Timely and precise aircraft surveillance from GPS position information o Air Traffic Control has more precise view of controlled airspace o Operators can follow the paths of aircraft and ground vehicles o With ADS-B In, pilots are aware of nearby traffic and can receive ATM services Requires both airborne and ground infrastructure upgrades o Airborne Systems ADS-B Out: GPS (Global Positioning System) Source and ADS-B Transmitter/Transponder ADS-B In: Multi Function Display and ADS-B Receiver o Ground Systems ADS-B Ground Stations ATC Automation Integration Flight Following Systems Supports ground-based relay of complementary surveillance data

4 ADS-B Technology: Link Options Mode-S 1090 ES (Extended Squitter) 1090 MHz (ICAO global standard) o Builds on existing Mode-S standards with additional information (the ES) o Required above 18,000 in the USA and at all flight levels internationally o Can be used in the USA below FL 180 UAT (Universal Access Transceiver) 978 MHz (USA only) o Cheaper installation than Mode S transponder for non-equipped aircraft o Reduces congestion on 1090 MHZ o Supports additional no-charge ADS-B In features (TIS, FIS, Graphical WX) o Currently operational only in the USA. and only below FL 180 VDL4 (VHF Data Link Mode 4) MHz o Initially embraced in the research community but not supported by the aircraft and aerospace industries o ICAO standards exist for VDL4; Eurocontrol performance analyses (2010) have documented needed improvements prior to authorizing operational use
