1 City Manager Briefing Report September 2014 Eric M. Soroka, ICMA-CM City Manager This report is prepared in order to inform the City Commission of the status of major projects and ongoing matters. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Preparation of 2014/15 Budget The 2014/15 budget document was adopted by the City Commission at the September 17, 2014 meeting. Aventura City of Excellence School Highlights The School Advisory Committee elections were held. Conducted Open House for all grades. The annual audit was accepted by the City Commission at the September Meeting. The School Improvement Plan was adopted by the City Commission and the School Advisory Committee. The annual Peace Day Ceremony was held at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Newsletter In Process The newsletter for Fall will be distributed in October to the community. Police Department Statistics & Highlights Monthly Crime Overview Crimes from July 2014 to August 2014 that increased: Simple Assault up by 3; Burglary up by 4. Crimes from July 2014 to August 2014 that remained the same: Robbery; City Manager Briefing Report
2 Aggravated Stalking. Crimes from July 2014 to August 2014 that decreased: Burglary down by 5; Larceny down by 8; Theft-Auto down by 3. City Manager Briefing Report 2
3 Calls for service for August 2013 compared to August 2014 decreased by 105. Officers Teresa Williams and John Methvin were selected as Officers of the Month. Founders Day Preparation is underway for the annual Founders Day weekend events. Arts in Public Places Advisory Board The City received 7 responds to the RFP for the call for artists to provide public art on the exterior grounds of the Government Center. The Arts in Public Places Advisory Board met on August 14, 2014 to select finalists. 5 Major Capital Improvement Projects Status Report Aventura Park Facilities Improvements Country Club Drive (Southbound) Road Resurfacing Biscayne Boulevard Decorative Street Lighting Phase III & IV NE 185th Street/Biscayne Boulevard Median Channelizing Modification Design of lengthening the WB left turn lane storage length has commenced. Construction of the turn lane extension and placement of the Quick Curb Delineators are to be done concurrently. The consultant has indicated that plans will be ready to submit for permitting with Miami- Dade County in early October It is anticipated that next fiscal year s budget will be amended to include this project. 2014/15 Projects Design of NE 188th Street Park The firm of Bermello Ajamil & Partners, Inc. was selected to perform park design and engineering services. The Phase I Work Authorization approval is scheduled for the October 2014 Commission Meeting. Biscayne Lake Gardens Road Resurfacing NE 30 th Avenue Street Lighting Project (NE 203 rd Street to NE 207 th Street) NE 29 th Avenue Street Improvements Two Work Authorization approvals are scheduled for the October Commission Meeting to begin the design work on these projects.
