3 Background: Since noticeable increase of aeroplane accidents resulting from loss of control in flight (LOC-I) events. There is indication that the flight crews involved in these LOC-I accidents had responded inappropriately during these events e.g. Colgan Air 3407 & Air France 447. ICAO, FAA and EASA established need for effective countermeasures to LOC-I & formed Working Committee. Conclusions led to the formulation of the first edition of the ICAO Doc Manual on UPRT. Operators should adopt UPRT in their training curriculum. CAAS AOCR/AC regulation & guidance to operators. 3

4 AOCR The training of flight crew in the following areas: (a) proper flight crew coordination and training in all types of emergency and abnormal situations or procedures caused by engine, airframe or systems malfunctions, fire or other abnormalities; (b) avoidance of controlled flight into terrain and policy for the use of the ground proximity warning systems (GPWS); (c) upset prevention and recovery training; and (d) knowledge and skills related to visual and instrument flight procedures for the intended area of operation, charting, human performance including threat and error management and in the transport of dangerous goods. 4

5 -AC UPRT is to be incorporated into a pilot s training as part of: CPL, MPL and type rating training provided by an ATO; and Recurrent training provided by the AOC holder. ATOs and AOC holders are to update their pilot training programmes to incorporate UPRT. They are to submit their UPRT programme and their instructor qualification programme for approval. 5

14 -AC INSTRUCTORS The efficacy of UPRT is dependent on the quality of the instructor. The ATOs and AOC holders are to ensure that their UPRT instructors are qualified through an approved instructional programme. The instructors should possess a sound knowledge of both the academic and practical aspects of UPRT. 14

18 FSTD_ICAO implement standards that require that UPRT in FSTDs be conducted in an appropriately qualified device using the highest level of fidelity available; and provide conditions, whenever feasible, under which FSTD instructors are trained and able to provide feedback in real time using UPRTspecific debriefing tools of the instructor operating station. 18

19 ED IV of 9625 It is essential that the training provider ensure that UPRT instructors have been properly trained to interpret the data provided by these IOS feedback tools. Satisfactory feedback should be provided in three principal areas, as discussed below: The instructor station should provide adequate feedback and support of the aeroplane and controls state during upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT) exercises. This should include: (1) FSTD validation envelope (2) Flight control positions (3) Aeroplane operational limits 19

23 -AC FSTD Instructors Understand the capabilities and limitations of the specific FSTDs used for UPRT; Understand the VTE of the device in use and the appreciation for the potential of negative training that may exist when training beyond the boundaries of this VTE; Understand specific UPRT-related functionality of the IOS and other tools; Must distinguish between generic UPRT strategies and OEM specific recommendations with respect to their relevance to the device capabilities and limitations; and Understand the importance of adhering to the UPRT scenarios that have been validated by the training programme developer. 23
