L.I.A.R.S. Club Website: World RC Jet Masters held at the Meiringan AB, Switzerland see page 3 A Message from the President. Happy New Year to all! Hope everyone had a safe and healthy holiday season. We will be having our January meeting as usual at 8:00 PM, January 9, Our Club has purchased WRAM show tickets and they will be available at $5.00 each for members. First come, first served. We have been in contact with Kevin Beck, President of the Falcons, discussing the possibility of sharing the cost of a Wram Bus. Details will be ed as soon as possible. Due to the the holiday party being held in January, there will be no Chili-Fly this year. We are, also, in the process of changing the Lock on the gate to a KEY ONLY option. Only paid members who are issued a field permit will get one. Starting in 2014, the Dues will be due by December 31st If the dues are not received by then, you will be dropped from the roster and have to re-apply as a new member. At the time of renewal, a new key will be mailed to or given to the member along with his or her new field permit. This new policy will allow the new year field permit to start at the first of the month in January. The new lock key, issued every year, will, hopefully, deter non-members that have been using the field for free. The board is, also, in the process of revising the field rules to include FPV rules as suggested by AMA guidelines. Dues are Due! February 28, 2014 is the last day. Any dues received after this date will be returned and the process of becoming a new member will apply. Be Well Be Safe See you at the field! Steve Siedlecki President LIARS NO excuses or exceptions!.

The Luray Aerial Trimming Saw This device is amazing but it sure looks hazardous when you think of what could happen if he slips up with that contraption swinging near all those high voltage wires. 3 2013 RC JET AIRCRAFT WORLD CUP MASTERS held on August 2013 Meiringan Air Base, Switzerland This is the best RC Jet Master show video I ve ever seen. It is all because of the absolutely unbelievable display of scale RC jet aircraft that do everything, and I mean everything a full size jet is expected to do. Every takeoff and landing perfect, regardless of the wind. Dropping of fuel tanks, operating air speed brake, ejection of missile jamming chaff, full operating cockpit video control displays, active pilot head movements, All models had operating wheel brakes. These models have everything and were being flown by the best RC pilots I have ever seen. Not their "first time at the rodeo". A show of talent, lots of time and DEEP POCKETS! 64 pilots from 18 countries. What a show!! Check it out. UAV Carrier Ops THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO I'VE SEEN ON THE NAVY'S NEW UAV FIGHTER DURING CARRIER OPS. IT'S GOR- GEOUS. AND MAKE'S ME PROUD OF THE EXTREME TECHNOLOGICAL PROWEROUS OF OUR US MILITARY. EXCEPT FOR MANEUVERING ON THE CARRIER DECK, THIS VEHICLE OPERATES AUTONOMOUSLY.
4 FAA endorses AMA rules to govern personal use of suas for Precision Ag November 25th In an online news story by Oklahoma City Channel 9 News, FAA effec vely endorsed AMA s safety guidelines for the personal use of suas for agricultural applica ons. As reported by Jus n Dougherty Farmers may operate an unmanned aircra over their own property for personal use Guidelines for the opera on of model aircra, such as those published by the Academy of Model Aeronau cs, may be used by farmers as reference for safe model UAS opera ons. PL enacted by Congress as part of the FAA Moderniza on and Reform Act of 2012, provides that individuals opera ng small unmanned aircra (model aircra ) for personal use may do so within the programming of a recognized community based organiza on (AMA) and in accordance with a community based set of safety guidelines. Academy of Model Aeronautics: AMA Response to FAA s UAS Integration Roadmap FAA s Integration of Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the National Airspace System Roadmap Bob Brown, president of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), released the following statement regarding the Federal Aviation Administration s (FAA) Roadmap for the Integration of Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS): The AMA congratulates the Federal Aviation Administration on the completion of its UAS integration roadmap. The completion of this important project puts us one step closer to enabling a regrettably restrained domestic industry that is poised to infuse tens of billions of dollars into the US economy. The agency s roadmap illustrates a necessary and comprehensive process for integrating highly sophisticated unmanned aircraft into the national airspace alongside manned aircraft operations. However, FAA s plan speaks minimally to the recreational use of small unmanned aircraft (model aircraft) and the emerging community of amateur personal-use UAS enthusiasts. Model aircraft operations are managed by AMA s community-based safety program, and modelers have operated their aircraft safely and harmoniously in the NAS for decades. However, recent advancements in computerized microelectronics, brushless electric motors and light-weight high -capacity batteries have fostered a new segment of small UAS enthusiasts. The Academy of Model Aeronautics has worked cooperatively with the FAA for the past several years developing and updating AMA s safety guidelines governing the aeromodeling activity. The Academy is now prepared to extend its community-based programming and lend its experience and expertise in support of the growing amateur personal-use community.
5 In the observation seat I must conclude. by Avey Shaw Although I would like to fly at the L.I.A.R.S. field more, the field is a great distance from my home and, therefore, it is rather inconvenient for me to fly there often. Most of my flying is done at Bethpage State Park. During the week, there is no charge getting on to the Polo Field to fly. However, if you want to fly on the weekends, the cost is $8. Practically speaking, I fly during the week. Usually the same guys show up, perhaps six to a dozen, all retired, with the same old stuff to fly. It is a pleasant experience to see old friends, we BS and enjoy the weather. This past Saturday, I decided to break the monotony, pay the toll taker the $8 and see some of the younger, still working members, that fly on the weekends. The second reason for the change in my routine was that I received an E -mail that reassured our membership we would have the field to ourselves. There would be no watering or other activities to curtail our flying. I decided to take my 80 inch Spitfire out of mothballs and give her a treat. She would feel the wind gracing her airfoil once again. The weather was just perfect as I arrived at the field. To my astonishment, the flight line was loaded with, perhaps, thirty to forty airplanes. After setting myself up, I went around shaking hands, talking to guys I rarely see at the field. There was one fellow I haven't seen for thirty years who can't make meetings, but is still actively flying on weekends. I am finally coming to the primary reason for this article. The planes that lined the field, with the exception of mine and two others, were ARF, but that is not surprising. What blew my mind was the size of these machines, 1/3 3D, ¼ scale military and civilian as well as ducted fan jets. Most were built up but some were foam. About half were electric and the rest divided gas and glo. There were a couple of small gas engines in the.60 size range that, when running, put out lots of power with great sound. I liked that very much. I was surprised to see a ¼ scale FW 190 electric powered that really grooved. There was a ¼ scale Monocoupe, also electric, and a 1/5 scale gas Howard DGA. The look of these aircraft was outstanding. It would take a year or more for an experienced model builder to produce some of these fine machines. I was impressed by the way they were piloted. The speed at which a delta ducted fan flew was awesome. There was, at no time, a flight station that was not being used. The frequency board only had a couple of pins, one of which was mine. I have not been living in a cave these past recent years and I did know of all the improvements to our hobby, but, the contrast to those retired folks flying during the week to the younger more active fliers on the weekends is phenomenal. What I didn't realize was how deeply involved in the hobby these younger members were. I must conclude, on a fixed income, we retirees not only can't compete with these guys in what they can spend, but also in their capabilities. Avey Shaw Page 5
6 Around 1946, the USAAF had put out requirements for a * Long Range Penetration Fighter that could escort the heavy bombers of the time. Prototypes from 3 different companies were built. Mystery Plane #1 First was the USAF McDonnell XF only 2 built, also the USAF McDonnell XF-88 with turboprop built. Second was the Lockheed XF built And Third was the USAF North American XF-93A Prototypes built Experience learned during the Korean War and the introduction of the High Speed B-47 Bomber called for the cancellation* of a Long Range Penetration Fighter. McDonnells, then, went on to redesign the XF-88 to become the F-101. and the winner is:? McDonnell F-101 No entries

8 The Spruce Goose under financial scrutiny. by Mark Phelps / Published: Dec 24, 2013 The McMinnville, Oregon, museum housing Howard Hughes' mammoth H-4 Hercules (better known as the "Spruce Goose") is facing financial scrutiny, and the ownership of the historic airplane is in question. The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is backed by Evergreen International Airlines founder Delford Smith, 83, and along with some of Smith's other business entities, the cargo carrier is facing financial difficulty. According to reports in the Oregon Live online news source, creditors are trying to force Evergreen International Airlines into Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and the Oregon Department of Justice is investigating whether or not funds from Smith's businesses have been illegally mixed with museum financing.
