3 PILOTING YOUR SUCCESS FROM THE GROUND UP Designing and building your aviation projects requires broad and extensive experience in all aspects of airport terminals, facilities and infrastructure. With rich knowledge and a storied history in the aviation industry, our teams are ready to take off with you. For nearly 75 years, we ve collaborated with our aviation clients by designing efficient, cost-saving aviation facilities and building state-of-theart maintenance facilities to keep aircraft flying and providing fastturnaround ramp services to keep them on schedule. We ve developed solutions for environmental liabilities, implemented security measures and prepared for the opportunities in a constantly evolving future. Our comprehensive range of aviation services includes program management, master planning, facility design and construction, environmental planning and permitting and operational systems design. Our in-house team specializes in every aspect of aviation facility design from sophisticated IT systems in passenger terminals to fueling systems and overhaul facilities. 4 AVIATION PLANNING We have partnered with aviation clients since the 1940s, equipping our design and construction teams to get any airport project off the ground. When commercial flights began to take off, convenience of passengers wasn t much of a concern. Simply getting them from point A to point B was a feat in and of itself. As the years have passed, however, the needs and comfort level of passengers have come to the forefront as airlines and the industries that support them recognized the role of passengers in profitability. Today, travelers comfort is critical to the design process. Even before arriving at the terminal, people need to feel at ease with the process. Burns & McDonnell works with airline and airport clients to lessen friction from the first step onto the property through boarding at the gate. By working with airlines and stakeholders, we make design and construction of terminal improvements as seamless as possible for travelers and airport staff alike. Whether the project is parking improvements, wayfinding, security or concessions, communication is key in creating a positive airport experience for passengers. The project team translated our ideas into technical programming and the results exceeded our expectations at every stage of development. ED YOUNG FORMER DIRECTOR OF AVIATION KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AIRSIDE AND LANDSIDE PAVEMENTS Because of our close working relationship with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and experience designing numerous pavement projects, our team is familiar with design procedures and guidelines required at commercial, general aviation and military airports. Our team specializes in the design and phasing of complex airfield infrastructure projects and assisting owners with material selection and quality assurance during construction of the project. Our experience includes all aspects of a flat-work project including pavement design, drainage, striping, lighting and signage, and NAVAID design. 4 BURNS & McDONNELL

7 AVIATION INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND SPECIAL SYSTEMS We understand the challenges of aviation special systems integration, which includes active data and voice networking; data centers; access control and all forms of surveillance and intrusion detection. Our industry-leading project experience in providing data and communications infrastructure includes cabling for airport terminals, aviation facilities and airport/ airline campus environments. We also design and specify network equipment and operational systems for airport and airline clients. We arrange information technology backbone structures for maximum flexibility and growth. We configure cable plants to industry standards to meet the owner s needs and preferences. Our certified network engineers design networks to best practices such as Cisco SAFE. Strong working relationships with the world s airport system integrators allow us to optimally interface these components with security, surveillance and building automation subsystems. We coordinate architectural and mechanical systems to provide sufficient rack space and adequate system cooling at all equipment locations. TERMINALS Our clients call on us to handle many aspects of their aviation projects, relying on our team s comprehensive in-house resources to take their terminal projects through initial planning, engineering design and construction. We provide master planning, programming, architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing aircraft ramp and fire protection engineering for major terminal projects, including new construction and facility expansions. Our team also has extensive experience designing terminal specialty systems, including baggage handling, flight information display systems (FIDS), baggage information display systems (BIDS), ticket counter arrangements, communications and IT, and airline facilities. BURNS & McDONNELL 7
8 HANGARS Design and construction experience is critical to every hangar or maintenance facility project. You also need someone with environmental experience to help you with the siting, planning and permitting required for these complex overhaul and maintenance facilities. Since the 1950s, Burns & McDonnell has designed more than 150 wide- and narrow-body aircraft hangars and maintenance facilities for commercial, corporate and airport clients in the U.S. and abroad. Our experienced team includes facility planners, industrial waste specialists, environmental engineers and air quality control specialists who will bring your project to successful completion. Our team also is experienced in meeting our clients environmental needs. CONTROL TOWERS For 50 years, we have provided design services for airport traffic control towers worldwide. Not only do we provide the architectural and engineering design for structural, mechanical and electrical systems, we supply the experience to equip facilities with communications, radio equipment, TRACON equipment, radar and airfield lighting control. 11 RAMP SERVICES When our clients have critical ramp services projects, they rely on our fulltime specialists to meet their needs. Our team s dedicated experience includes refueling, fueling systems, preconditioned air, 400-Hertz power, passenger boarding bridges, potable water and aircraft deicing systems. Beyond design, we steer your project through site selection, master planning, environmental analysis, permitting and construction. Our ramp services practice is the largest in the world, serving airports and airlines around the globe. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT As your program manager, we work as an extension of your staff to provide coordinated management, planning and design services at all stages of the project. HALF A CENTURY OF EXPERIENCE From handling equipment on the ground to devising hydrant systems that fuel aircraft for takeoff, airports demand exacting approaches for giving airlines what they need to succeed. Our ramp services practice has been serving the aviation industry since the 1950s, meeting and exceeding expectations for airports and airlines throughout North America and around the globe. Our team will help select consultants and subcontractors and administer their contracts; monitor and control the budget; assist with labor relations; implement safety programs; coordinate with federal, state and local agencies; and manage public relations. We can even operate and maintain the facility once complete. BURNS & McDONNELL 11
12 EXPERIENCE 1 AIRSIDE AND LANDSIDE AIRPORT PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (APMS) Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Southern California Determining the reliable load carrying capacity and reliable service life and limitation of pavements is fundamental to the management of an airport s core business. Our team the prime firm among 11 subconsultants is updating the Airport Pavement Management System (APMS) for three LAWA airports in Southern California. Using automated and manual data collection techniques via customized software on tablet computers for field surveys, our team will inspect more than 100 million square feet of airside and landside pavement at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LA/ Ontario International Airport and Van Nuys Airport. LAWA will prioritize its pavement maintenance and capital improvement project plan through this second phase of the APMS program. 2 DELTA AIR LINES LaGuardia Airport New York, New York Delta Air Lines is the primary tenant at Terminals C and D at LaGuardia Airport and has made significant upgrades to the facilities. The airline completed the first phase of its long-term plans in We are the prime consultant for the next phase optimization, a four-year program that began in Our team will provide project management, engineering and construction administration services for the major mechanical systems in Terminals C and D. This includes repairs and replacement of cooling towers, chillers, air handling units, VAV systems, pumps and other equipment. 3 RUNWAY 1R-19L REHABILITATION Kansas City International Airport Kansas City, Missouri The airport s original Runway 1R-19L and its taxiway connectors have severe durability cracking that is becoming progressively worse and creating the potential for foreign object debris (FOD). We are providing civil and electrical consulting for the Kansas City Aviation Department for this project and associated pavements within the runway safety area. Phasing considerations for this project include development of a complex construction safety and phasing plan (CSPP) for rehabilitating these pavements while maximizing airfield operational access on the intersecting crosswind runway complex. 12 BURNS & McDONNELL

15 EXPERIENCE 4 SYSTEM TERMINAL RETRO-COMMISSIONING AND CONDITION ASSESSMENT PROGRAM Houston Airports Houston, Texas The Houston Airport System (HAS) wanted to optimize and improve its facility infrastructure as its systems and equipment have aged and in many cases were never commissioned. Our team performed condition assessments combined with retro-commissioning for more than 6 million square feet of infrastructure at William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and IAH s consolidated rental car facility. 5 MIDFIELD SATELLITE CONCOURSE PROGRAM Los Angeles International Airport Los Angeles, California Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the nation s third-busiest airport in annual passengers and the fifth-busiest airport in annual aircraft operations. Because the main terminal complex was constructed in 1961, its facilities must be continually updated and maintained to meet the needs of airlines and travelers in the 21st century. The Midfield Satellite Concourse North Project is part of a multibillion-dollar modernization program at the terminal complex. We are providing all ramp services, engineering assistance, special systems design, and aviation fueling design services for the program. 6 GROUND TRANSPORTATION STAGING FACILITY Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Austin, Texas Austin-Bergstrom International Airport required new security systems and automatic vehicle identification (AVI) for a new ground transportation and staging facility to manage taxicabs, shuttle buses and limousines serving the airport. We designed the AVI for the staging lot with parking for 130 taxis, shuttle buses and eight over-the-road tour buses, a full-service building for drivers, and lot entry and exit gates. We also designed high definition and standard cameras to cover indoor and parking areas, integrating them with the existing CCTV infrastructure for monitoring transportation vehicles and automatically dispatching taxis from the staging lot to the curb. THE BURNS & McDONNELL DIFFERENCE True partnerships lead to successful projects. At Burns & McDonnell, we dedicate experienced and innovative leaders to your work, beyond the specific needs of a particular job and always with safety in mind. We build long-term relationships as our people engineers, architects, construction professionals, scientists and more become valued extensions of your own teams, often for decades at a time. It s a point of pride that our clients find it difficult to tell the difference between a Burns & McDonnell employee and one of their own. And that s no surprise, considering that we, as employeeowners, carry the commitment of ownership: We succeed when you do. Learn more at burnsmcd.com.
