3 Solo Flight Procedures (BWS) Purpose The purpose of this guide is to outline the responsibilities, procedures, and criteria for the BWS student to conduct solo flight operations. Students who meet the requirements listed below will perform solo flight operations. Requirements In order for a student to perform solo operations, the following requirements must be met. All of these requirements must be recorded in ARTS and verified by the Flight Commander. Student must score 90% or greater on the BWS solo exam consisting of emergency procedures (EP s), limits, solo specific items, and general knowledge as outlined in the Flight Training Guide (FTG), th AVN REGT Standing Operating Procedures (SOP), and the Solo Procedures Guide (SPG). The general test questions will be corrected to 100% with no more than 2 EP s / Limits corrected to 100%. Verbal correction is authorized. Student must score 85% or higher on the BWS End of stage EOS) evaluation and be proficient in the use of the Electronic Data Manager (EDM). Student must have completed the necessary Simulated Engine Failure (SEF) task iterations and met the proficiency requirements for the task. They must be recommended to perform solo flight by the assigned IP and EOS evaluator. Left seat familiarization must be completed prior to solo flight. NOTE 1: Students who do not achieve a minimum score of 90% on the BWS solo exam will be given an overall unsatisfactory grade for the training day. Students who fail the solo exam a 2 nd time will be counseled by the Flight Commander and referred to the A Company, th AVN Commander for disposition. NOTE 2: Students who fail to meet solo requirements for other than written examination failure will complete remaining syllabus with a dual flight. NOTE 3: In the event of an odd number of solo-qualified students per above, the Flight Commander/Assistant Flt Commander shall select a round out solo student to fulfill aircrew requirements for solo operations. The Flight Commander/Assistant Flt Commander shall make this selection based on overall BWS performance and other factors at his/her discretion. NOTE 4: The BN CDR may exempt students to include Foreign Military from the solo flight requirement due to weather, maintenance, or administrative actions.
4 Procedures a. General: (1) Student solo flight shall not be conducted unless all equipment listed in the appropriate Minimum Essential Equipment (MEE) list IAW APPENDIX th Aviation SOP is installed and operational. (2) Solo students shall receive a lost communications briefing by the flight commander and shall be provided the appropriate publications IAW 1-212th Aviation SOP. (3) Weather Requirements. (a) The current predominant ceiling shall be observed to be at or above 1500 AGL, the predominant visibility at or greater than 3 SM, and both ceiling and visibility forecast to remain predominant, as stated, throughout the solo period. In the event that the predominant ceiling and visibility decreases below these minima, solo flights may recover to Shell AHP with predominant ceiling and visibility not less than 1000 AGL and 3 SM. If the predominant ceiling and visibility deteriorate below 1000 AGL and 3 SM, the solo aircrew must land and await further instructions; this landing action for deteriorating weather conditions shall be under the advisement, guidance, and supervision of the chase aircrew. (b) Solo flight is prohibited when the known, observed, or forecast wind exceeds 20 knots or the gust spread exceeds 10 knots. (4) The following are prohibited during solo flight operations. (a) Special Visual Flight Rules (SVFR) operations. (b) Emergency procedures training. (c) Instrument flight rules flight (to include practice instrument approaches). (d) Multi-aircraft/formation flights for IERW students. (e) The use of portable electronic devices. Failure to comply with this directive will be grounds for elimination. (5) Solo students shall: (a) Not attempt to start an aircraft after a failed or aborted start. After a failed or aborted start the monitoring IP will start the aircraft from the left seat. (b) Have position lights on bright when operating solo. (c) Not conduct contour or nap of the earth (NOE) flight. (d) Not initiate an approach or land unless arrival has been acknowledged by HUB or chase aircrew. (e) Not carry passengers. (f) Not takeoff after landing due to a PL.
5 (g) Land at Shell AHP NLT 30 minutes prior to the briefed downtime or NLT 30 minutes prior to official sunset, whichever is earlier. (6) Solo student preflight shall be supervised by an IP assigned by the Flight Commander. The Flight Commander shall brief the supervising IP(s) to verify the following three items: (1) Crew Mission Briefing complete; (2) walk-around inspection complete; (3) visual verification, by the supervising IP, of the possession and physical security of the CSEL into the Air Warrior vest CSEL pocket and the possession and cockpit stowage of the EDM. (7) The GPU shall be used for all engine starts by solo students. Students shall be trained and proficient on the proper procedures for GPU start and GPU failure prior to performing solo. (8) Other than takeoff or landing, the minimum enroute altitude for solo operations is 800 MSL. (9) Only solo-approved RTs shall be used by solo students; the specific solo-approved RT for a specific solo flight shall be briefed in daily mission and crew mission briefing. (10) Except for the assigned solo-approved RT of intended landing, RTs shall be avoided by 1000 meters or over flown at a minimum of 800 MSL; solo aircrew shall monitor the appropriate RT frequency within 3K of any RT. Landing at assigned solo-approved RTs may be accomplished only after the appropriate radio calls have been made. (11) Approaches to an assigned solo-approved RT shall be a VMC approach to a hover only; landing to the ground in an RT shall only be conducted in an emergency. b. Solo Duties: (1) The student occupying the right seat is the pilot in command (PC) and logs PC on the DA FORM (2) The left seat student performs as copilot and logs OR on the DA FORM and shall not operate the aircraft flight controls except under the following conditions: (a) In the event of an actual forced landing, the left seat student may assist in lowering the collective and call out of rotor RPM and airspeed. (b) In the case of actual loss of hydraulics, the left seat student may help the student pilot on the controls with control inputs as necessary to affect a safe landing. (c) In the event of an emergency that incapacitates the right seat student pilot, the left seat student shall assume control of the aircraft. (d) With the aircraft on the ground and the collective in the full-down position, holding of the flight controls so as to permit the right seat student to correct seat or pedal position. (e) During hot refueling. (3) Solo communications: Solo students shall add the suffix SOLO to their call sign. Detailed radio procedures are contained in Paragraph 6-15 in the th Aviation SOP.
6 c. EDM and Route Procedures: (1) General EDM operation procedures are outlined in Task 3208 in the FTG-S. For solo Operations, the EDM shall only be worn by the left seat student. The left seat student shall not perform EDM duties while on the flight controls, should such a situation develop. (2) The map shall be the primary means of navigation. The EDM will only be referenced to determine that it conforms to the map data. (3) Routes to be planned shall be provided to the solo student the day prior to solo flight. These routes shall be planned and plotted on the map by the student. The assigned IP will verify that the route was planned IAW Task 1402 Perform Tactical Flight Mission Planning. d. Solo Lost Communications: (1) If either the UHF or VHF radio fails during the training period, the student shall contact a dual aircraft to report the situation and comply with the IP s instructions. (2) If the FM radio fails, inform HUB and the chase aircrew of status and return to Shell AHP. (3) In the event of complete loss of two-way communications during solo flight, climb to 1000 MSL and return to Shell for landing. In all cases, observe traffic flow, enter traffic flashing landing/search light, and land the aircraft. Anticipate a light gun signal from the control tower and comply with the light gun signal(s). If a light gun signal is not received, the solo aircrew is expected to use reasonable and safe judgment, clear the flight path as best possible, enter a standard traffic pattern conforming to predominant traffic flow, and land to the appropriate pad that supports hover taxi to parking, and hover taxi to parking. Steady Green - Cleared to land Flashing Green - Return for landing Steady Red - Give way to other aircraft Flashing Red - Airfield unsafe - Do not land (4) In the event contact is lost with the solo chase aircraft due to aircraft PL or loss of communications, solo students shall: (a) Maintain 800 MSL and continue via their planned routes to TOI or Shell AHP without attempting approaches at RTs. (b) Upon arrival proceed to parking and if no IPs are available, shut down and await further instructions. (c) IPs with a student may provide assistance as necessary. e. Solo Max Flight Duration: Solo students shall land as soon as possible after time or fuel status is as indicated below (Refer to Paragraph 6-18 in the th Aviation SOP for precautionary landing procedures): (1) Total elapsed time from takeoff at the parking pad is 2+30 hours. (2) Fuel indicated is less than 100 pounds. (3) Activation of the low fuel warning system. (20 MIN FUEL light on segment panel).
7 f. Solo Lost Procedures: A student pilot is considered lost any time orientation cannot be established along the intended route of flight. Student pilots shall execute the following procedures when unable to reorient within 1 hour and 15 minutes after engine start or fuel is less than 200 pounds. (1) Climb to 1000 MSL and attempt to re-orient. (2) Remain VFR at all times. (3) Notify chase aircraft and HUB of the situation and state intentions. (4) If unable to re-orient, tune to radio navigation aids and attempt to reorient. (5) If unable to re-orient, contact Cairns Approach Control to either fix the position or vector the aircraft to a known position. (6) If all attempts to re-orient fail, the aircraft shall be landed as soon as possible and follow the procedures in Paragraph 6-18 in the th Aviation SOP. (7) After any unscheduled landing has been completed, telephone Mishap/Crash Control (800) and request the following be relayed to the 1-212th Aviation Regiment Shell AHP Flight Operations at (334) / 4157 / 4147 / 4073 (FAX): aircraft serial number, location, and fuel status. g. Solo Chase Procedures: Every solo flight shall have a primary, and if possible, a backup chase aircraft assigned. Each chase aircraft will be responsible for a maximum of 3 solo flights at a time. (1) Chase shall consist of 2 qualified Instructor Pilots. (2) Chase aircraft is not required to directly follow the solo flights but shall know and possess a record of each solo flight route. (3) Chase aircraft shall be at an altitude that enables communications with all assigned solo flights in order to provide assistance as necessary. (4) In the event that a Solo aircraft has an emergency or its EDM GPS function fails in flight, they will become the priority of the chase aircraft. (5) Chase IPs shall be utilized as the primary supervisors for refuel operations at Troy. (6) In the event that the chase aircraft PL s or becomes unavailable, the solo students at Troy shall be assisted by any OH-58A/C IP available for the refuel procedures. These solo students shall depart Troy and return to Shell AHP following the planned route and not attempt approaches at any RT.
