3 Rational What is the general problematic? Air traffic will double by 2020 Airports would become the bottleneck Major airports approaching their ultimate capacity Short term solutions don't solve long term problems Airports will not be able to cope with the future demand if no radical change is made New concept is needed 3

4 State of the Art What has been done and/or is underway? Can current approach (Hub & Spoke, ) solve future demands? Mainly local solutions e.g.: AMAN, DMAN, Wake Vortex, Parallel Runways Approaches, A-SMGCS, Significant increase in Airport Capacity requires radical change such as a whole new concept for airport operations 4

9 AirSide-LandSide Separation (ASLS) This concept is based on physical separation of the Air-side from the Land-side by placing the Land-side to the city and connecting it to the airside out of the city with the high speed train. Current airport paradigm Landside terminal in the city High Speed Train Runways far from the city Future airport paradigm 9

10 AirSide-LandSide Separation (ASLS) Several air-sides around the city could be integrated with one land-side terminal in the city More landsides in distant cities can share the same airside Direction: North America Bruxelles Paris Direction: South America, Spain Direction: Africa 10

12 Problem Refinement What to do? The basic problem is significant increase in capacity, but: There is no formal global capacity definition It should be global and not local approach - need a holistic view of airport network Proposing a global capacity definition Understanding elements of throughputs Start with PAX flows. 12
