2 GATEWAY FLIGHT ATTENDANT PROGRAMME Developed in 2011 by ATTTOin partnership with Air New Zealandand Fly DC3 New Zealand Programme continues to evolve, to introduce schools and their students and families to the surprisingly extensive career path of a professional Flight Attendant (Cabin Crew) in NZ 2

5 FLIGHT ATTENDANTS Another name for the Cabin Crew members of an Aircrew team employed primarily to ensure the safety of all passengers aboard commercial flights also on select business jet aircraft Focuses primarily on Cabin and passenger safety in Normal and Emergency situations Flight Deck welfare and communication Passenger Welfare Cabin Service 5

6 INTERNATIONAL CABIN CREW Tend to operate longer tours of duty, well away from the comfort and welfare of their home life. In addition to this, particularly on Long Haul flights, Flight Attendants are tasked with crucial and sometimes compassionate passenger welfare, along with expected customer service duties. Great for crew who are happy to see the world, and be away from home for long periods but tend to miss out on a lot of family and friend lifestyles. 6

7 NZ SHORT HAUL / REGIONAL CABIN CREW Usually back home that night, or stay within a timezone. More take offs and landings in their work day, and little time to develop a rapport however they do get to know their airlines frequent travellers. Suits perhaps younger crew who don t want to be away from home too much, or older crew with families. 7

8 THE X-FACTOR The X-Factor for Cabin Crew having that sensitive maturity having an inbuilt ability to be aware, calm, supportive, organised and flexible according to time of day, length of flight, or passenger and cabin profile A well trained, experienced and attentive kind Cabin Crew member is an asset not only to the airline, but also to New Zealand s tourism industry Among the first ambassadors that our international visitors will meet 8

9 STUDENT ATTRIBUTES The attributes to look for in a Gateway student who would like to experience an introductory training course as Cabin crew are varied Some students just don t want to go into medicine, or university, or learn a trade, However, they have identified that they want to be involved in a career in New Zealand s growing Hospitality, Travel and Tourism industry 9

10 ATTRIBUTES Some students have qualities that will eventually take them into senior crew and leadership roleswithin a few years of training. Others have a happy, bright disposition always the fun one on a crew and in the cabin. Some may be generally calm and organised a global thinker who is aware of what is happening all around them -and who will be able to provide excellent galley support to the cabin service of both economy and business class. Of course everyone will have some excitement about travelling and flying. 10

Teaching & Learning Outcomes Overview of the course Introduction to the Cabin crew, Pilots and trainers of Fly DC3 New Zealand Safety aspects of an Operational Airport environment. Identify the role and demands of the Flight Attendant role in a tourism workplace Unit Standard

13 SAFETY TRAINING Involves Normal Operations and includes Crew Resource Management Aviation security Safety equipment Passenger briefings Passenger handling Aircraft components 13

14 EMERGENCY TRAINING Rejected take-offs, Emergency landings, Emergency evacuations In-flight medical situations and on-board births and deaths Fires/ smoke in the cabin Depressurization/Decompressions Dangerous goods and spills in the cabin Security and hijackings Water landings, and life-raft, jungle, arctic, and desert survival skills 14

17 WEEK 3 FLY DC3 New Zealand at Ardmore Airport. Teaching & Learning Outcomes Identify, as a flight attendant, major aircraft components Unit Standard 9245 A Walk-round of a 30 seat DC-3, then a Scenic Flight observe Cabin crew in action Visit to the Tower at Ardmore 17
