Resident Student CPUT already has in place a transport system, why is there going to be another one? In the past, the University has engaged with private contractors that provide transport services to students, such as key links between residences and campuses. The contracted shuttle system is perceived to require both operational and strategic restructuring. For the successful functioning of the University there is a need for adequate linkages between campuses, that will also reduce the University s carbon footprint. The CPUT shuttle system is a Green Initiative of the University. Will this Shuttle operate at night, on weekends and on vacation periods? During term weekdays the shuttle services operating hours will run from 6am-10pm and during the term weekends the service will run as follows: Saturday from 7am-10pm and Sunday from 7am- 10pm. The operating hours for the vacation period is between 7am-6pm on weekdays and weekends. The operating hours for the vacation periods will be different, as it the service does not need to fit in with University timetables. Will the shuttle ONLY take me from residence to campus? The Shuttle will not only provide a service from residence to campus but it will also provide inter-campus linkages as well as inter-residence linkages. At key times there will be linkages to certain malls and linkages to Metropolitan Public Transport in the immediate areas. Shuttle. There is an approximate fee of R600 per annum/ R50 per month as a non-optional levy.
Day Student using Public Transport Is the Shuttle going to pick us up from Metropolitan train stations? A consideration is for the Shuttle service to integrate and compliment the Metropolitan railway service with the use of the Metro train stations being made major nodes so that the Shuttle services can accommodate staff and students that may wish to use the Metropolitan services. Will the Shuttle ONLY take me from Metropolitan transport services to campus? The Shuttle will not only provide a service from Metropolitan transport stations to campus but it will also provide inter-campus linkages as well as inter-residence linkages. The shuttle will not, however, act as a Metro Bus that has private drop off s and pick up s. Why should I pay for the Shuttle if I won t use it? 1. Some of the trips required by the University are not suited to conventional public transport, such as recreational field trips. 2. This Shuttle system will also reduce the University s carbon footprint. The CPUT Shuttle System is a Green Initiative of the University. 3. The University is a community and just as we all contribute revenue tax to the country, so we must support our own CPUT community. Shuttle. There is an approximate fee of R600 per annum/ R50 per month as a non-optional levy.
Day Student using Private Transport I live far from my campus and any public transport systems, how can this system to work for me? To save on travelling costs students and staff can park at their nearest campus or residence and take the Shuttle to their relevant campus. If public transport is closer than a CPUT campus or residence to the student or staff members then public transport can be taken and the Shuttle will pick up that individual from that station to be taken to the relevant campus. Why should I pay for a shuttle service if I am not going to use it? For the successful functioning of the University there is a need for adequate linkages between campuses. It is a CPUT decision that this requirement is met. There is also a need for students and staff to travel between lectures on different campuses in a manner that ensures compliance with the academic timetable of the University. This service will be economical, resulting in few cars on the road. Whether a student chooses to use the Shuttle or not the service will have a non-optional levy, this allows for the less fortunate students to be subsidised. The shuttle system will also reduce the University s carbon footprint. The CPUT shuttle system is a Green Initiative of the University. Shuttle. There is an approximate fee of R600 per annum/ R50 per month as a non-optional levy.
Wellington Student If I live in the CPUT Wellington campus residence, why would I need to use the shuttle? For the successful functioning of the University there is a need for adequate linkages between campuses. Wellington campus is not located within practicable distance to the Wellington Train Station nor the Paarl Train Station. The shuttle will allow students from Wellington campus to access resources from other campuses that they might otherwise be limited to. The shuttle will not, however, act as a Metro Bus that has private drop off s and pick up s. If you aren t going to use the shuttle then why pay for it? For the successful functioning of the University there is a need for adequate linkages between campuses, that will also reduce the University s carbon footprint. It is a CPUT decision that this requirement is met. There is also a need for students and staff to travel between lectures on different campuses in a manner that ensures compliance with the academic timetable of the University. Shuttle. There is an approximate fee of R600 per annum/ R50 per month as a non-optional levy.
Athlone Student Will the shuttle ONLY take me from residence to campus? The Shuttle will not only provide a service from residence to campus but it will also provide inter-campus linkages as well as inter-residence linkages. At key times there will be linkages to certain malls and linkages to Metropolitan Public Transport in the immediate areas. The University has recognised the need for there to be adequate linkages to Groote Schuur Hospital and have placed linkages to this facility. Will the shuttle be included in my bursary? Shuttle. There is an approximate fee of R600 per annum/ R50 per month as a non-optional levy.the shuttle fee will be included in the bursary.
Disabled Student How is the Shuttle going to cater to my needs? Provision has been made for the majority of disabled users, those with hearing and sight impairments to use a conventional system. Those using wheel chairs will need a different approach, requiring more assistance during boarding alighting, therefore these individuals will need a separate shuttle that will cater to their needs. Shuttle. There is an approximate fee of R600 per annum/ R50 per month as a non-optional levy.
Staff Can I not rather use the university s fleet of vehicles to travel to a different campus? In the past, transportation between campuses is on-demand only using pool vehicles and it is not operating as efficiently as it might, limiting the opportunities for the integration of the various campuses. The University has decided to eliminate the use of these vehicles, therefore staff will need to access other campuses by the use of the shuttle. This will also reduce the University s carbon footprint. I live far from my campus and any public transport systems, how can this system to work for me? To save on travelling costs students and staff can park at their nearest campus or residence and take the Shuttle to their relevant campus. If public transport is closer than a CPUT campus or residence to the staff members then public transport can be taken and the Shuttle will pick up that individual from that station to be taken to the relevant campus.
