One of the most significant achievements of the Legacy 500 s original design is something passengers never even know is there. And that s the whole idea. The Legacy 500 is the first in its class to replace conventional controls with full fly-by-wire technology. The redundant high-speed computers will help smooth out turbulence before passengers can feel it. Flight envelope protection will avoid upset conditions. And maneuvers that were once almost impossible will be performed without fanfare, such as steep descents to short-field landings. For the flight crew, the advantage is effortless response, greater control and reduced workload when they need it most. And, for everyone, the reward is a smoother flight. In 2010 the Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 fly-by-wire system has received a prestigious Filghtglobal Achievement Award in the Innovator of the Year category. The same attention is given to enveloping the crew in comfort and security while reducing fatigue and workload. Every need is anticipated. Every function is intuitive, right down to the natural movements of the sidestick controls that make pilot and airplane seem as if they are joined at the wrist. The dark and quiet flight deck will offer features that will be ahead of the curve for years to come. Its centerpiece will be an advanced avionics suite based on the top-tier Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion platform, and designed specifically for the Legacy 500 by the pilots who will fly it. A synthetic vision system will be standard. An enhanced vision system and head-up display (HUD) will be available as options. Standard autothrottles will conserve fuel while providing pilots with a reduced workload. Rockwell Collins most advanced avionics suite improves situational awareness and offers paperless-cockpit capabilities. Auto-throttles reduce fuel flow and pilot workload at the same time. Advanced graphics take flight displays to new levels of clarity and intuitive operation.
