A Few Reminders are aircraft.* *NTSB Order No. EA-5730; FAA v. Pirker
A Few Reminders Our goal is to integrate them into the NAS
A Few Reminders
FAA UAS Registration Who needs to register? Small UAS (between.55 and 55lbs) owners Operating outdoors Owner Requirements 13 years of age or older If under 13, a person 13 years of age or older must register U.S. citizen or permanent resident
FAA UAS Registration Where to register? Online (RegisterMyUAS.faa.gov) Weighs less than 55lbs By paper Weighs more than 55lbs Intend to operate outside the United States UAS owned by trustee Required by Exemption 333 or Certificate of Authorization
FAA UAS Registration What do I get? Hobby/Recreation One registration to owner Number applied to all UAS Commercial One registration per UAS
FAA UAS Registration How do I mark my UAS? Permanent marker Label Engraving Any other means Registration number: Must be readily accessible Maintained in a condition that is readable and legible upon close visual inspection May be enclosed in a compartment that is readily accessible
Myths vs. Facts
Myths vs. Facts Myth: I m not getting paid, therefore, I m not a commercial operator. FACT: Operating a UAS in furtherance of business is considered a commercial operation Realtors Non-Profits Media production Advertising Demonstrations Inspections
Myths vs. Facts Myth: The FAA doesn t control airspace below 400ft (or 83ft, or 70ft, etc.) AGL. FACT: FAA is responsible for the safety of U.S. airspace from the ground up Navigable airspace extends to the surface
FAA Recognized Operations
FAA Recognized Operations HOBBY CIVIL PUBLIC
Hobby/Recreational Operations Model / Hobbyist Aircraft operated in accordance with Modeling Standards (Academy of Model Aeronautics) Authorized through Public Law , Section 336 and 14 CFR
Hobby/Recreational Operations Model / Hobbyist 14 CFR Flown strictly for hobby or recreational use Operated in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines and within the programming of a nationwide community-based organization Limited to not more than 55lbs Does not interfere with and gives way to any manned aircraft When flown within 5 miles of an airport, operator provides the airport operator and the ACTC with prior notice
Hobby/Recreational Operations Model / Hobbyist Prior notice to Airport Operator Phone call In-person meeting Letter Any other acceptable method
Civil Operations Aircraft other than Hobby or Public Aircraft Authorized through 14 CFR 107
Civil Operations Part 107 Summary Daylight operations only No operations over people Must operate within VLOS Remote Pilot Certificate required Altitude restricted to 400ft AGL* Weight restricted to under 55lbs Restricted from certain airspace
Civil Operations Part 107 Summary Restricted from certain airspace Class B, C, D, and E (associated with an airport surface area) require ATC authorization ATC authorization can only be granted through the FAA s online UAS web portal ( Class G No ATC permission is required No notification of Airport Operator is required
Civil Operations Remote Pilot Certificate
Public Use Operations
Public Use Operations Aircraft used by governmental agencies DOD, DOJ, DHS, NASA, NOAA State and Local Agencies Qualifying Universities Authorized through Certificate of Authorization (COA)
Public Use Operations Generally speaking Must serve a government function Each COA application is thoroughly evaluated Approximately 60 days to process COAs generally have a two year time limit Must reapply COAs can include special provisions Certain airspace Certain times of day/night
Statistics
Statistics Through March 30, 2017 Remote Pilot Certificates issued 39,041 Knowledge Exams 26,800 taken 24,588 passed (92% pass rate)

Airport Operators Responsibility
Airport Operators Responsibility Safety Minimize impact to manned aircraft operations Incorporate suas when able
Airport Operators Responsibility If notified of UAS operation Gather information Location Operation area dimensions Altitudes Number of UAS operating Time and duration Real-time contact info for operator Record the activity Identify any operational issues
Airport Operators Responsibility Can object to UAS operations Negatively impact safety Provide written documentation to operator as to why Airport Manager authority Generally limited to airport surface area (runways, taxiways, ramp areas, surrounding land) Does not extend to airspace above airport
