2 ACCOMMODATING A CAREER FOR THE FUTURE Hospitality and Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in Australia. Tourism contributes around $40 billion to the Australian economy annually. Forecasts indicate tourist numbers in the Asia Pacific region will grow to 535 million by 2030*. The exponential growth in tourism numbers underpins new investment and growth in the hotel industry. In Victoria alone, 27 five star hotel developments are scheduled over the next five years. Demand for qualified employees will continue to grow with one in every ten jobs being created in the sector. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) outlines in the Tourism Research Australia report that the growth in tourism employment will result in a move towards highly qualified professionals. Leading hotels and tourism operators are recruiting and supporting skilled and degree-qualified employees to meet the growing demand and to plan for future management opportunities. The industry offers many opportunities for a long term career: Role diversity from Apprentice to General Manager Global career Lifelong transferable skills The Hotel School, Australia s leading university hotel school, is a unique partnership between Southern Cross University, an Australian public university, and Mulpha Australia, a major investor in the hotel industry.
