4 The Tradi onal Route Vs The A esta on Route Tradi onal Route- Tradi onally all of the required knowledge has been passed on by the airlines themselves in one big intensive course las ng typically 3-5 weeks. The subject areas are loosely the same for all airlines. But the running order, structure, and content of the ini al training course has varied from one airline to another. Each airline has gained approval for it's own par cular way of doing things in the cabin, and its own par cular way of training new crew. As a part of that training process, the trained crew must a ain an 'A esta on' to say they understand the generic part of the training - i.e. the aspects of their course which would apply to all airlines and all aircra types. Tradi onally in the UK this has been included in the airline training. The A esta on Route - A New Opportunity In mainland Europe the process is more modular. The modern way is for crew to gain the 'A esta on' course themselves and then approach the airlines already part qualified. The airlines then top up that training with their own company specific procedures and then the aircra type you are allocated to. Increasingly UK airlines are re-structuring to enable them to recruit new crew who are similarly already part qualified. It makes their training process shorter, saving them money and ge ng you flying quicker. This allows you to have a head start over the other applicants, if you a end an airline recruitment day or an interview, already in possession of this real qualifica on. It demonstrates your commitment to your career, proves you can pass CAA regulated tests, and makes you a much more employable candidate. 6 INDUSTRY ENTRY STANDARDS Generally a degree or postgraduate qualifica on is not required for entry into work as a cabin crew member. Instead, most airlines require a good secondary educa on with proficiency in English and Maths. Being in Possession of the A esta on of Ini al Cabin Training will be an advantage. Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age to apply to an airline and must be medically fit and have a clean record. Studying a degree, HND or founda on degree in one of the following subjects may also be useful in showing the airline that you have an interest in this area: 1: Hospitality Management 2: Leisure and Tourism Management 3: Travel 4: Customer Service Being able to speak other languages may be par cularly useful and this could put you at an advantage against other candidates. The majority of airlines have a list of requirements for selec on of Cabin Crew and this includes candidates demonstra ng a genuine interest in pursuing a career in cabin Crew along with the following: 1: Minimum age of 18, in some cases 21 2: Good standard of health and fitness 3: Minimum height requirement of 5 1 inch up to maximum of 6 1 (this may differ depending on airlines) in the UK it is o en measured as reach rather than height 4: Good hearing and eyesight, although glasses and contact lenses are allowed 5: Valid passport 6: Clean record 7: Medical examina on (some airlines may not require this) 8: Ability to swim at least 25 metres unaided

7 Recruitment is at an all me high within this industry and airlines are constantly looking for crew members to join their team. This is a highly-compe ve profession with high earning poten al and candidates compete for jobs, including new entrants to those with a significant amount of relevant experience. Airlines recruit throughout the year and it is important to make applica ons to a number of airlines. A er building up your experience as a crew member, there will usually be an op on to either apply for promo on as an on board manager or there could be an invite from the airline for other senior posi ons depending on your track record, previous qualifica ons and abili es. Promo on for air cabin crew is based on experience and performance. Each airline provides its own structured training programme for new entrants and invests in the professional development of its crew members. It typically lasts between four to seven weeks (less if you already have the A esta on) and the primary focus of the training is passenger safety, including the aircra 's safety equipment and emergency procedures, security and first aid. Basic star ng salaries for air cabin crew vary depending on the country, airline and factors such as experience, grade, domes c or interna onal flights, long haul or short haul flights etc. Addi onal allowances and incen ves may be received on top of the basic salary. Air cabin crew with experience can expect high earning poten al. Some airlines will offer addi onal allowances on top of base pay for the number of languages spoken. Many airlines also offer overnight payments for nights spent away from home. The majority of airlines offer free flights to cabin crew on domes c flights and some offer free or heavily discounted interna onal flights. There is usually a policy for discounted travel for immediate family and spouses.
