, anywhere at anytime. An avowed Oslerphile, he is also co-creator of iteachem.net, a website dedicated to the art, science and fun of medical education. He is particularly passionate about the intersection of emergency medicine and intensive care, and is on the editorial board of EM Critical Care. Originally a biochemist that lost his way, he is fascinated by poisons and venoms, and trained as a toxicology registrar at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. His other interests including tropical medicine, medical history and anecdotes, clinical epidemiology and blowing bubbles. No bubble is so iridescent or floats longer than that blown by the successful teacher. Sir William Osler Cliff Reid Cliff Reid is the Director of Training for the Greater Sydney Area Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. Having trained and worked in emergency, intensive care, and prehospital & retrieval medicine, he is interested in the provision of resuscitation and critical care to adults and children regardless of location. His passions include teaching, human factors, and how to make things happen in critical resuscitation situations. Cliff runs the popular blog Resus.ME for front line resuscitation clinicians. Scott Weingart Dr Weingart received his medical degree and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He then went on to a fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. He is currently an attending in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Elmhurst Hospital Center; and an associate professor and the director of ED Critical Care at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He has received numerous teaching awards and is recognised as a master educator by Mount Sinai s Institute of Medical Education. He is best known for his podcast on ED Critical Care called the EMCrit Podcast; it currently receives > 100,000 downloads per month. social media and critical care 2013 conference 5

14 General Information Registration Desk The registration desk will be located outside the Bayside Gallery, Level 1 of the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre for the duration of the event. Staff at the registration desk will be happy to help with any queries. Name Badges Each delegate will be given a name badge at registration. This badge will be the official pass to sessions, breaks, lunches and official social functions. It is necessary for delegates to wear their name badges at all times when onsite. Credit Cards Credit cards accepted at the registration desk are MasterCard, Visa and American Express. The majority of hotels, restaurants and shops will accept all major credit cards. Insurance As you will be incurring considerable expense when attending this event, it is strongly recommended that you take out an insurance policy of your choice when booking your travel arrangements. Messages A message board will be located next to the registration desk throughout the event.
