2 INTRODUCTION In May 2018, Music SA undertook a census of live music across South Australia to gather a snapshot of the current state of play. Compiled by Music SA staff, data was gathered from a variety of sources including venues, booking agents, websites, social media, print and digital gig guides, direct contact with various industry personnel, as well as knowledge, contacts and resources via Music SA s network and the broader industry. The Live Music Office, the Music Development Office, APRA AMCOS and the Australian Hotels Association all provided direction in gathering the information. The Live Music Census has been part of Music SA s annual agenda since 2015, and we re delighted to now be able to provide comparative figures that demonstrate the health of live music in South Australia. This report gives us an indication of the current live music climate. It was determined to be undertaken in May to avoid the heightened cultural activity that occurs during February and March (e.g. Adelaide Fringe and Adelaide Festival), and the summer and Christmas season. Therefore, it is important to note there is likely to be an increased amount of live music activity outside of May. The Live Music Census is essentially a count of how many live music gigs were performed in licensed venues across South Australia in one month, not including festivals and events outside of licensed venues. The live performances counted were predominately contemporary by genre and did not include DJ sets. It was conducted with every intention to capture the most conclusive insights. However, due to the nature of the live music industry some venues and performances may have been unintentionally overlooked. This report does not provide any explanation about the comparative movement in venues and gigs over the years as it could be subject to an increased visibility and shift in marketing practices, making it more accessi-

Music SA extended its reach and research this year to include the entire state, not just the metropolitan area, in the census.

In the Adelaide metropolitan area there were 1,227 gigs across 201 venues.

Some new venues to the census over this time include Fat Controller, Chateau Apollo, Coopers Ale House, Mama Jambo, The Hindley, Halftime,

3 INTRODUCTION ble to collect the broad data. However, our report does show a healthy and consistent level of venues and gigs in the metropolitan area. Music SA extended its reach and research this year to include the entire state, not just the metropolitan area, in the census. In summary, it shows that across South Australia during the month of May 2018, there were 1,523 gigs across 309 venues. In the Adelaide metropolitan area there were 1,227 gigs across 201 venues. This is roughly a 27% increase in gigs and a 28% increase in venues hosting live music in the metropolitan area from 2015 to Some new venues to the census over this time include Fat Controller, Chateau Apollo, Coopers Ale House, Mama Jambo, The Hindley, Halftime, 2KW and The West Oak Hotel. Additionally, some venues that stand out as increasing their volume of live music include The Ed (Mitcham), The Norwood, Club 5082, The Marion, The Warradale and Marion Cultural Centre. Some closures have included Vinyl, The Prometheon, The Producers, The Ed Castle, Fowlers Live (to be relaunched) and Adelaide UniBar (to be relocated).

4 HIGHLIGHTS - South Australia hosted 1,523 live music gigs across 309 venues in South Australia in May The expansion to include the whole of the state in the census saw an increase of 68% in venues and 77% in gigs compared to previous censuses - 65% of venues and 80% of gigs in South Australia in May are metropolitan based - 35% of venues and 20% of gigs in South Australia in May are regional based - The suburb of Adelaide provided the most live music - In the state, venues that host live music are 5% breweries and wineries, 7% clubs and bars, 4% cafes and restaurants, 73% hotels and pubs, 2% markets, 4% entertainment venues and 5% other spaces. - Of these venues, 14% host original music, 64% host cover gigs and 22% host both original and cover gigs
