Tampere Travel and Service Centre will be a hub for all modes of transport, forming an attractive cluster of business activities, jobs, services and housing. 3 A dynamic Tampere at the node of the railway network Tampere is one of the fastest growing cities in Finland, and it has a promising future as a growing metropolitan area. In 2017, the population increased at a record speed, i.e. by 1.6%, and currently, Tampere Central Region is the second largest central region in Finland, with more than 370,000 inhabitants. The starting point is a vision of a practical centre for all modes of transport that is an attractive cluster of business activities, jobs, services and housing. The Travel and Service Centre will be a gateway for domestic and international transport services. The project will connect the city centre s parts on both sides of the railway yard. In cities, station areas are important, functioning as pleasant hubs of services and large flows of people. The development of station areas is carried out in close cooperation between various actors, which ensures smooth mobility, despite the changes that are being made. The Travel and Service Centre will be the most significant strategic transport and construction project in the city centre of Tampere in the coming years. The project is a key part of the urban development in the station area and an important part of the national development of the railway system. The objective is to create a travel centre that provides first-rate services, smooth travel chains, and to improve the pedestrian and bicycle connections from the station to the surrounding districts. Tampere is located at the heart of the economic region of southern Finland, and it can be reached in less than two hours from the entire area. 4 Travel centre and the blocks a new core for the city The Travel and Service Centre will have versatile functions regarding mobility, jobs, trade, services, leisure and housing, as well as first-rate public urban spaces. The total gross floor area will increase by about 172,000 gross floor m². There will be excellent views from the apartments and offices to the surrounding city. The apartments and offices will be located in the city centre, at a node of all modes of transport. There will be a large number of restaurants and shops on different floors, forming a vibrant whole, and all important services will be available to residents, employees and the users of the station. According to estimates, there will be 10,000 passengers passing via the travel centre during the evening peak hour in The Travel and Service Centre will form a seamless whole with the Deck and Arena.
