5 The main Users and their Needs have been identified as: Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP) Decrease traffic overload on major airports Cost-effective flight assistance and flight information services in small/regional airports Operators (Airport, Aircraft and Aeroclubs) Increase traffic of minor airports (more revenues) Ease access to small/regional airports (e.g. during adverse weather conditions and at night) Pilots Improvement of situational awareness on minor airports and therefore of safety, confidence and efficiency in the flight operations 4

6 Space Services Benefits in Aviation Systems (S 2 BAS) project aims to: Develop Deploy Demonstrate a pre-operational platform delivering reliable and cost-effective services to small and regional airports The platform is based on the following space assets: GNSS (EGNOS/Galileo) Earth Observation Satellite Communication Safe execution of GNSS assisted flights Airport surrounding topographic / obstacle survey Remote management of unmanned airports / airfields 5

8 S 2 BAS Airspace Concept customized Airspace Concept for small airports enabling safe flights reliable and cost-effective operations low procurement and maintenance cost with regards to currently available solutions SCA (Self Contained Area) cylindrical volume surrounding a small airport (or group of small airports) manage aircrafts exit/entry operations and approaches aircrafts within the SCA are provided with real-time information (e.g. flight separation, aerodrome operational status, meteorological conditions) 7

13 Foreseen S 2 BAS key benefits and impacts: Extend surveillance beyond the current limits (Non Radar Coverage) Can be deployed in emergency scenario Allow small aircrafts to fly in severe weather conditions and during night on small airports Improved on-board navigation aids for civil aviation segment Improvement of small airport capacity (fluency) Increase of the business for the involved stakeholders, thanks to the traffic increase Increase territory value and associated economical consequences (e.g. creation of employment, business) 12
