1 The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) was set up as a statutory body on 11 June 001 by the Minister for Education and Science. Under the Qualifications (Education & Training) Act, 1999, FETAC now has responsibility for making awards previously made by NCVA. Module Descriptor Airline Studies Level 5 L60
2 1 Module Title Airline Studies Module Code L60 3 Level 5 4 Credit Value 1 credit 5 Purpose This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain a FETAC credit in airline studies at Level 5. It is designed to familiarise learners with the fundamentals of airline and airport operations along with the formalities required of international travellers. 6 Preferred Entry Level 7 Special Requirements 8 General Aims Level 4 Certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. None. Learners who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 outline the history and development of the airline industry at global and national level 8. understand the structures of the airline business 8.3 be familiar with travel formalities and regulations 8.4 understand the organisation structure of a major airport and the roles and responsibilities of staff 8.5 appreciate the importance of good communication and customer service skills. 9 Units The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 5 units. 3 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 History and Development of Air Travel outline the development of the aviation industry examine the regulation of air transport operations in terms of bilateral agreements, freedoms of the air, Warsaw Convention and the Chicago Convention analyse the effects of deregulation on the international aviation industry assess the effects of deregulation on the Irish aviation industry construct profiles of Irish airlines examining them under the following headings: customer base, routes, quality of service. Unit Airline Structures and Operations outline the role and functions of international aviation organisations and professional bodies 10.. list the constituent airlines of the world s strategic air alliances outline the advantages offered to airlines by strategic air alliances explain the concept of interlining interpret aviation industry terms, definitions and codes evaluate product differentiation in the aviation industry differentiate between the categories of service provided by airlines in terms of scheduled, chartered and air taxi services identify the passenger capacity, configuration and range of the major aircraft types understand procedures involving turnaround and transit arrangements list the main airlines operating out of Irish airports.
4 Unit 3 Employment and Training within the Aviation Industry identify the employment opportunities that exist within the aviation industry, the qualifications necessary and the application procedures understand the importance of background checks that are required of employees working in security-sensitive aviation jobs understand the duties and functions of a variety of aviation personnel understand the procedures for appropriate care of special needs and VIP passengers communicate effectively both on an individual basis and over a public service address system. Unit 4 Airport Structures and Operations identify and locate, with the use of maps, the principal hub airports worldwide and their associated feeder/spoke airports identify the location of all Irish airports and be familiar with the destinations served calculate journey times taking into account international time zones analyse the importance and value of holding slots at the world s principal airports construct flow charts to illustrate the movement of both arriving and departing passengers at an airport explain the importance of airport security. Unit 5 Air Travel Rights Regulations and Formalities explain the travel formalities required of Irish citizens travelling abroad outline the health requirements needed for entering different countries discuss the importance of travel insurance demonstrate an understanding of ticketing and reservations procedures including one of the following: Galileo, Amadeus, Sabre or Worldspan examine the rights enjoyed by air passengers under European Union legislation. 3
5 11 Portfolio of Assessment Please refer to the glossary of assessment techniques and the note on assessment principles at the end of this module descriptor. All assessment is carried out in accordance with FETAC regulations. Assessment is devised by the internal assessor, with external moderation by FETAC. Summary Examination 60% Project 40% 11.1 Examination The internal assessor will devise a theory-based examination that assesses the candidate s ability to recall and apply theory and understanding, requiring responses to a range of questions types, short-answer and structured. These questions may be answered in different media, such as in writing or orally. The examination will be based on a range of specific learning outcomes and will be.5 hours in duration. The format of the examination will be as follows: Section A 1 short answer questions Candidates are required to answer 10 ( marks each). Section B 5 Structured questions not more than 1 question per unit. Candidates are required to answer 4 (10 marks each). 11. Project The internal assessor will devise a project brief that requires candidates to demonstrate an understanding of the historical development, organisational structure, employment, training, regulations and formalities of the aviation industry. 1 Grading Pass 50-64% Merit 65-79% Distinction % 4
