5 COMPANY PROFILE is created by multiple service providers, with Airports Company South Africa taking ultimate responsibility for overall perceptions. Hence, our strategy is for all airport employees, regardless of their employer, to provide hospitable and welcoming service with a truly South African character. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) was formed in 1993 and has succeeded in transforming fragmented assets into a world-class, profitable, state-owned company that is run along commercial lines. ACSA has just completed its most ambitious infrastructure capacity development programme ever. Three years ago, ACSA embarked on this R17 billion programme to generally improve capacity and service offerings at its network of airports. Completion of these improvements fortuitously coincided with South Africa hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Airports and infrastructure development play critical roles in the national economy. A University of Johannesburg survey showed that the economic impact of O.R. Tambo, Cape Town and Durban International Airports was significant, with a combined contribution towards GDP of R85 billion. Furthermore, the three airports generated direct, onairport jobs and indirect jobs. The Company strategy of building an efficient and customer-focused business has informed efforts to modify the culture and attitudes employed in delivering world-class customer service. An airport experience For the past eight years, service standards have been benchmarked through the Airports Council International s (ACI) Airport Service Quality Programme. There are currently 180 airports around the world taking part in this programme, ranging from Atlanta (the largest) to Incheon, Hong Kong and Malaysia (the most efficient). To date, ACSA airports have won 21 achievement awards for passenger satisfaction. Legal Structure Airports Company South Africa Limited (ACSA) was formed in 1993 as a public company under the Companies Act of 1973, as amended, and the Airports Company Act of 1993, as amended. Although ACSA is majority owned by the South African Government, through the Department of Transport, the Company is legally and financially autonomous and operates under commercial law. Formed to own and operate the nine principal South African airports, including the three main international gateways of O.R. Tambo, Cape Town and Durban International Airports, ACSA added Pilanesberg International Airport to its network in 1998 under a 30-year concession with the North West Province. ACSA was partially privatised in 1998, when a 25,4% shareholding was sold to private sector shareholders and employees. The transaction valued ACSA at about R4 billion. In 2005, the 20% foreign-held shareholding was sold to the Public Investment Corporation, a local asset management company. 6
